"I wanted drama - I got drama!"... "I really need to pee". Love your real world issues as you muddle through the aspects many potential buyers may not be aware of, but you are discovering and revealing for us. As a researching potential Model Y-LR buyer I greatly appreciate your humour and time spent. Thank you. Have to go now, I've got to pee.
Thank you for taking the time to comment and particularly taking the time when you needed to pee. 🤣 I'm keen to hear more about the long range model experiences in Australia. From my limited experience, I've actually found that my standard range is fine.
Subbed! Hope you make more long-form content like this one. Go on more roadtrips and vacations and let us experience Australia from your lens! Thank you!
It’s these types of videos Lee, that make me really appreciate the work you put in. And also the EV community in general. I’m only 10 minutes in, but I’ll definitely reply once I’ve smashed through. Snacks in hand for me haha
Mel to Syd to Mel in the MY RWD was so much better than expected. Hopefully in time there will be more chargers installed for all EV owners providing price competition and convenience. FYI ChargeFox gives 20% discount on all RACV insurance customers. Thanks for the video
Thanks, yes I think I corrected myself about the 20% at the end when I talked about overall price. Apologise for getting it wrong earlier in the video. So much going on, on these shoots hard to keep track sometimes. 😀
@@notacarguy_au So much to pack in to 1 video, and a long drive for 1 person also. I was lucky enough to share the ride, hence we offered to buy you lunch at Gundagai however you were too distracted (talking) lol
That’s very kind you, sorry I didn’t notice. My brain is a bit all over the place at the best of times. Even more so on these drives/shoots. I trust your drive was uneventful? 😀
Thanks Lee. As usual a warts and all coverage of real life experiences. Much appreciated. Superchargers for me all the way. I don't have the patience for all the fiddle faddle the others entail.
That's fair, it is a bit more faf not using the superchargers, though not a huge amount. But yes, much easier simply using the Tesla solution. Will be interesting to see once the superchargers open to non Tesla users how things shape out. I predict it won't be much different as non Tesla drivers will be used to their way of doing things and the superchargers are more expensive for them. So they may use them, but not as a primary option. Then again, that's just a theory, no idea how it will actually pan out.
@@fishingwiththomas Oh boy, the struggle is real. 🤣 I totally get you, it took quite some time to convince my wife. She was very sceptical, but within a few months she was ready to get rid of her ICE car and now she wants an EV for herself. So keep at it, you'll get there. ☺
Haha …. My 1st video I’ve watched of yours, so funny and natural, I love it. A bit of inspiration too as I’ve been thinking of starting my own RU-vid channel about climate solutions and associated general experiences
Thanks, you should totally start a channel. It's a bit of work and I would suggest trying to film 3-4 videos before you go live and then you have a few to feed out for a while. Otherwise the "pressure" you can put on yourself to try and get one out each week can get a bit much. Other bit of advice is to focus on making sure your audio is good. People will engage with so so footage as long as there is good audio. But even if you have the most beautiful footage ever shot, if the audio isn't good, people will turn off. Good luck. Look forward to seeing what you make. ☺️
Oh and it's a little downhill from. goulburn to Melb and vice versa ...I have better fuel economy going back to Melbourne too maybe the winds too affected range
@@notacarguy_au I'm a tall white guy 6 foot 4 with a beard, reading glasses, wearing a short sleeved blue shirt, like the Viking dude but bigger ha, hope you have a lovely day too ..JD
You should try talking Tesla with an Irish accent. Will try your approach of doing an American accent. Brilliant. Have only come across your channel today - Hello from Ia wet and windy Ireland. Love the videos.
I actually spoke to the person who's car it was and they were there because the NRAM charger is cheaper than the Tesla one and it just as fast, so makes sense to use that one if it's free. Though I think if a non Tesla car needs it, the polite thing to do would be to move over to the Tesla chargers.
Great vid Lee. Thanks for doing it. You make it interesting and I love your attitude. Can I ask a question please about autopilot on a highway? I’m sure all of us have been travelling down a highway in traffic then all of a sudden you have to brake hard to avoid a pile up. Do you think (or have experienced?) that autopilot would be as safe or safer than a human? I’m sure ultimately it will be safer but I’m wondering what it is like at the moment. Thanks for any reply.
