From its founding in 1788 Sydney has grown to its current size in such an ad-hoc, speculator-driven fashion that it has no thoroughfare which can unequivocally claim recognition as its "main" street. I suppose George and Macquarie Streets, for different reasons, might share that status. I lived in Sydney from 1982 to 1987 and I have to say that my memory of George Street bears little resemblance to the ambling, pedestrian-friendly experience it provides today. Back then it was choked 24/7 with vehicular traffic, and people would scurry along the too-narrow footpaths, assailed by the noise and exhaust fumes belching from all the petrol and diesel engines. It's sure good to see that things have now changed so much for the better.
