She looks so beautiful and classy here. And although filmed the year before her retirement from the stage, her voice was still in good shape with impressive coloratura and secure high notes.

brings tears to my eyes to watch this. She was the reason I loved Opera since I first saw her in 1961. No one better before or since. Truly the most beautiful voice in the world.

This was wonderful to hear..Joan looked beautiful even though some of the singing was a little labored. She did sing some wonderful accurate coloratura - and some excellent top notes - as always. This video is wonderful to have!

She looked really fabulous here. Her hair, makeup and gown were at all time highs for her. My favorite is the aria from The Merry Widow where she can let out her true outgoing, cheerful personality and she really shines. She was at her best up to around 60, but still she sang Sempre Libera wonderfully only lowered to D6, which is still great at 62. She was a wonder. I actually prefer her high notes around 60 to those around 30... they got bigger and had more steel. I think the best singing here was the slow parts leading up to An Non Giunge, the second aria. Here she sounded like she was still in her 40's instead of near the end of her career.

I prefer not to comment. It is still one of the greatest singers (in her repertoire) who, at the age of 62, got involved with arias and cabalettas that were not exactly simple. Great example of vocal technique and in some parts difficult to overcome. With conductor and orchestra at his service.

Astonishingly Dame Joan sings 'Ah non giunge' in original key. Still it is not so easy to listen to her struggling from squeezing out high notes and especially C''' staccati... Still, it is very rare and precious video. Many thanx to mahavishnu1001.

I played in this. I remember it well and no, not at her best , this was one of her retirement tours. We also did Carnegie Hall with her. A hugely humble and wonderful woman and at her best one of the very best. I did Traviata with her many years before this and she most certainly was La Stupenda. Loved her.

@@maestro15552 the Elizabethan Trust orchestra was the Australian Opera/Ballet orchestra,,,later changed names,,,even in 2020 the Orchestra name is still evolving. Lots of politics behind the scenes,,,,rarely did Bonynge get an invite from the ABC. We hear rumours but who’s to know why. One day a good book will be written.

I distinctly recall rushing home so as not to miss too much of the live broadcast of this concert on television. I think I missed the Traviata but arrived home in time for Sonnambula and the remaining selections. What impressed me then as now is the long recitative in the Sonnambula piece in addition to the arias. Perhaps not her best, as others have stated, but I heard Sutherland both in her prime and her later years, and I can vouch that even at this late date, when I heard her live in the theater, she was thrilling and the wide vibrato was not as noticeable as it appears on recording and on video. Moreover, she had physical and vocal stamina including in her later concerts and she never shied away from the most challenging arias.

There are still some great moments here, despite the late date of her career. The operetta pieces are lovely. The bel canto pieces, well, she would've been better to leave those out.

The end of the Sonnambula cabaletta @ 21:30 is really sub-par and it's the worst thing I've ever heard her sing. This is evidence that she should have retired by this date, at least from this repertoire, which Bonynge has said that she wanted to do well before 1990. This proves Joan right. When sopranos get that faded 'old lady' sound, it's time to stop. The look on her face immediately after the cabaletta projects a certain (to me) sad disappointment on her part. Bonynge should have listened. Of course otherwise Sutherland is a radiant piece of vocal heaven fallen to earth. Sutherland = divine
@ygorcoelhos
@ygorcoelhos 7 лет назад
She still sounds very good in "Ah non credea mirarti", with flowing and still mostly even tone and good legato. The cabaletta is way too high and agile for her at this late moment in her career. Even "Sempre libera", which is a little less "leggero", sounds much better. The fact she still sounds rock solid and musically excellent (wide vibrato in the middle notwithstanding) in arias with lower tessitura and less agile melodies suggest to me the voice was still in good shape, but was definitely too heavy and dark to be as convincing as it were in coloratura repertory.
@nathandavis3002
@nathandavis3002 6 лет назад
She was still capable of producing great music even at the end of her career. But she was no longer reliably great. I agree, this is the worst i have hear her sound. Knowing how self critical she was, i can feel her disappointment just looking at her.
