@@scottm.rodellgrtc2969 Maybe some focused attention on body mechanics and particularly on movements where good body mechanics is more critical from the standpoint of avoiding injury. For example in the last daofa class there was a low, right to left slashing cut to the legs that involved also stepping back with the right foot. This movement, for me, absolutely had to be initiated and driven from the waist. However, a couple of times when I was moving while paying attention to you I initiated the movement from my shoulder and wished I hadn't.

Having a lot of fun crossing CSA with JSA using your principles. Gives me some edge on confidence against the advantage of two hands, which proves not to be all that easy to deflect at all. The person mentioning exploring the shield in comments here is right on que really.
Impressive, most impressive indeed! I like the three responses against the Duifang attack seen throughout this video. My personal favorite part was roughly around (1:45-1:50) where Fei’s weapon gets caught by a flat block and then your riposte to the shoulder. I also liked the part where you performed the intercepting cuts to the hand when Fei advanced against you. It’s a very good tactical move to save time and hit your target faster while cutting distance away from them. Loved the video, and I look forward to seeing more amazing content from this channel!
I always thought the spadroon had a similar look in blade profile to jian. What is the typical weigh of 18th century spadroon? I realize that it might have changed over time.
@@scottm.rodellgrtc2969 They vary a lot in blade shape and thickness. Double-edged or Backsword, broader or more narrow. But the average weight would be around 800 - 900 grams, I´d say.
Thank you so much. I'm curious why the Duifang's shoulder is such a dedicated target (I presume weapon hand shoulder)? Is this a reference point for training purposes or a combat application?
There are several reasons why the sword arm shoulder is a primary target. The first is that cutting toward that shoulder, rather than say the center, or opposite shoulder, inhibits counter-cuts from the duifang. The second important reason is that cutting the muscles in and around the shoulder joint can incapacitate the sword arm, effectively ending the duifang's ability to fight. And third, historically speaking, a thrust into the shoulder joint is potentially lethal if it cuts the major artery that runs through the joint.
Funny you should ask, we are working on Tengpai Daofa during the Saturday Daofa Webinars. I have outlined a video on a Piandao (slicing saber) that was the standard issue dao to accompany the shield during the early Qing. I expect we will shoot that sometime this summer (we've a list of videos waiting to be recorded). So stay tuned...

All the swords and weapons you see in the background are Chinese. The dao on the rack is a wooded Chinese type willow leaf dao. Vietnam, being a neighbor of China, has swords that are very similar in general design and also to some extend, decoration, to Chinese swords.
@@scottm.rodellgrtc2969 Thanks a lot for your answer. I guess you are right, although in my opinion I still find it is more of a Vietnamese "trường đao" than a willow-leaf dao. And by the way where did you buy that dao?
@@hoannhitrannguyen5566 It was gifted to me by Raven Sword, but it is too thin to be used for swordplay, it would break with first use. That's why it sits by the door as a symbol rather than see any use. If you are looking for a good training sword, I can recommend several makers.

Thanks for the thought. The Chinese term "Duifang" is not the same concept, intent as opponent. It can be literally translated as "opposite direction." The idea is that there isn't an opponent, there isn't an enemy, or partner. These all have connotations and emotions attached to them. There is simply an action from the the direction opposite one that you move with.
