Don't forget to change the grommet also with pcv valve, meaning the bushing of the pcv valve ( the grommet stays inside the valves cover) because they go bad also, and a bad grommet will cause vacuum leak. My CR-V has a bad grommet and change both the valve and grommet. Of course you need to check the hose too, if it hard, or cracked, you need to change it because the hose should be soft enough.
As far as the grommet goes you can use that 205 polymer stuff to it and it'll rejuvenate the grommet. Making it supple and returning it to its original shape. As to the valve? Replacement? I just clean them out with gumout till it rattles again. And having a oil catch can installed helps to keep most of the oil vapor returning to the intake manifold. Thus helping the air fuel mixture to be correct and helping to keep oil deposits from building up on the valves and in the piston chamber. Better fuel economy. Less maintenance, Less headaches.
...and most PCV valves are cheap ($5-10) and a fairly easy installation after the old one is removed. You can clean it with spray brake cleaner, but they are really cheap to buy! An adjustable jaw wrench makes it simple to remove and then get an 'end wrench' to match your PCV valve to make removal/replacement simpler.
Check the installed valve: Put a clean hose on the valve and suck in air. If the valve does not allow airflow it is bad. Replace it with a new one. If the valve does allow airflow, it is working in the vacuum direction. Next, blow air in. The valve is not good if it allows air in. The valve is good if it blocks airflow - for backfire protection. Check the new valve, if replacing, as described above. I purchased a new Fram PCV valve from Rock Auto and it was defective. It could have damaged my car if I didn't check it. Rock Auto and Fram lost my business.
Don’t blame rock auto blame fram they make the part also they are very good at refunding or sending replacements when it comes to fault parts often times they don’t even make you send anything back unless it’s a warranty thing
Shaking the PCV valve does not mean it's good or bad. It can still shake but be stuck open. This is an inaccurate way of fully diagnosing a bad PCV valve.
The only reason it causes a lean condition is because it is sucking air (and oil) into the intake through the pcv vacuum port. Anyways, if you route the pcv hose away from the intake and block off the vacuum port, it will get rid of that lean condition, and all the carbon buildup that causes low power issues that in fact DECREASE fuel economy.
I don’t have rough idle,smoke, stalling,have only Had 1 recorded misfire, I also don’t get any codes. However, I did notice that my Pcv valve leaked oil around the base of the valve itself. And noticed a crack on the base of the hose that connects to the Pcv.I have been struggling with my rpms hesitating (low rpm “bucking”) when I get on and off the throttle. Would this crack have caused my engine hesitation? It’s honestly hella annoying not being able to drive smoothly because I cannot ease into the throttle. Thx any input might help
Could be a bad pcv valve but it definitely sounds like you had a bad vacuum leak, definitely replace the bad hose and definitely check the pcv valve for any damage. Probably good to replace both though
2005 pt cruiser turbo. The pcv broke, the bottom valve and spring fell into top of head. No check engine light but lots of noticeable smoke from exhaust. Rattle test is not a way to check this pcv, the valve is held closed by a spring, it will not rattle. I found the broken pieces under the cam when I replaced the valve cover gasket
What would be the symptoms of a PVC valve stuck "closed". My engine idles rough, if I pull the vacuum hose off of the valve it is improved but that does cause the engine to rev at a higher rpm, so not sure if the at idle is really improved. My valve cost only 10 bucks and it's only been replaced once in 18 years. It is on an 05 PT Cruiser. I've pulled and cleaned the fuel valve and throttle body. Replaced MAP, MAF, and crank position sensors. The cam shaft position sensor was replace about 3 years ago along with plugs and wires.
yeah I think mine is stuck closed as I have to change my oil every 1750 miles due to all the water/condensation inside of it. No its not coolant I pressure tested system it held perfect pressure for 45 minutes then dropped half a psi over the next hour, its fine.
Other issues can cause those symptoms btw, not necessarily a PCV valve. BUT it's for sure worth replacing it since it's fairly inexpensive and a low labor process. I just replaced mine today in 10 minutes and only cost me $20. Good luck! 🙏
Mine too, I've been chasing the problem for months now. Bought new valve stem seals cause they have the same symptoms and head gasket cause i dont know if i have a cracked head or broken gasket but now going to try the pcv. Really hoping i can finally get my car back on the road 🤞
The best way to test a PCV valve is to remove it and put a balloon on the threaded end and blow through the other end. If the balloon inflates (and the balloon doesn't leak air ) then the PCV is fucked. Buy a new one. You can clean them with carby cleaner also if you're desperate 👍.
I had my PCV valve and hose changed last year on my chrysler. Probably 20,000 miles ago. I noticed today it looks wet around the valve and where the hose connects. Do they go bad prematurely? Past owner ran conventional oil most of its life, I'm running synthetic now. Is it possible the valve is clogged up from cleaning up the old oil? No engine light, just wet around the area.
It would help if you point a red arrow to the position of the PCV. Remember we are lay people so pointing to a general area in your engine is pointless . All we see are cables and connectors
EXCELLENT presentation!!!! My 2007 Dodge Magnum's engine maintenance light recently came on. The car has been running sluggish and having high RPM when it's initially started. This morning, blue smoke came out of the tailpipe during its startup with a heavy smell of gasoline. I feared the engine had a blown head gasket or valve problems. With your video presentation, my engine meets most of the criteria of a stuck PVC valve and I plan to replace the valve tomorrow. Thanks so much for the fantastic video and keep up the great work!!!
Although this commenter fell off a cliff, rest their soul… just in case anyone in a similar situation sees this, I doubt this helped. Strong gas smell plus the running lean symptoms is sounding a lot more like some fried rings which can produce pretty much identical symptoms to a bad pcv valve.
@@angelarohr7161 I had similar symptoms but the exhaust smelled of pungent fumes rather than like gas. And my intake to the manifold was glazed with a thick layer of oil. I felt like I was down about 50Hp too, I would nearly have to floor my poor little vw to get up a hill. Checked the PCV and it was in shambles... After swapping it, the car runs beautifully and idles like a dream.
My PCV value on my 2014 Ford Mustang didn't have anything inside it. Air could be blown throw both side like a pipe. What does this mean? Is that normal? If not, did that internal part fall into my engine?
Not all cars have pcv valves in the same place, or some even at all. Some places you might want to look; The valve covers The valley The side of the block You can have a couple different pipes without a pcv valve in them. A 2003 mazda tribute has those hoses in the valve covers and has an oil separator/pcv valve in the valley. Smoke test your intake to be sure
@@moemoe48210 engine was replaced January 9 2021, been running good ever since, around June, my check engine light came on with a low oil pressure code and p0305. I changed the oil pressure switch, the oil, number 5 coil, and both spark plugs. The low oil pressure light went off, the p0305 still there, truck vibrate up to 40 mph then smooths out, only the truck had no problem until I changed plugs and coil.
@@devildogg112985 Although it can potentially be a pcv valve it could also be a type of vacuum leak. Do you hear a hissing sound around the engine when it's on while parked? If not, another possible cause could be lifter damage on cylinder 5 and camshaft lobe damage. It's common for a 2012 1500 5.7L.
My idol was high on startup I just replaced my PCV valve tonight so I will see if that took care of the problem usually after the first start up the day it doesn't necessarily do it anymore so I'll find out in the morning
@@integratedwholehealthiniti318 it's completely normal for a lot of engines to hover around 2-1.5k RPM on a cold start. If it doesn't progressively decrease while it warms up, it might be running too rich/lean... 🙏
even if your pcv valve rattles it can still be clogged and getting stuck when actually in use /: if you see most other symptoms and it's clear over 50,000 miles on said valve , even if it rattles, replace it. trust me.. ive blown seals and gaskets due to this misconception, twice... 🗿and that gets costly.. so don't be lazy or cheap, just replace it ! 🖤
yes exactly I just ran into this, pcv was only partially "rattling" then cleaned it out with carb cleaner and suddenly got a lot louder!! dried and plugged back in then misfire gone!
I'm not a pro mechanic, but I think that rattle test is not enough. I noticed that my 2010 Subaru Impreza had some oily residue in the intake, cleaned old PCV, it did rattle OK. The when I was in the Subaru dealer decided to get a new one, why not. Compared them side by side: - they both rattle the same - when I blow into one direction, they both can be blown with the same resistance - when I blow into another direction, the new one completely block air flow, but the old one remains half way open. It restricts airflow, but why too much from been fully closed like the new one. So I put the new one on, will see if anything changes.
My 2006 Lexus was running perfectly except that exhaust fumes were entering the cabin! After a trip to Lexus. and two mechanic shops, the issue persisted. The car became unusable. I finally changed the PCV valve and the issue was completely cured. I will now change this valve every 4th or 5th oil change. $12 item on line from Lexus dealership.

