I remember as a kid, my friend's parents bought one of these Sylvania sets and being amazed at the color quality of the picture. They were good sets in their time.
I laughed so hard during this video between the noises he commented on, the OSB termite issue and the flammable cardboard preventing the candles from melting from the bottom up.
You and radiotvphononut are awesome! I enjoy watching your RU-vid videos even though I don't know anything about electronics or how all the different components work together to make a CRT TV work.
I have to say I enjoy your commentary having to do with your surroundings and it is great I really enjoy your videos in general and take a great deal from them and keep them all coming all the best
The hills are alive with the sound of migraines! I knew you were going to make a comment about a plane passing by. Seems to happen like clockwork in your videos. If it isn't planes, sirens, or dogs, then it's the damn police helicopter monitoring you and your sets from above. Cool and informative video as always. Thank you.
In the first TV, it looked like the horizontal output tube was replaced as the printing looked yellow. In the late 50's through the mid 70's Sylvania OEM tubes were green printed and for the most part, the replacement tubes were yellow print with some red print. Strangely, the red printed tubes came in a box where the tube number was printed red on the end flap of the box.
Desde Buenos aires, un saludo, disfruto y aprendo con sus videos y se me cae una lagrima por no tener por aqui la posibilidad de poder tocar esos tipos de aparatos de los 50, 60, 70. un abrazo
If you ever come across a Philco Ford 17mt80 set (possibly) I would like to see it. It was a roundie with black metal cabinet, and 4 wooden legs. We had one back in 1969-74. Had a horizontal oscillator problem. BTW, this is a great video!
About the noise, I can feel you pain .... ever tried to live in flat that is just two small rooms and the only light enter from a common shaft you share with another 23 flats, with dogs as well. On the second day I see you dropping one of these set into the shaft LOL
I notice you never seem to clean the old dust off. Is there a particular reason? Like does it potentially create a shorted path to just blow these things out with an air compressor? I'm new to this, but trying to learn. I picked up a 1950 Magnavox Playhouse that I want to restore, and I'm wondering the best way to clean up the chassis. Thanks.
I'd just use an air compressor to blow out the dust. Currently trying to fix one up and I ended up getting my air compressor at 60-ish psi, went to the tv (it was kind of far away), and blew it out. Don't get too close, the air is pretty strong at 60.
Shango imagine how much heat build up there would have been having 3 tube sets all in a single unventilated cabinet, realistically you wouldn't need central heating haha
I know that in the 1970's Sylvania was owned by GTE ( General Telephone ) which was based here in Michigan......crappy phone service but I believe Sylvania products were still highly rated ! Hope that helps some. D. in Mi. aka KC8YOX
Not correct..U R confusing the telephone division with consumer products and defense divisions,,,Sylvania TVs were made in Batavia ,New York and they were first to use "rare earth phosphors" which gave brighter reds in their sets... they also made quite a few CRTs for other mfrs...
how do I send a video to you my mum gave me a portable TV come from the early seventies and it still works almost brand new out of the box I'm just wondering how can I publish your video to send to you kevin thank you
It would be better if the film producers could actually have the TV's restored to be functional and actually used since movie editors are not great at making it look like something is actually being displayed on the CRT, and there is a way to film CRT's without the annoying flickering that happens on the video recording.
out where i live we used to have a ice cream truck the sound track sounded horrible. That ice cream truck music sounds alot better. When i used to live on the post base there was a ice cream truck that served soft serve ice cream for 10-15 cents a cone that was in the late 66-71. That truck would come around about 1:30pm to 3:20pm. My opinion the older ice cream trucks had bettter sound that the one i heard 1989 and that truck ice cream was high price 85% profit
i dont know about sylvania tv but for electrical gear like switch breaker i am a master electrician and i can tell you its hard to find worst shit then sylvania
Don't be so hard on Sylvania...a friend has a working GTE Sylvania console color set made in Batavia New York still working since 1968...They promoted their sets had more color saturation by using "rare earth phosphors" starting in 1965... they were a good company to work for back 30 years ago...Incidently, I live about 30 minutes from you and I have a vast historical resource background in early BW/Color tv and early radio... if you care to exchange contact information, let me know
Boy, and I thought that I was living on a mad, retarded street and country. I have alarms, dogs, Cuckoo birds, other very noisy birds that would wake you up early in the morning, power tools and all that crazy shit going on here, sometimes I was on the verge of going insane. Just cannot believe that people are so ignorant to the others welfare.... anyway..... Nice job on those TV's maybe you can share the movie or show with us when it will be done. Cheers :)
You know those visors the old time poker dealers wore? You could make 10 of those. LOL (I hate the term "LOL" but how else to I let you know I'm just joking?)
