I think that Sydney was trying to use her non-dominant leg to navigate the hurdles throughout most of this race, Her coach, Bob Kersee, has made her do this before in shorter hurdles races. Sets her up to be able to switch lead legs in her most competitive races using fewer steps between the hurdles. She did use her left leg on one of the hurdles and had to stutter step on others which makes sense given the task. Running this fast leading with her non-dominant leg is mind boggling!
@Keepdapocket
@Keepdapocket 19 дней назад
I’ve been trying to tell people this. I literally told them Kearse is training her in the flat 400 for this purpose. She really wants to break 50 in the hurdles FIRST, then go after that 400 flat record. I said this as soon as she switched to Kearse!!
@crosslink1493
@crosslink1493 19 дней назад
She only used her 'inside' leg as the lead over the 9th hurdle, and it looks like she might have slightly chopped a step on the backstraight. I can't remember which isher dominate leg, but she's got it down solid to use whatever leg feels more comfortable as she approaches a hurdle. Great race. looked like she got winded but not really straining at the finish.

I don't know which leg is her preferred lead leg, but I'm thinking it's her right leg. She has her blocks set so that the left foot is forward; 22 steps later her right leg leads. In this race she's mostly going over with a right leg lead, except for the ninth hurdle. She was practicing something in this race, not pressing too hard. Referring back to the 2021 Olympic final and the 2022 World Championships final she does a lot of alternating, which is unusual but not unique. Bol alternates. Antyukh (2012) alternated.

Bobby Kersee said in a post race interview that he had her use 15 steps instead of her normal 14 and wanted her to be in the 52s. Then later said in response to another question, "with all due respect, this was a practice run"..... lol She is certainly something else. I can't wait for the Olympics.

I just looked up the Jr College record in this event in 1973. I ran this same time but in yards. Which is longer than 400. Meters. I ran same time which means I passed 400meter at about 52. 5. Interesting thing is I ran it in a Tri meet LA City College against to other schools. At the 7th hurdle the hurdler next to my lane hit his hurdle that landed in my lane so I had to figure out how not to hit that hurdle, still go over mine and turns out I took 2nd to that guy and 1st against the 2nd school. I was so mad that I had to avoid someone else’s hurdle that I caught an unexpected surge in the straight away and our best hurdler didn’t believe I passed him up as well. I suffered from asthma during that time but didn’t know what I needed to help my breathing affliction so I decided no more running and pursued Bodybuilding. But I wish I knew that the medicine Albuterol spray clears lungs and I would have loved to run in the State finals. The runner who hit that hurdle in my meet , I believe won the State Jr College 440 yard hurdles in 50.9 seconds.

It's funny how "ho hum" a time like this has become. Just five years ago, this would have been a top 10 all time performance. Looking at her step pattern, she did not run a single 14 step hurdle, and had at least one where she ran 16. And still ran a world lead time. To me, it looked like she was NOT running at full effort, and was simply doing this one to make sure she qualified for the Olympic Trials. Kind of scary when you realize, this was the 35th fastest time ever run in this event.

Thank you. I've been reading the comments and some of these people are so delusional they have no idea how to analyze what they saw. This is literally the perfect analysis of this race

@@dave929 I think you are confusing when Sydney ran the 400mH last (August '22) versus when she last competed (July '23, flat 400m) ...

@@_MicZ_ Sounds good, but he made it sound like she didn’t compete (at all) since August ‘22.

Welcome back Sydney !!! First 400M Hurdles in a while. Noticed, 2nd to last hurdle, she went over with wrong leg, the left leg. Then, on last hurdle, had to short chop her steps. May have to adjust pacing, so she can maintain her speed at the end, All things are correctable, so definitely would improve race time.

All I have to say is put some RESPECT on it and RECOGNIZE, Ms. Sydney is a competitor and an elite athlete! Femke may be on fire, but to win the 400 meter hurdles, she has to come through Sydney!
