I lived in Switzerland for six years and I was amazed by everyone's commitment to the "social contract". You can be as free as you want, but only because everyone follows the rules for the benefit of society. There's almost no crime, littering, playing music after 10pm or tax evasion because it just doesn't cross your mind to try to break the rules! Now I live in the US, where the focus is on self and not society. Every child is taught to scream out loud, "I'm special! You can't tell me what to do because I'm exceptional! My parents, my teachers and every movie told me I'm special!"

The idea of a "social contract" would assuredly be lambasted as a vestige of white supremacy, here in the US. After all, I've heard simply showing up on time for work is one such vestige. The breach of the social contract, with respect to the second amendment, generally results in being shot or otherwise incapacitated and incarcerated. I'm told this also is a symptom of white supremacy.

I lived in Switzerland for almost 7 years and I've never heard any police sirens not even once (I actually lived in the city), never seen or even heard of a crime from friends or neighbors . Saw probably like 2-3 scuffles at bars (in my 7 years!) by drunks but that's about it - never anything serious.
@justaguy6100

It's REALLY important to note that you get your rifle after you complete your mandatory service, so you've been vetted by that service and discipline. The cowboys don't make it, the delusional and violent don't make it. The UNDISCIPLINED don't make it. So even if you want your grandfather's Sturmgewehr after he passes, if you washed out during that service, you're not getting it. Background checks go beyond just criminal checks, and since every able-bodied man must serve, then it's a pretty intense vetting. AND THEN, the Swiss figured out that, without those bullets, the weapon loses a lot of it's potential lethality, so they strictly regulate the ammunition since there are so many firearms in the country. Being Swiss of course, many DO enjoy keeping their proficiency up at the range. So you request the ammunition for that purpose, then account for it afterwards, keeping in mind that those who are allowed ammunition have been through the discipline of the military. Plus, somehow, those that serve in Switzerland don't become gun fetishists themselves, nor anti-government nutcases.

As a Swiss citizen who was trained in the army to properly use a gun and drink beer, I approve this message. The overwhelming majority of deaths by firearm here are suicide. Noone carries a gun but the ones who have to. Meaning almost exclusively cops. But you'll indeed see hundreds of guns, military full automatic assaut rifles too (the kind of ones you can't even get in the US ;) ), on happenings such as shown in this video, in train stations when soldiers are getting to their duty, during gun fairs, etc. It's very easy to get a license to own guns. And even easier to purchase one. But you're not allowed to carry it around. Basically, you may take it to the range, to get serviced or sold. You have to store and carry guns and ammo separated. Ammo for the military assault rifle is sold at the range only. And finally, you're only allowed to use guns in designated places such as public or private ranges. A few basic rules, that anyone who wants to own and use a gun should be able to respect. I wish you guys one day get this problem solved in the US. People believe gun control goes against their freedom, when in fact they're captive of lobbies that couldn't care less about their freedom or their life. They will actually be free when they will be able to shoot their guns as much as they want AND be confident their kids come back from school. Keep on informing them with this great show! Cheers from Switzerland.

@tevarinvagabond1192

The thing is, criminals don't follow rules....the US is much more massive in landmass and population than Switzerland, plus it is not a homogenous country. Switzerland is mostly all white with people that follow a single culture, it is widely acknowledged that homogenous cultures have less crime overall because there isn't as many tensions within due to people generally following the same customs and having similar beliefs. The US is a mix of literally the entire world's customs and cultures, thus there is a lot of clashing going on. Clashing creates discontent and misunderstandings, and those can cause hate...hate can lead to crime. Not to mention the fact that when the US was first a country, criminals from all over Europe fled there for a new start and to escape the law...still happens too, with Irish, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and Russian gangs all over the US having been embedded for quite a long time. Add the wilderness of the US in, it made things more dangerous overall, so you can't just expect people to not have weapons to protect themselves...
@runenorderhaug7646
@runenorderhaug7646 2 года назад
Except the problem with this arguement is that a lot of the countries that people in the US claim are homogenized actually have higher diversity rankings than many states in the US and in fact the US total. It is often much mroe based on sterotypes of that country rather than reality of that countries diversity because it isnt meant to be based on evidence. America is not the most hetrogenous country in the world and in fact many europeon countries have people coming from all over europe, asia, middle east, russia, and even different kinds of americans too. In fact switerland is both linguistically and racially more diverse than the united states based on the studies I could find by about 4% In additon, depending on the survey the reality is that many countries will not see ethnicity like many in the US do as well which means they may also report it as lower ethnicity because to them that other person is homogenous with them

