This Swords of Northshire katana came to me with the typical chunky, shapeless tsuka and warped, oversized fuchi & kashira found on most production katana in this class. In addition, the existing samegawa panels were not inlaid but just glued on the surface, which can lead to the skin possibly shifting and sliding in the future.
With a lot of work and patience, I was able to repair, reshape and recontour the core and add new properly inlaid premium samegawa panels featuring a traditional "aged" polish.
I also installed a new set of better quality basket weave f&k, a new basic but better quality steel tsuba replaced the alloy one it came with and a new susudake mekugi was swapped for the stock "chopstick" one. I then wrapped the tsuka in imported, luxurious brown nubuck ito in katate-maki style.
The refurbished tsuka now feels great in hand and should be a pleasure to use for many years to come.

Any thoughts on the blades of some of these production swords? Debating buying one of these (jkoo or swords of northshire) and sending them off for better fittings or buying a nice bugei or something.

Blades from these sellers are hit & miss. I don't believe they forge them themselves but rather source them from different available blades sold by a Longquan forge. I've seen some nice ones once and a while but I've also seen some I wouldn't invest a dime into upgrading. you never know what you'll get until you receive it so it's a gamble, really. best bet if you want something from jkoo or hanbon or similar would be to get one second hand, so you can find out more about it before you commit. ps- while the blades can sometimes be worth the cost of these swords, the construction, fit & finish of the furniture is often the worst part about them. they are all pretty much mix & match assembly and it shows. for those just wanting an affordable semi-custom sword and aren't too concerned about the overall quality, these drop-down menu sellers are a viable option. not great for customizing after the fact but will cut stuff out of the box. if you're considering a katana from Swords of Northshire, take a look at Ryansword first since this is where they get most of their Japanese style swords anyway and you can avoid the markup, which has been known to be as high as 100%

Awesome, the blue sageo doesn't fit though, imo

thanks. I agree, it's just what came with the sword originally, which matched the ito. I'm sure the owner has changed it since.