Thank you for the kind words. In regards to your autopilot comment. It depends, I've never been using autopilot and been in a situation that it's had to drop anchor. I have had the dreaded "phantom breaking" a few times and it certainly slows quite dramatically then. And the fact that it can still do the phantom breaking, though it has been ages since it's done it, so things are getting better. But the fact that it can still happen, I think shows that as good as autopilot is, it's still got a bit of ways to go before it's as good we we want it to be.
@@notacarguy_au thanks Lee. I really would love to find out one day what type of timescale it does a full assessment on. I think it is approx 100 times per sec on hardware 3. Don’t quote me though. So the potential to be way better than human exists but like you I wouldn’t trust it just yet. In theory we humans are purely visually detecting that pile up of traffic ahead and realising the change in speed and then acting a third of a sec after deciding. To my mind it should be able to detect the change in speed over several hundredths of a sec then actuate brakes within a tenth of a sec or so. And never be distracted. So potentially much better than us but not trustworthy yet. Thanks for replying and I appreciate the effort you put into your vids. I’m one of your subscribers and do appreciate your channel. Thanks.
@@notacarguy_au, Yeah apparently so, I guess that's one of the problems with so much of the Tesla content coming from the U.S., I kinda just assumed it was the same here in Aus. maybe they'll offer it here at some point, it would definitely be a good we to trial the features before dropping $10k on it.
Hi Lee, I like both your videos and I think they're very helpful to people unfamiliar with electric cars. I just noticed that when you charge, you leave the charging percent to 100% and just wait for the right amount of charge. I'm wondering if you're aware that you can actually set it to say charge only up to 80% and leave it alone so that you can do other things?
@@monsantos3313 The app does tell you when the car is charged. Also if you have a location set in navigation so it's adding the charging to that, the car will also tell you when you've charged enough to continue to your next charge for the nav.
Lee, do you find the MY seats sweaty? I've heard others say yes on warm to hot days, but i guess it depends on how long you sit in the seat for. Also curious about the glass roof and how much heat radiates into the cabin (eg. Is your head in a warm air bubble but your body cool due to the aircon)? I've yet to rent a MY to find these things out before I buy.
I actually didn’t find that issue with the seats. I’d imagine that it could happen, but when it’s hot, I have the aircon going and it keeps me cool. As for the glass roof, I find that for the inch below it, it can be quite hot, but lower than that I don’t feel heat from it. Again, keep the aircon going and it’s fine.
Yes thank you for that. I think someone else also commented and mentioned that at the Auto organisations give the discount. I think they own Chargefox now so that makes sense.
Oh that would be telling. But I’m going to tell. 😉 I did it twice. Once with the main camera on me the close up of the charging port is from another time I shot it. The magic of filmmaking. 😀
Hey Lee, thanks for the great content, interesting to see such a road trip without the use of the Tesla superchargers. In the interests of viewers getting the correct information, i just want to bring up your remarks regarding the efficiency’s of city driving and highway driving. Regenerative braking is a wonderful thing it recoups the energy that is generally lost during braking with a “conventional” car, It is not however a reason why an EV is more efficient during city driving compared to highway driving. The most efficient drive you can possibly do in an EV is a one at a constant slow speed with absolutely no regen braking at all. The laws of Conservation of energy means that you can not regenerate more energy than you used to accelerate the car in the first place (assuming level terrain) and due to the losses associated with putting energy back in to the battery pack it is actually far better if you dont have to regen/slow down at all. If you were to use the same principles on the highway ie: speed up to 110kmh then regen down to 0kmh and then accelerate back up to 110kmh and so on, you would find that your efficiency over a certain distance would be way worse than driving that distance at a constant 110kmh. Exactly the same can be said for driving in the city, If it were possible to drive through a city without stopping you would find the efficiency far better than the usual stop/start. The one and only reason for EVs to have worse efficiency on the highway is due to the huge increase in aerodynamic drag when travelling at higher speed. There are many people who have this idea of gaining free energy when slowing down using regenerative braking but unfortunately it is a red herring to efficiency, stop/start traffic is a necessary evil it is in no way a benefit. The only time you kind of get free energy is when regen braking down a hill but this would only be true if the car didn’t have to drive up that hill in the first place. I hope this makes sense. Thanks again for your videos 😊
Thanks, I didn’t know that. I think it makes sense. Now I feel a bit silly for being wrong so confidently. 🤣 I may see if I can find someone to interview about this and do a video to correct myself and inform folks about it better. Thanks again for taking the time to tell me.
