This is the story of the secret deal between the British and French, concluded in May 1916, which aimed to carve up the Middle East in ways that most benefited the two European powers.
Modern world history has been heavily influenced by events in the Middle East, whose strategic importance has been magnified by both a global dependence on oil and the Israel-Palestine conflict.
A hundred years ago, World War I saw Britain, France and Russia locked in combat with Germany, Austro-Hungary and the Ottomans. As the war in Europe fought itself almost to a standstill, Britain cast a strategic eye towards key areas of the Ottoman Empire. Should the allies be victorious, it would be important to claim the most strategically valuable territory - Greater Syria and Mesopotamia - particularly in relation to the French.
The prime minister, Herbert Asquith, turned to a young British politician, Sir Mark Sykes, who'd become chief government adviser on the "Near East". In late 1915 and early 1916, he and the French lawyer-turned-diplomat, Francois Georges-Picot, would negotiate the terms of a secret agreement with potentially far-reaching consequences.
But this is also a story of intrigue and double-dealing.
At the same time as the British were negotiating with the French, they also made promises to two other separate interest groups - and these three deals all seemed to contradict one another. They promised to support the Arab Hashemite leader, Sherif Hussein of Mecca, in his effort to create a united Greater Arabia; and also the international Jewish lobby in its goal of establishing a homeland in Palestine.
Sykes-Picot's borders were never actually put in place but the agreement did form the basis of future negotiations. As well as proposing areas of direct British and French rule, it also mapped out other areas of "protection" and, ultimately, the post-Ottoman Middle East closely resembled the "spheres of influence" that it created. Within five years of the deal, the Treaty of Sevres and the Cairo Conference would draw the national boundaries of modern-day states which have been plagued by wars and revolutions ever since.

Great doc. Love the historic perspective on such important matters that are still on the front pages 100 years later. It is unfortunate this information is not front and center when the Palestine/Israel or any Mid-East matter hits the news.

They're STILL trying to keep the lid back even after the secret of Sykes-Picot agreement was already revealed in 1917. The remaining actors involved still want the sykes -picot remains a mystery. After all, the agreement was conceived in secrecy. Bad for the perpetrators because in 1917 the bolshevik revolution took place and edged out the tsarist government who were part of the secret initiative to divide the middle east. The communist spilled the bean to the costernation of UK and France. UK was embarrased by the revelation. Its image drastically tarnished it forced one of its prime movers (Mcmahon) to resign.

All regions had their dark ages. Byzantine was to your east and it was much more advanced in everything when Europe was a gloomy cloud. Get of your high horse please. People in the Middle East were closer to it then you ever would be. They inherited it much better than the Venetian envy and the Crusaders, which pillaged and ransacked the city to a tee, before the Ottomans ever breached the walls. We even have Celtic heritage sprinkled in this region dating back 300 BC. To presume that Europe was the only beacon of civilization is just a selfish allusion of grandeur. The current tacitness for this intrigue and double cross(Sykes-Picot) is making everything worse in the perception of any person regardless of their heritage. Unless they suffer from cognitive dissonance. It is easy to disregard millions of people as backward thinking and insignificant after you exploited them and all their generations that came after. This dramatization (video) ain't bad. Production is above average. But beyond the presentation all the talking points are facts. These and more. Accountability is the golden trait here, not excusing everything on the basis of ''Middle East was dark all along..''
@emreus1
@emreus1 8 лет назад
Well the media we are talking under is based on the infamous intrigues which actually is nothing more than imperial ambitions. Yes the Middle East today is the fruit of western aspirations. Lacking acknowledgment about this crucial matter is saddening. The Middle East and Ottomans in general never left Trafalgar. They never ventured into the open seas. That was all there is to it. You can sugarcoat it however you like but in the end it boils down to that.

10:59 Since when is the most logical way of defeating an enemy to take on yet another? Selective truth from Al-Jazeera as is often the case. Germany and the Ottoman Empire were drawn to each other, yes, because of Russia’s threat to Turkey, but also because of the great value to Germany of transforming the Ottoman presence in the Middle East into a serious threat for Britain’s trade route with India. All this and more is clear from the first page of Cambon’s letter at 12:54, to which no attention is given!

Over Africa. 1885 Berlin Conference was a meeting between 14 european nations who would declare war on Africa and decide which nations would get what land, mainly for mineral resources hence countries like Ivory Coast (Cote d'ivoire), Nigeria, DRC etc. As the Germans got the short end of the stick, they declared war on Europe for the resources of Africa and subsequently went into France, Poland and the Rhineland as example for Coal, Timber and Farmland Respectively. Very insidious but was the main reason was for mineral resources and land control of Africa. Study the Berlin Conference more and you'll understand.

Actually, I would call this a pretty badly produced documentary. It would be nice if it STARTED with showing a map and explaining exactly what Sykes and Picot agreed upon. Instead, it is spending a lot of time doing...what...development? I can find out much faster what the agreement said and see it on a map if I turn this off now and look up a text site. So that is what I will do.
