This Swords of Northshire katana came to me with the typical chunky, shapeless tsuka and warped, oversized fuchi & kashira found on most production katana in this class. In addition, the existing samegawa panels were not inlaid but just glued on the surface, which can lead to the skin possibly shifting and sliding in the future.
With a lot of work and patience, I was able to repair, reshape and recontour the core and add new properly inlaid premium samegawa panels featuring a traditional "aged" polish.
I also installed a new set of better quality basket weave f&k, a new basic but better quality steel tsuba replaced the alloy one it came with and a new susudake mekugi was swapped for the stock "chopstick" one. I then wrapped the tsuka in imported, luxurious brown nubuck ito in katate-maki style.
The refurbished tsuka now feels great in hand and should be a pleasure to use for many years to come.
