GREATER MIAMI SYMPHONIC BAND is honored to present this performance of SYMPHONIC SUITE by the esteemed American composer, Clifton Williams, with Professor Emeritus Gary Green on the podium.
Clifton Williams (1923-1976) composed the 5-movement Symphonic Suite in 1957. It is dedicated to L. Bruce Jones, who was the band director at Louisiana State University at the time. The Suite uses one primary theme which is treated in a different style in each movement. The composition was awarded the Ostwald Award by the American Bandmasters Association, and is considered a repertoire standard in Wind Band literature.
This GMSB performance was recorded at Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, FL on November 10, 2019.
There is a poignant connection with Clifton Williams and GMSB. For many years Williams was the Chair of the Theory and Composition Department at University of Miami School of Music. Some members of GMSB earned their music degrees at UM, and a few actually studied with Williams. GMSB Principal Trumpet Alan Wolfe has fond recollections of lunches with "Jimmy" Williams during Alan's college years, and he first performed the Symphonic Suite under Williams' baton.
