The "spare tunnels" were actually built for Bradfield's intended Eastern and Western Suburbs Railways, which were supposed to junction with the City Circle lines at Saint James. Ironically, the present E.S.R. platforms at Town Hall were constructed for the W.S.R., and the Up and Down directions were reversed.
St James Tunnel housed the Volunteer Air Observers Corps Control plotting room from 4-5-42 to 20-10-44, after which the unit moved to what was later called the Air defence HQ bunker at Condel Park. 2VAOC kept track of all aircraft movements in the RAAF eastern area command. By the end of '44 the threat of attack by Japanese aircraft was practically eliminated & hence the unit was absorbed into 101 fighter Control Unit, & soon after disbanded. The Bunker at Bankstown was already a white elephant by the time it was occupied, & it too was abandoned in mid 1946. I doubt Macarthur had anything to do with this as he went to Melbourne after he escaped the Philippines in Feb 42, & then moved his HQ to Brisbane.

I went to St James station today to try and find the tunnels, and to my disappointment ... they don't exist anymore. Now, they've joined the in-use platforms by filling in what was the empty tracks with concrete. When you look at the ceiling of the St. James station, it shows 4 like-tube like tunnels, the outer two in use while the inner two covered (which was the entrance to the tunnels shown here in the video). It would be a shame not to show the public the complexity of the CityRail network.

Do those extra platforms at St James still exist as they appear in thew video? As I recall last time I went to St James there were two tunnels in the Center of the two platforms which had been blocked off. The toilets are now on one end of the platforms in the old tunnels.

maybe i would go down they if i had a army of 5000 men with flame throwers and mini guns and spot light with a yr long batery. on 2nd thought i would still not go down there.
All I know is that the best underground rave/dance party in the 90's was here and it was amazing ... of course on the serious side.. wtf is a fire destroying ? What is the information we should all know about .. it's all so odd ..

@xXxAndrEzhItOxXx4 The Tunnel is not based on true stry, but it's a good movie and i hoped that it would be real. I also saw that kind of place like in the movie: there were some guys in same place as like in the movie, and there is simular being.. i have been trying to find the video but so far without luck