@@notacarguy_au Haha not at all Lee, your videos are always very down to earth and you explain things in a language that everyone can understand which is great. You were absolutely right that city driving offers better efficiency than highway driving, which is totally opposite to what everyone is used to with ICE vehicles, use and conservation of energy is a widely misunderstood subject. I would be more than happy to help out in future videos if you ever needed it. I was thinking of starting my own channel but videoing and editing is definitely not my forte 😂.
As a new Model Y owner I have to say I really enjoyed watching this video (including the first part on your trip to Sydney)! Yes it was long, but you made it worthwhile and quite entertaining to watch! Especially the parts where you needed to use the toilet - I unfortunately suffer the same problem and need to use a restroom frequently on road trips LOL. I'm planning a road trip from Brisbane north next month, and really looking forward to seeing what it's like using the Chargefox chargers. Currently there is only one Tesla Supercharger along this trip (Gympie) so I'll be forced to use the Chargefox 50kWh chargers. Thanks again for going to this huge effort in putting these videos together mate! I hope there are more people out there like you doing the same. Keep up the good work!!!!
Thank you John, that's very kind of you to take the time to leave a comment. I actually have a few more of these coming soon. I recently went to Wodonga and back in a day and also did a family drive to Adelaide and back. So look out for those videos hopefully coming in the next month or so. But be fair warned, they will be pretty long too. 😉
In ABRP you can select what charger type you want to use e.g Tesla SC/CCS, CCS or level 2 so you can select it to ignore non tesla chargers or vice versa when planning the route
Thanks, I'm not sure. I think it would depend a lot of things like weather and terrain. I'd say on the safe side that it's probably closer to 350km, but I haven't tried that specifically. hope that helps.
Thanks for a really informative video, Lee. Your "what if" scenarios are really important for those of us who are about to purchase our first Tesla.Keep up the good work!
It’s a real shame the 3rd party chargers are rubbish, Chargefox is also uninformative about issues with the chargers. They really have a lot to do to attract ICE users when the market is this unreliable. I’ve had my Model Y for 3 days and I want to drive MEL to ADL and it concerns me it’s so painful still in 2024 in Australia when compared to other countries that better support EV owners
What do you mean “uninformative”? So let me see if I understand correctly, you’ve had the car 3 days, you haven’t driven it far, but you’re saying it’s painful yet you haven’t really experienced much yet? Also., this video is from March 2023, over a year ago. 🤷🏻♂️
Longform videos are pretty dope. Keep up the good work. Look forward to your next road trip. You should probably do a trip on the spirit of Tassie and drive around Tassie!
Thanks for the kind comment. We had actually looked at doing that back during the Sept school holidays last year. But then we looked at the price of the ferry during school holidays and well, it was "impractical" to be polite. 😉 And it would have to be during school holidays as I would want to go for at least a week and I can't take a week away from the family for something that isn't paid work.🤷🏻
Really enjoyed the video! It was certainly of epic length but nevertheless relevant throughout. I am a very recent EV owner and listening to your commentary is most helpful. Many thanks!
I watched the lot, great plan b info for me. I just came back from my own model y 1800km trip. Plan A, B and C is good. Great tip for share from sbrp then apple maps then Tesla.
About 15 years ago some charitable health bodies tested how healthy our major highways are. Only the Hume Highway passed. All other major highways failed. Some failed really badly.
Ah, didn't realise the Tesla only shows supercharger locations and not other (non superchargers). Hence why you need to use Plugshare or ABRP. Somewhat fiddly.
That’s not entirely accurate. In one of the updates in the last year or so, the Nav now shows you not just the Tesla chargers. It shows you other chargers, but still not at many as PlugShare shows. Not sure where it’s getting that data from.
All good to have a Tesla and just move to the Supercharger, what if you where not in a Tesla???. You would have to wait. One of the reasons I got a Tesla, options for charging
I agree - having the port on the centre front as a standard would be far better - drive in is easier and faster to the restricted spot, reverse out into a less restricted area faster. But too late now…….