So many comments here missed the part where "mandatory military training" is a requirement. They aren't just walking around with guns, that is a gun restriction measure and helps to curb the unhealthy gun relationship that ppl in the US have and failing that they still have to go through the regular requirements and waiting time to get one. It's very unlikely ppl in the US would want mandatory military service because they want guns without the responsibility of owning one.
@ivoverzone412
@ivoverzone412 2 года назад
Well the military service is actually not a requirement to own a gun - it is just where most men learn how to use them. They also have the opportunity to return home with their gun from the military service so as to practice, but you’re not required to complete the military service to own and use a gun.

@@samuelmorales2344 High crime neighborhoods of course don't have a high cost of living. But, due to gentrification, the nicer parts of town become more expensive to live in. Which means, you pay less if you live farther away (requiring reliable transportation and gas) or in a high crime neighborhood where no one wants to live unless they have no other choice. The low cost of living in high crime neighborhoods is due to lower demand to live there, but high cost of living elsewhere forces hard choices. Also, gun control isn't gun banning, and social welfare systems aren't a substitute for self-responsibilty, but provide support to people working to get out of poverty. More Americans need to embrace reality instead of the reality TV show dubbed "politics" and slowly trying to restrict gun ownership will only cause people to buy them faster. A point I heard on the radio was that if you say that someone with a slight mental disorder would be denied. Instead of getting help they will not say a thing because seeking help means they lose their rights. Failure in parenting, outright lies in public schools, indoctrination in college, and the 24 hour news... I mean propaganda cycle. The list goes on. Now to this videos credit a reform I can think of would be to have a required class given by either the NG or any military branch in order to purchase a firearm. And those instructors would be able to tell the difference between excitement and evil. Every weekend 2 months and after that a 6 month waiting period before a gun could be bought. That's something I could wrap my head around. Because quite Franky there is not that many patient murderers out there, these individuals are mad now... and if you make it an 8 month process they will use something else. GUNS are not the problem sick individuals are the problem.

Pleeaase… The Swiss responsible attitude towards weapons is based first and foremost on civic responsibility and solidarity. There are clear regulations about the acquisition, possession and use of weapons, and people follow them. The mental health aspect was gradually included as an extra precaution. When something happens, the Swiss immediately take measures to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Also, the Swiss political system is so structured as to ensure that no lobby, cartel or political party may acquire undue influence on our government. That definitely makes a big difference!

"Mental health" is an interesting term. I can't speak for the "mental health" of Swiss people. But, the mental health of many Americans is not conducive to gun ownership. OTOH, if one lives in a place where the government seems to always work against one's interests it is understandable how one's mental health may suffer. [EDIT] Another thing I would be nervous about: especially in a place with a control-freak government, I would be concerned that, if "mental health" was a criterion for gun ownershop (or ANY liberty, but gun ownership may be the most acute) the moment someone uses a gun in a way or for a purpose not condoned by the Government (or anything else not condoned by the Government or even the political party currently in power) that person is quite liable to be branded "mentally ill". I think the fundamental thing is that they all respect and trust everybody to be responsible because somehow that's how they were brought up? Certainly, the key to all this is something that's not necessarily shown in this video. That's in the upbringing and values of the people since they were young. The problem in other countries, including the US, is the mentality of "I take care of my own, I don't care about others". So down the line, because there is no sense of community, no one can trust anyone and no one feels safe.

