I'm an independent voter so I don't have intentions to defend any side, but I've seen this incorrect statement...therefore I'm adding my 2 cents as a Legal immigrant/Naturalized US citizen. My entire family - close and extended is in the US and has followed this process, therefore I am extremely familiar with the requirements to emigrate legally and what services you qualify for. Non citizens can get services. People incorrectly use immigrant as the umbrella term for all. I'm an immigrant, however I was naturalized, I hold a US Passport and was able to attend school, including college the same way a natural born citizen would. Using my family as example, you can emigrate legally (which requires a process) My aunt had to wait 13 years, my sisters and I less than 1 year because our petition was coming from a parent. The wait time depends on the country (certain countries have more applications than others = longer wait times) and relationship of petitioner. Parents, kids and spouses have the shortest wait times. A legal immigrant can be a naturalized US citizen, Green card holder, or Visa holder and all of these will allow them to get services. There are also ways for undocumented people to get services, one way is if they submit the request on behalf of their children, since their US born children have a social security#. Just spreading knowledge and hoping that everyone gets along!

Sophie Van der Meer When countries' local population is already multi cultural like Switzerland, Belgium, etc. (who aren't even founded by immigrants) they shouldn't try to import multi culturalism from outside. But of course some immigration is always ok & good as long as they assimilate into the local culture wherever they settle in that particular country. Since Sweden is different they probably won't stop importing outside culture including those incompatible with Swedish culture through non assimilating immigrants. I see Swedestan as a possibility in the future.

You are aware that this is fake news? I'm from switzerland and this is just not true. We take up a lot of immigrants, they all receive wellfare, they integrate and become parts of our society. Those immigrants are the ones that make us rich. In the past it were the italian immigrant that paved our roads, later there were people from kosovo which manly do the construction jobs. We are rich because we welcome everyone and support them that they can create equal fortune over generations if they want to.

However, the naturalization law in Switzerland is archaic, has probably not changed in a century.and you do pay. Just think of all the Swiss born young people that do not have citizenship. And you do pay. Still, I think we accept as many refugees as the US, a country much larger than our little Schwiizli currently does, and I am very happy about that.

GC Durnin I genuinely fail to understand why people think America being a nation of immigrants and America being a nation of Americans are mutually exclusive. “American” is an adjective, a demonym, for someone with citizenship of the United States or someone from the United States. Every year we receive legal immigrants and they pass citizenship tests and become Americans. Obviously there are less immigrants than Americans by birth, and that’s OK. But we still are both, and I think the politicians leave the reality out.