2012 buick enclave pcv valve doesn't have internal guts. shake test doesn't work. had problems with oil getting into throttle body. buick said to drill out holes in pcv valve to the next size drill bit so oil can drain back into the engine. sad design
Great video! Mine is just consuming way too much fuel because air/fuel sensor sees too much air and lets in more fuel to compensate. (At least I hope this little guy the problem)
Put original from your car company. They’re cheap, so you don’t have to buy it again because after a short time they stop working. I learned from more expensive parts thought I would save some , it cost me double cuz the so called cheap part wasn’t returnable and at the end I had to pay for a new one from car company
Mine still rattles. I had took it off with my truck still running and it runs well, then when i put it back on it has a rough idle feels like it is clogged up. Ive cleaned it up but im replace its cheap. Im getting a code for VCT Solenoid i dont want to touch that yet because is a big $ im start off with this PCV hopefully it will fix the problem.
I have 2018 bmw 320i i have code p0300 and p0171 and multiple misfire …the car sometimes runs normal when i drive it for a while turn the car off and back on again it starts to rough idle . When its rough idling i rev the engine and get back to normal please help . I changed my spark plugs
I know my issue is with a vacuum leak or the manifold due to all the symptoms and the sounds pointing to that however my car throws p0441 &p0450 even though I’ve changed the purge valve, hoses all sensors and the canister 😢 but I keep being told I’m wrong based on the codes but like you can only fix the symptoms for so long…
Smoke test your intake. And as far as those codes go it seems like either your pressure sensor is bad, you have a clogged charcoal canister, or you have a bad gas cap. Potential causes? Overfilling the tank when you fill up. That "click" when the pump shuts off helps protect the charcoal canister so try not to "top it off". Or smoke test the evap system and see if there's leaks there.
Got the p0171 and p0174 (E350) and my engine drinks oil like it's no tomorrow! I don't have rough idles, but when kicking down a little on the pedal while driving there's a cloud of exhaust coming out. I will begin with changing the PCV valve and the belonging parts

