Switching Railroad Customers, Huge Cut Of Rail Cars At Huhtamaki, Short Line Railway Shunting Action

Ohio short line railway switching on Cincinnati Eastern Railroad CCET! A huge cut of storage railroad cars had to be switched out in order to work a customer, Omni Materials, behind Huhtamaki in Batavia, Ohio. Very unique locomotives are used on this Norfolk Southern branch line that is leased to CCET. I also show the train passing through the small town of Mount Orab, Ohio. This video is interesting because this is the most cars that I have ever seen on the Huhtamaki spur. I forgot the name of the customer where they pulled the covered hopper cars but it is Omni Materials. It is a relatively new customer. Just listen to the awesome sounding locomotives in this video! I also filmed them at Sardinia and crossing a trestle over an abandoned road but that will be a separate video due to the amount of footage. Part 2 will be posted tomorrow. Filmed July 7, 2020 AD.

Excellent video, solid coverage. Looking over the comments I see the fans love the switching action as much as I do. The amount of storage area the railroad has is amazing. People have commented that they can’t understand why NS tried to close down the Peavine branch, but from everything I’ve read, NS is not a well run company. A shame, because with some work and a little patience, this line can attract new customers. Right now it’s mainly a glorified parking lot. But videographers such as yourself are performing a vital service in keeping our attention fixed on an underrated, but important part of America.

There is good money in railcar storage. NS just wants to handle big customers with unit trains. They dont want the small single car load guys

I see it now... roadway leading to the rails, place for trucks to bring the scrap. Looks like the derelict building was a powerhouse. Did they also have propane or ammonia or something there? Some sort of pipes leading to the rails. Old Google street view shows smokestacks where the holes are.

Jawtooth! The unofficial videographer for the CCET. I noted the marred covered hoppers. Yesterday I watched a video from India. Folks were excited because this was the longest freight ever attempted. 1.7 kilometers. You figure it out. lol. Anyway, posters counted around 235 cars that were open hopper types. Not one was marred with graffiti in a nation of over one billion people. From the looks of them, these weren't new cars, either.

This reminds me of the miles-long storage siding along Interstate-5 near Tenino, Washington. It used to hold miles of flat cars from the (by-then dead) Southern Pacific. I actually sent an e-mail to the website that responded to my search for 'southern pacific' questioning if they knew about these large amounts of flat cars. The website (Union Pacific) responded that while they didn't know about the specific bunch that I was mentioning, they had absorbed the Southern Pacific rolling stock. Currently, that siding is used to store vast amounts of tank cars.

Apparently there are not enough railroad sidings in the area that CCET has to use spur lines that go into business’s for rail storage. Creates a lot of double work, such as use of man power, fuel and wages. I might be all wrong but this is just my observation.

So, what is the purpose of two locomotives on their trains when one will do, to me its a waste of fuel of the locomotive that is having to do all the work. They must have money to waste with all those storage cars they are handling. Also, any news on the MoDoc GE?

They sure don't have money to paint a locomotive, 5857 is one ghetto looking locomotive!

They need 2 so they can put one on each end to switch customers with switches that face the wrong way and sometimes they move long strings of cars. I see them split the engines when they run out to Cohen and put one on each end and return with a loco on both ends and not have to do a runaround move

Jaw Tooth - Great answer. When I worked for the old Rahway Valley, we rarely used our two switchers because there weren’t that many cases like that. You definitely know your onions. That’s a huge reason why I subscribe and why yours in the only railfan site to which I do subscribe. By the way, I’m glad your “friend” isn’t around. Either he’s on vacation or Animal Control has caught up with him. I noticed your remarks where you said the crew even waved. Obviously they don’t share his feelings and realize you are an asset to the CCET.

Interesting that both the locos were pointed into the storage yard (small hood forward). I understood that shunting locos normally pointed one each way so that whichever way you traveled, one loco was always pointed in the forward direction. In this case, pulling the four cars from the storage meant that they would be running backward to Afton yard... or am I mistaken?

Yes, exactly, they do that often. They dont have any way to turn them

How many semi trailer loads can a train car hold?
@JawTooth

Depends on the type of car but anywhere from 2 to 4 with 4 being the standard answer

You missed that unique tank car. How was the apparatus on the left side used?

Watching enough of these videos leaves me with a question about the engines. When they are backwards as these two were at the end. How do they know which way the track is running so they can make proper adjustments for curves and stuff?

I was looking at the satellite photo of Huhtamaki and the rail sidings on their property. Hmm 🤔 Do they use the buildings for anything now?
