As a former resident of Cronulla, I have many memories of that station, although it was a lot more straightforward in my day. One memory was that, because of my work, I usually caught the last train from Central - 1.05am from memory. It arrived at Cronulla about 1.45, although sometimes the guard would roam through asking where we few passengers wanted to get off and it would only stop at those stations. Not sure if that was allowed under the rules! Another feature was that people would often fall asleep on that train, especially near the weekend, and only wake up at Cronulla to have a three-hour wait for the first train to the city. Many of them should have changed at Sutherland to go down the South Coast. Thanks for the visit, Phil.

thanks for sharing, i don't think that would have been legal! probably one of the shifts that guards dread the most, the last service and having to kick people off before the train goes back to the yard. although the folk on this line are probably more gentle than in other parts :)

Interesting. In the old days all trains departed from Platform 1. There was a moveable wire gate across the platform to prevent passengers moving from Platform 1 to Platform 2. The next train departing Cronulla would be moved from Platform 2 to Platform 1 for passengers to alight. Platform 2 was only ever used if a train was arriving at Cronulla while there was already a train standing at Platform 1.

Hi Phil. Another great video! My wife and I, based in Oatley, regularly go to Cronulla by train, mainly to visit the many great eateries. It's worth exploring the area (even if you can't swim). The RSL is only a 5 minute walk away - great views, food and drinks! Also, the Sea Level restaurant though a bit more expensive, is well worth the trip.

Used to be an exit at southern end of what is now platform 2 on busy beach days to save walking all the way up the other end. I grew up at Kirrawee so, it was a no brainer to go to Cronulla to go to the beach. 🔱🏳‍🌈

You should check out the ferry that goes between Cronulla and Bundeena! It's an interesting hourly service on a small ferry.

Thanks for this on a beautiful day, Phil. I need to visit Cronulla one of these days. My eldest brother lived here in his early married days. Long platform reminds me of Holland where most of their platforms are enormous. Hope to meet you on Sunday 5th May, at the Martin Place Metro station open day. Looking forward to meeting Paul Thomas for the first time, too.

It is definitely the byproduct of it’s time. It was part of the old tram line from Sutherland station to Cronulla and the mixture of single track and double tracks until the duplication in 2010. The way of the line before 2010 was a single track from Sutherland station to Gymea station, double track from Gymea station to Caringbah station and single track from Caringbah station to Cronulla station. I am happy to be proven wrong here but from memory I think platform 1 was ended near the entrance/exit area before the line upgrade. Before the upgrade it was painful to wait at Gymea station for the train to pass through to back to Sutherland station and beyond.

The Tangara in the yard is being prepped for service. Continuity occurs once driver and guard have finished their preps.

Interesting fact: Cronulla is the only beach in Sydney that is serviced by a train line. The beach is about a 5-minute walk from the station.

Hi Phil, thanks for another excellent video. As a child, I would take annual holiday trips with my parents to Cronulla during the summer and we would rent a holiday house for our three week stay. I remember heading from the station to the beach, we would pass a merry-go-round, which was later removed. If you ever decide to explore Cronulla, there is a great walking track with views of the sea starting at Main Beach heading south to Shelley Beach and finally to Oak Park, which includes another beach. Anyway, take care. Rob in Melbourne Australia.

Actually went down on the Cronulla branch about a month or so ago getting trains using the current signalling system before using ETCS signalling system which you may have noticed the signs that have a yellow arrow with a blue background. Planning to go back down there when the new signalling system comes online

I was going 5:08 fishing on the Saturday morning following and I couldn't believe the carnage from such a low speed incident. I was told the whole story years later from a bloke who was working at the station at the time of the incident, may he rest in peace.

The single platform is a relic from single track operation for the line in the past? Expanded later to increase capacity. Also it would be interesting to film in Bondi Junction, with trains coming and going every 3-5 minutes.

I am pretty sure that A: it is the longest station in Australia? B: The train would pull in on the one station ie 2 Red rattler sets? Can be corrected. But would travel to Cronulla all the time on my 10cent ticket from Cronulla to Cowan via city circle strathfield. Then out to Richmond and back to Hurstvile took 8hrs i think.