I've been Googleing pcv valves all day. from what I've researched it could cause your valve cover gaskets to leak oil around the engine because if the air isn't escaping out through the pcv valve then it will find a way which would be through the gaskets the valve cover sits on top of

Stuck open, no unless there's backfiring happening. Stuck closed yes. Rattling it also doesn't check condition much. Check operation by blowing through it. It should only go one way. "Out"

@@4YouWHOyou Yes he does. It's called the "Africa" plate on top of the valve cover. It's really expensive to replace, and takes about 15 minutes max. I replaced mine on my 2016 and noticed no more frothy milky substance on my oil dipstick, less oil sweating, and less oil dripping out of the engine.
you ever figure it out? I got a 04 corolla with lots of oil getting into my intake manifold. I removed the pcv valve and it rattles. I hears rattle doesn't always mean working properly.

I have a 2007 Ford Taurus with a p0302 cylinder 2 misfire I replace spark plugs wires coils took it to my mechanic couldn't figure out what was wrong with it but it was a head gasket but showing no signs could somebody point me in the right direction help me figure this out not sure what else to do
Here's something to try. Swap the fuel injector, coil, and plug, with a neighboring one. Check Compression between them while you're there. No change? It didn't move to the other cylinder? AND the compression is good? It could be the computer or gasket. If the compression is bad, put a few drops of oil into the cylinder and check again. This checks if it's the rings or the upper end. If it changes you need new rings, if it doesn't it's either the valves or the gasket. If you want to tell for certain if it's a blown gasket, Does it lose oil or coolant? Does it have extreme pressure in the cooling system, or crankcase? Does it have coolant in the oil(milky) or oil in the coolant(frothy and milky)? It's your Compression good? Take a spark plug out and look in the cylinders with a bore scope to see if there's leaking anywhere. Simple things you can do to have an idea where to go.
I thought that was the purpose of the DI and egr parts. The actual purpose of the pcv system is to pull the crankcase into vacuum so that the seals last longer and the cylinders aren't fighting as much air pressure inside the motor when they go down, therefore using less fuel to operate.

@@Pro1er Almost none of that is true. The pcv needs a source of vacuum. Never piped to the air filter. It's an oil separator, almost never filtered. The last thing is correct. It's no wonder you think the pcv system causes gunk. It "can", but it does because there's no fuel to wash it off, and again the egr is what mainly causes the soot.

@@easyautofix 172k and just replace the radiator support cuz someone backed into me no air bag deployment and sat a year before I fixed it now she runs drives no leaks just that rough asf idle and misfiring cylinder 456 3 and one has a open circuit shop said I need a valve cover gasket and coil packs no mix in oil and no smoke just smells like gas when I start wonder if it's my O2 sensors or my intake manifold gaskets I did sea foam and idk if it works
Can this cause hard shift 1-2 ? Silverado 2015 5.3? It sometimes does the hard shift, when I push the pedal all at once my truck feel like it hits something first then fit accelerates ?
I have the blue smoke and at time when I step on the gas I shoot out oil? Could it be the pcv valve? No check engine light and it’s a bit rough when idling but runs greats I go through a quart of oil every three days.
@@miguelmarquez4369 most definitely, if the transmission and frame are otherwise okay. I’m going to put a new engine in my Infiniti once this one fails, the transmission is in great condition still and the body is perfect. It will cost me so much less to just put a new engine in as it will only cost be about $4,000 a new Infiniti would be much more expensive.