Men have to go the military for a period of time, where they are trained in how to operate guns/firearms correctly and it is taught that great responsibility comes with it. I remember when my Dad had his gun in the basement and I was strictly forbidden to touch it and was taught to respect guns and always treat them as if it was loaded. Also storing ammunition in a different place than the gun is the law, so burglars cannot just grab your gun and ammo. We are indeed raised to be responsible and shooting is seen as a sport, even for young people. There was one mass shooting in 2001 but we learned from it and you have to have a gun license and they are not randomly sold in supermarkets, there are also various background checks and if you have a record of ever being sectioned under the mental health act, you will never be allowed to have a gun and rightly so. You also have to go to special "gun stores" if you want to purchase a firearm and you need to have a purpose for it, like hunting or sport and if you are engaging in the sport, you have to prove it. When you stop participating in the sport, you have to return your weapon. You are not allowed to just own one just because you want to.

@@StewyAdamRules the American lacking common sense and confidently arrogant. No one is forcing guns on people. If you don't want to own a gun after military service, then you can turn it in. Also not being part of the military service is the luxury here. This system is a meritocracy, you have to earn the right to own a gun. You earn that by undergoing strict training because a gun is not a joke, it is a serious machine that SHOULD NOT be handed to just anyone.

Welcome to Switzerland 👊🏾 I came to Switzerland from South-America 10 years ago, and I have never heard of gun violence. I went to the US a couple of times and a shooting took place 100 m away from me. Here you follow simple rules or you pay a fine, it’s not perfect, but it makes sense. There are people from everywhere, they all work hard, follow the rules, and are very polite.

@@ianhomerpura8937 they love military in concept because their movies romanticize it. Look at how their vets are suffering, impoverished, PTSD or homelessness. They go in because they think it's a fairy-tale and then they get hit hard with reality. look at their law enforcement, zero proper training. They're trained to shoot and ask questions later. So no I don't think mandatory service would be a walk in the park and they'd cry about their freedom to not do service and the constitution which is ironic because they claim to want to be armed to protect themselves and country but wouldn't want the proper training to do it. The OP's comment says it all "common gun sense laws that don't restrict ownership". He legitimately believes military training doesn't restrict who owns guns when it in fact ensures that only trained and sane persons own them.

One of the most understated points of this video was traceability of ownership. I love guns. As an American male, it's difficult to not be an idiot with them sometimes despite my preoccupation with safety. I find it infuriating there are MANY loopholes that prevent the traceability of ownership with firearms. I also fervently believe that those who have firearms stolen repeatedly should face consequences. While this sounds like victim blaming, the fact remains that people who steal guns are not law abusing gun owners and if you are unable to take proper precautions to prevent theft of firearms you are either too irresponsible to own them or complicit in providing firearms to criminals.

the part about having to store guns and ammo seperately or in the case of military rifles not even being allowed to store ammo at home is also quite important. Coupled with not being allowed to have your gun even loaded with ammo outside of a shooting range does make the whole thing very safe. After all, can't shoot up someone for disagreeing about the weight of a dog (that happened) if your gun isn't loaded.

@@blackm4niac I mean, we live in a country where people post pictures of loaded unsafe firearms pointed at their crotch to illustrate trigger discipline and celebrate the idiots who accidentally shoot themselves. I am just hopelessly frustrated that many responsible and legal gun owners make arguments against regulations that, in the end, would protect their rights. They fight any regulation at all fearing a total ban, then get upset when large changes happen. If knowledgeable firearms supporters drafted bills like the NFA then machine guns and suppressors would probably be easier to obtain and gun crime would be lower. Instead, they let people who don't understand the differences between a magazine, clip, round and bullet decide.
