Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd) - Bob Dylan Blues

Song originally written by Syd as a teen during the height of Bob Dylan mania in Europe (pre-Pink Floyd).
During the recording of one of his solo albums (post-Pink Floyd), Syd was reminded of this track by producer David Gilmour & encouraged to record it. That tape stayed in Gilmours possession for 30+ years until released in 2001. In "Bob Dylan Blues", Syd not only composes a song poking fun at all of the Bob Dylan hype, but manages to do it in Bob Dylan's own talking blues style!
The music video is by director Jimmy Lee. It was made during his freshman year of college at Temple University in Philadelphia. This was his first attempt at editing a video on a computer.

Not sure what Dylan thought of the song but it's common knowledge that Syd was a big Bob Dylan fan.

Syd Barrett was a genius, his lyrics were sheer brilliance. It really bothers me when people say that they love Pink Floyd but they have no clue who Syd is, without him, there wouldn't have been a Pink Floyd

100%. Also, some people talk about Pink Floyd improving post Syd, but in my opinion they just don't get the Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd because it's a different entity altogether and them saying that they don't like it really only shows that it's not their thing. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is my favorite album released under the name Pink Floyd by far.

That's because they've drown in their own pretentiousness. They're drunk on their own narcissism that they're unaware of our unconcerned with their incomparable hypocrisy. They also like to virtue signal religious people, by throwing religious virtue at them when they encounter harshness. Jesus said to "turn the other cheek.. and love the neighbor." However, we weren't commanded to be pacifist pinwheel that are supposed to get constantly slapped in circles like spinning a pinwheel. The most bellicose among atheists have more religious zeal for their atheism than religious zealots. This cab be measured in the body counts they produced in the millions as seen be the Bolsheviks (particularly Stalin), Mao, and Hitler. Pure narcissism will always cloud or ignore it's follower: pure hypocrisy.

(cont.) She described him as a loving man who "simply couldn't understand" the continued interest in his distant Pink Floyd years and was too absorbed in his own thoughts to spare time for fans. While her account is naturally fond, one should remember that she has spent much of her working life as a nurse and therefore sees no stigma in mental illness. As children, she and Barrett shared a bedroom and she recalls him leaping from his sheets to conduct an imaginary orchestra.

(cont.) Barrett lived in the semi with his mother until her death in 1991 and then remained there alone. "So much of his life was boringly normal," said Rosemary. "He looked after himself and the house and garden. Between Jan '66, when the Floyd turned professional, & Jan '68, Barrett played 220 gigs around Britain - not to mention broadcasting & performances abroad - as well as writing, recording & co-producing 2 hit singles, most of the band's 1st album & part of the 2nd. While his enthusiastic ingestion of any drugs available might have triggered some disturbing behaviour, such stress might tip anyone into nervous collapse.

(cont.) and you could say he came up with his own type of conceptual art. He would photograph a particular flower and paint a large canvas from the photograph. Then he would make a photographic record of the picture before destroying the canvas. In a way, that was very typical of his approach to life. Once something was over, it was over. He felt no need to revisit it. "That's why he avoided contact with journalists and fans.

(cont.) To keep an eye on him, she would visit or phone every day and sometimes accompany him on expeditions into town. Earlier this year an old friend saw the pair in Robert Sayles, the Cambridge department store, and went up to renew their acquaintance. "Hello, Syd," he said. "Do you remember me?" "Yup," replied Barrett. But Rosemary cut in with "Roger is only interested in buying some ties today", and led her brother away. Now she admits she might have been over-protective.

Not really heh. Don't get me wrong. I love Syd and his music, but hes really not that good poet. His lyrics are rather straightforward without deep and original ideas. More of a "child on the drugs" type. :)

Syd's early Pink Floyd (with Wright as vocalist on some of his songs), Waters and Gilmour are pre-Thatcherite Pink Floyd, Waters is late 70s Pink Floyd, practically no-one's 80s Pink Floyd (Learning to Fly and On The Turning Away are good but Gilmour brought in other songwriters to help) and Gilmour and Wright are 90s Pink Floyd. Mason's the drummer.

I was walking home from this lake near my house smoking a joint, and I was like, (on iPod shuffle) "this song is great!" Syd was definitely in my humble opinion a very, very talented man. Has anyone else noticed the slight similarity in both the phrasing and the words "as a bird on the wing" and the Roger Waters "Pigs On the Wing"? Syd Barrett 1946 - 2006

Wow, was Syd ripping on Mr Zimmerman? This is a new revelation for me. I love both artists, but Syd's "Bike" is pure magic and the pitch, syntax, emphasis and rhythm challenges anyone trying to sing it. Syd manipulates those contorted verses beautifully, maybe he is actually giving an answer or statement to Bob Dylan

Actually playserious, this song was written by syd barrett in 1965, and by this time syd barrett was already a member of pink Floyd.(though it was never used by the early line up) his girlfriend jennys letters confirm this. he probably wrote this because of his earlier attendance of a Dylan u.k. gig,and as you say was reminded of this song by Gilmour and finally got around to recording it in feb 1970.

it was actually written in early 1965 by which time syd was already a member of pink Floyd but was one of many songs not used-syd eventually recorded it in February 1970 and dave Gilmour took the master away to listen to but failed to return it to E.M.I. consequently the song remained lost for three decades before being 'rediscovered' and released on 'wouldn't you miss me?/the best of syd barrett' compilation c.d.which was released in 2001...hope this is of use to you.
