Great to see you've acclimatised to Usyd! It takes time for sure. You should do a video on what you do for fun in Sydney in your down time? Socials? Gym? Etc. What's the fun life like there at Usyd and living off campus? Give us the low down hehe :)
The contact hours definitely depend on your course - arts has the least while sciences have 25+ hours a week. Credits/loads also differ between unis. But Australian uni is definitely much more similar to European unis than the US as it's very different to school. However, if you want something more similar to the American (well more UK) experience you can go to a uni college (e.g. St Andrews, St Johns etc. in the nice old buildings on campus closer to Newtown), which is where you belong to college so you live there together with all the other people in your year, there are events e.g. college sports, formal dinners, themed parties held all the time & 3 meals a day plus the whole alumni thing. However, I don't think many international students go to college...(although you can sometimes live at them if you're on exchange in Sydney!)
I agree with you so much about the english levels... international students are big point of contention in Australia. As the govt subsidises uni for Australians & have decreased their funding over the last 20 years, unis are forced to rely on international student fees to make money, which leads to them letting in international students much more easily than Australians - much lower IB/other high school marks needed etc., and high English level requirements clearly not enforced. There is a lot of worry that this is gradually going to decrease the perceived quality of an Australian degree in the future as these people enter the workforce. Covid has definitely highlighted this issue and brought it more to the forefront of the media, but it has been a controversial issue for many years now...But I think it's also an issue in other countries that attract students for tertiary education.

Hey I live in Sydney and ultimately both cities are amazing and either of them will be a great choice. The one thing I would say is that Sydney has some amazing tourist spots that look amazing in photos .
@@olyntan1961 I think it's because everyone is going like 3 days week or 4 days a week, depending on how they chose their classes and their schedules on their own, and I feel like student societies are the best way to make friends at this uni :) r u planning to go there too?

@@rogsy so overall the admin at USYD really sucks if you run into problems they take forever to fix it and it’s stressful as. In terms of teaching quality tho I can’t fault it at all! Really enjoying the units, great teachers who are super passionate and all that jazz! It’s what you make of it tho especially online. Depends tutor to tutor but I find if you email them they’re very receptive to giving you additional support :) Just not as high quality service as I would have expected from a uni with such a good rep (which is actually so high scoring because of their research not their teaching quality!) Macquarie uni is also known to be fantastic for psych. It’s a bit further out but teaching is great, it’s more relaxed and better service. Feel free to ask me any specific questions you want!
@@krisiona5277 thank you SO much for that info. So I’ll be doing the Grad Dip in Psychology, do you know anyone who’s done that pathway? I’ll be doing that with the intention to do my Honours year after that. How’s the academic staff when it comes to supervising research, helping with networking and the practical aspect of psychology? Also, is there any lecturer that’s funny? That always means so much to me HAHA!
@@rogsy So unfortunately I’m not sure about psych supervisors specifically as my honours isn’t due to start until next year! I would assume overall it would be good since USYD is known for their research department - I will say though at a big uni you’ll always have to advocate for yourself - keep your affairs in order and you should be fine! In terms of networking, I haven’t joined any uni associations, but I try keep in touch with people I like in class, same with tutors who I’ve found particularly helpful. I’m also apart of a few groups/follow a few pages on LinkedIn but that’s not affiliated with the uni! I’ve had excellent experiences with the psych teaching staff - all very knowledgeable and eager to assist when asked! My advice is if you’re not connecting well with a tutor switch as soon as you can. A good tutor will make or break your performance. I’m always down to meet with other psych students, so if you ever wanna connect lmk I’ll send you my contact deets :)
why did u choose sydney over any other cities in aus? i am trying to choose in between uofmel and uofsyd and im having a hard time cuz i have not been to aus at all :( im planning to start my school year next February btw!
Im from Aus (Perth originally) but moved to Sydney this year! If you have any questions about the city i can answer them 😁 my boyfriend lives in melbourne at the moment and I’ve been there once a couple of years ago so I can also try my best to answer the questions!
