Hydrofoil Fairlight making a rapid departure from Circular Quay Sydney on a Sunday morning in the early 80's. I was a deckhand on the Fairlight at the time which explains the access to the foredeck. Sistership "Long Reef" ex "Freccia di Mergellina" can be seen in the corner of No 2 jetty about to commence service. Before the days of video cameras and radar guns used by the maritime authority the 8 knot speed limit in Circular Quay was occasionally disregarded, particularly on the knock off trip.

Fairlight- the company which developed the first sampling synthesizer- named themselves after this vessel as they saw it as the pinnacle of tech in those days in Australia.

@JulioHooligan Glad you liked it, check out the other hydrofoil clips on my channel if you haven't already. Fairlight was 95' long, 36' wide over front foil, 3.5m draft hullborne. Powered by 2 Mercedes Maybach 820 Db diesel engines producing 1350 HP each at 1500 rpm. Maximum speed 36 knots, cruising speed 32 knots at 1350 rpm. On occasion operated in seas up to 6m high across the Heads although 3 to 4m was more the norm. Service was never cancelled due to waveheight but due to surge at Manly.

Thank you! I grew up on Fairlight Beach, and used to catch the ferry to school. Occasionally if I missed my 7.30 ferry, you guys would let me on the 7.40 hydrofoil! I remember the epic sound those Maybachs made, and the comfy fore or aft cabins. They really were special. Interesting you quote 32knot cruise; I remember trying to outrun them to Nth Head in my monster tinny; soon as the swell started though, I was a goner!

I flew hydrofoils for Condor in Guernsey for three years, it was fantastic.

We were very fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to work on these truly unique vessels

I remember riding in these as a kid looking down at the hydrofoil and being fascinated with the physics of what was going on!

Also, the wake these things would put out while building up to a plane, best skurfing half pipe ever, if you could keep up! Again, thanks heaps for posting. It's been 20 years since even seeing a picture of these things, after seeing them twenty times a day, every day, as a kid. These vids have really brought back a flood of fun memories ;-)

Thanks for your comment and my apologies for not replying much sooner. Yes, the short distance for a high speed, high power vessel is/was the killer. A bit like flying a 747 from Sydney to Newcastle. No sooner had you manouvered away from the berth and ;pushed the throttles down when you cleared the 8 knot zone in Circular Quay it was only 10 to 12 minutes of flying time before arriving at Manly. These vessels were designed for longer trips and worked very well in the Meditteranean.

Thanks for the vid. I lived in Manly as a little kid and was always memorised by the yellow glassed hydrofoil terminal. I could never understand why my Mum didn't take me on one - I guess they were expensive. I finally rode on one when older and was ironically a bit let down by just how quick the experience was.

I used to always ride these as a kid with dad , and i think it was 12-15 mins per trip.I can always remember sitting below deck in very comfy chairs and been propelled back into the seat on start up.It was unfortunate to see them sold off and maintenance was the big factor with this.But i was led to believe that the short trips to and from Manly was the key factor and they were better suited to longer distance , the shorter distance was the cause of the issues?

Sorry for delay in responding. Sydney Harbour is pretty dull without these magnificent craft. Go to the International Hydrofoil Society website to see more photos of all types of hysrofoils.

I lived in Vaucluse when I was a school boy and walked to Towns Rd which gave a great view of the harbour just so i could see the hydrofoils go by.....

The first digital sampling synthesizer Fairlight CMI got it's name from the ferry.

Up on the foils very early rounding the Opera House seapilot64. Nice footage. Good to reminisce on the harbour last night mate.

Glad you liked it big kahuna. They were magic to work on. You could get away with flying out of the quay first trip on a Sunday morning back then.

Did they ever use the Admiralty approved brass bell in fog or restricted viability?
@seapilot64
@seapilot64 Год назад
Not in my five years as deckhand. Vessels not fitted with radar either. Steered compass courses until we arrived at Circular Quay. If fog on start up at 0600 didn't leave until visibility improved

Thanks 4 putting that up. Do you remember how long, and how fast they were and what sort of motors they had?

Watching this is torture for me...I never got to ride the Sydney Hydrofoil you see. Have you seen "Hydrofoil - The Musical". It chronicles my pain.

Sorry for the extended delay in replying. It is torture for me too that Sydney and Australia is without hydrofoils. I have seen your "Musical" and think it is fantastic. Are you in Sydney? I am a captain on the Manly Ferry so you are welcome to do a trip or two on the bridge and we can reminisce about the good old days. You can contact me at garry_fry@optusnet.com.au