One of the biggest advantage of the EV is toilet breaks😊. Not an owner yet, but about to pull the trigger on most likely a Model 3. These videos of Melbourne-Sydney-Melbourne are just so educational for believers, but not yet owners. Funny how there was a lineup at the petrol pumps and you could just plug-in in Euroa. I do agree that the stop in Barnawartha is a little to far from the freeway. However, BP Glenrowan now has BP Pulse chargers right on the Hume.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I' so glad you found it informative, very much my intention we these. ☺️ We just drove to Adelaide and one of the biggest issues we had was that the car charged so fast we didn't have enough time to enjoy our stops. 🤣 Most stops were about 10 minutes or shorter. We are thinking on the way back we may deliberately stop at some slower chargers so that we can take our time a bit more at the stops.
I was playing around with ABRP today and found that if you have it set up as a Tesla, you can search for 3rd party chargers and add them as stops then enter the % you will charge to and keep adding. The only thing is that you need to know where they are and search for something like "Chargefox, Goulburn". I'm not sure if it was easier to put the car in ABRP as the ioniq or it was something that you didn't know about/wasn't in there at the time?
Hey Lee it’s Daniel here. Was nice to meet u and Nash at the show. I did enjoy your 2 ling road trips. Also another way to turn off lane keeping/autosteer but keeping cruise control, force/wiggle hard on the wheel without blinkers. Nice to know that tapping on sign posted speed limited set it speed limit. Thanks , Lee.
Thanks Lee for bringing these awesome vide, appreciated what you have done. I've finished both videos and know that there was no one sitting at the back, from driver and back seat pov do you feel car sickness during the trip? And you may tell us the experience coming from the suspension for long trip travel. Thanks
I've had no issues with car sickness. My wife had a little bit of it when we first got the car, but she got over that after a week or so. It's not the software suspension, but I don't mind it.
With my Tesla Model Y coming (hopefully) soon, your videos are by far the most entertaining and educating I have seen so far and I find my self really prepared for this new experience coming from a 12 year old Citroen C3 Picasso diesel.
A better method in ABRP would have been to select your car correctly as a Tesla however in the settings under chargers & networks > Type of chargers and then unselect Tesla CCS. That would have given you more accurate directions and avoided tesla chargers. Still loved the video however. keep it up.
I would also assume that the guy driving the model y at Gundagai was charging on the 50kw charger because its 45c per kw hour vs 60 for the 350kw chargers. And if you want to stay for 20 mins to eat you might as well save some coin.
That charger that was failed before the Atto moved was probably useable. The error it shows in your phone said the issue was intermittent and judging by what I could see on screen, you could have proceeded….
Yeah, I realised that as I was editing the video. 🤣 though someone else commented that apparently it’s been out of order for months so could go either way. 🤷🏻♂️
That's a fair point. In my defence, I am so focused on what is going on and making sure the microphone, camera etc is working (sometimes I forget to turn stuff on. 🤣) I do have a lot on my mind whilst recording these videos.
53:10 At Gundagai - I don’t think its an NRMA thing. All the motoring clubs nationwide get discounts on the 350 kW Chargefox chargers no matter which state you’re in (e.g. me as an RACT member would get a discount at Chargefox Euroa or Keith).
@@notacarguy_au They don’t make it obvious… I think the deal was that each motoring club got “prime position” with their logo in their home state… and then this was confused by the fact NRMA started to roll out their own chargers, which also had their logo, but totally different!
@@notacarguy_au … and just like the last video I’ve commented preemptively.. I’ve got to the end and found you mentioned the 20% at all stations then. I think I said the first time that the next time I wasn’t going to comment until I watched the whole thing… oops :)
How old is your Model 3? Could it be that my car is a bit newer? or Maybe since I haven't done a lot of long drives like this my BMS still needs to work itself out?
@@Sensei_Sifu_ I did look into that, I might get one at some point. But at the moment I find that I have so many things to be thinking about on these drives that I don't think I would have the mental bandwidth to look at or analyse the data. I am already finding it a challenge to find time for these videos around my actual job. 😉
Of course it depends on your situation and what your needs are. For me, I think the RWD is fine. I would like the dual motor model but the RWD is totally fine.
I ordered model S December 2020 in Australia, still waiting so ordered model Y RWD 3 weeks ago and then changed order to Y long range, May to June delivery then big decision when S finally arrives
