Flip tool fro the win every time. Best recent addition to the SketchUp armoury. Thanks for the video Aaron.

The main advantage to me here is how easy it is to make edits later. Great tips with the flip and erase modifiers. Thanks Aaron!

Thanks Aaron. After 20 years of using Sketchup, each time I watch these videos I either learn something new or reminded of something. Using eraser tool to hide!

You're a clever bloke Aaron. I model scenery for XPlane flight sim, just done a hangar with 24 identical roof struts. Works well thanks. I did try Blender but it made my head explode so came back home to SU. Keep them coming.

@TheOnlyAaron does a great job of expounding the benefits of working more efficiently and wonders [9:40] "… if I had fancy legs …"

That is a great video. I often take too long to model my project and thinking about the models I make, I could apply this to most of my projects. I am going to go practice now.

Great tips, I love components and groups. What I don't like is moving them and trying to get them into position. Like moving a flashing into position onto a Gable edge. You can get it close but just not quite there. Sometimes it takes 5 or 6 moves to get it into position. Could you do a video on moving and placing components into tricky geometry, where there are lots of inference points like a roof structure or wall assembly. Keep up the great work Aaron

Set the AXIS so you get an accurate position...
@aarondietzen2995
@aarondietzen2995 8 месяцев назад
Generally, for something like this, I would model the whole thing in place. If it is created where it needs to be, there should be no need for moving at all, unless you are copying form in place in your model to another…

I agree with you but what about when I pull a component from my library or the warehouse. Then I find it hard sometimes to get it onto the model without 20 clicks and moving all over the place.
@richardhaas1989
@richardhaas1989 8 месяцев назад
I guess I was unclear. Set the Avis of the component so that it makes sense placing it later. Even if you get it from the warehouse you can change the Axis.of any component to where you actually need it. Like for doorhandles you can place the Axis away from the door handle itself where the corner of the door is if you know the spacing. So that you can place those candles by clicking on the corner of the door.

Thanks Richard for the advice. I understand now what you mean and gave it a whirl. Works much better than what I was doing, just stabbing away at the model hoping to land it on a ting intersection in a big model. Maybe Aaron could do a new video on this topic? Let us know Aaron. Thanks.

I have started to use groups and components to more easily make changes to a house design to see which design I like best. Can you make a video about that? Thanks!

I use components all the time in my woodworking designs. You definitely need to give some thought to components (sub-assemblies) at the beginning of your design.

Components are also a necessity when you need to divide a big model in many parts and even assign one piece of the main model to a collaborator so you can manage the whole process and at the end of the work you can go back to reload all the components saved exteriorly.

Just to be clear, we could have used the Flip(+copy) tool on any selected elements, be they a component, a group or just raw geometry - correct?
@SketchUp
@SketchUp 8 месяцев назад
That's right @stevehoge, you can use the Flip tool to copy any entities you like. However, Components are the only things that will reflect your changes among all copies of itself.

This is an excellent explanation that after using Sketchup extensively for the past year finally makes sense for increasing speed. THANKS YOU!! - QUESTION - is there a way to use similar methodology to build a wood framed 2 x 6 wall with studs, so you can add a bunch and size them all at the same time? Meantime your advice to just try it yourself is invaluable.

Aaron did a few live models showing how he goes about framing walls, floors and roofs. They are still avialble on our channel. Check them out!

My arc tool is not working the way it dose in this video. When I select arc too I get a protractor have to click once to set protract and a second time to set the start of the arc then move mouse to create arc. I cannot round corners. I have made sure I am in arc tool and not 2 or 3 point. I am using I pad and have tried with Apple Pencil and mouse. Also I cannot double and it put the same arc on the other corner. Not sure what I am doing wrong
@SketchUp
@SketchUp 9 месяцев назад
If you are getting the protractor, you are in the Arc too and not the 2-point Arc that Aaron is showing in this video.

Aaron uses a 3DConnexion SpaceMouse Enterprise. Like you, I was impressed with the fluid movements, so had to get one. That was about 3 years ago. The Enterprise is expensive, but I would never go back to not having one. There are cheaper models made by the same company though.
