Thank you, it is a great resource. I wanted to sync a local folder to a shared folder on Google Drive and use the local fodler as a vault in Obisidian. This is exactly what I needed: it's free, you can pull the remote vault and you can push your updates, then everything is visible on other devices synced to the GD as well. A note: it might go without saying, but I was rather puzzled for the first time. If you want to use this to have a local, persisted copy of your GD folder, you only want to create the download and upload tasks. You definitely don't want to mount the remote folder to your local one. Otherwise, your "local files" are going to be gone upon restart.
I discovered this channel a few days before, and I find the way information is present here very helpful but most importantly, well documented. It's great how complicated tasks are done easily and seemingly effortless. Thak you!
Never bothered working with rsync/rclone that much, but lately it's become more relevant when years of configuration and tinkering dispears due to computer failure, whish force me starting over from scratch. I'll shall consider setting this up.
Thanks for the video. Rclone browser really helped a lot more than the termial experience of rclone. It was easier to navigate and explained in a crystal clear way which made quite a difference.
Very solid introduction, considering all typical use cases and everyday tasks. I like the hands-on approach, makes me want to jump right into the action. Thanks for sharing!
Love the video. A simple and straightforward introduction to Rclone for new users. Also, it might be interesting to look at in a future video but there's a community spin of MX Linux called AVL-MXE geared towards video and audio recording.
Thanks! Yes I love AVL-MXE. I'm currently using it on a Surface Pro 3 to record the audio for this channel. I've also been using Ubuntu Studio and that's a great OS too.
@@StaempunkTV My first GNU/linux OS coming from the Mac world was Ubuntu Studio. Doesn't it come packed with amazing stuff!!! And better overall interface than stock ubuntu, and at about the same install size too, somehow magically. Mind boggling. I've since downsized and am always looking to start small and add what I need as I go.
I like your videos. I also use MX Linux KDE. Recently I have unsubscribed from DistroTube and Chris Titus Tech because they are gibberish talk. But you have useful and in-depth tutorials and videos. Good job sir 👍
Thanks Staempunk!! FYI...ID of root folder setting is now in advanced config. Once you paste in your URL snippet to that setting, you can keep hitting enter to zoom through the remaining crapload of default configs until it asks you to enter again which the default is no!
Awesome tutorial dude thanks! Only thin I would like to add is that when you remove the gnome-control-center it uninstalls the ubuntu-settings, but that is for ubuntu users of course.
Amazing video! You are excellent at giving simple yet thorough instructions. The setting "Sync: Delete during transfer" wories me a bit. Why not select Copy? Thank you!
Thanks for saying! I'll definitely look into your video idea and might create a video on it. I have a few more that I'm working on first but it's on the list of potential vids. Cheers!
I appreciate the effort of each step! I've used Linux for years but I'm not a power-user [yet!] and I wouldn't have considered checking for forks for newer versions, thank you! Also when your Key-bind combos come up, is that edited in post or is there a program that will announce when you use keyboard shortcuts?
@@StaempunkTV sorry that I'm replying so late. The posted key-binds are a big help since lots of us starting out into Linux are using the default key-binds. Thank you for the reply, I enjoy your teaching style, also I like your hair!
Tremendously awesome video. Top presentation, to the point, just great. Would love to see a version where this is all done in the command line, no gui, no rclone browser, and googledrive is mounted to a folder which is navigated to using some terminal file browser like mc, or nnn. ***************************************** PS. You would know better than I do, but I would personally avoid (what appears to me to be) somewhat unvetted github forks. Rclone browser as vetted and approved by debian community pulls straight through apt, and I was able to do everything you described in this video on whatever that stock version is.
Very informative and detailed video, but still down to the point without unnecessary blabla. Followed this tutorial step by step and it worked like a charm. One question that wasn't addressed: How can I automate the tasks? In an ideal world I wouldn't want to manually execute the Sync Download/Upload tasks in order to sync my offline folder. Can this be automated to run every X minutes when I'm connected to a wifi?
@w3sp Thanks for the comment! Yes you can automate tasks by creating a cron job for it. There are a few websites that explain how to do it. I plan to create a video about setting up auto syncs to Google Drive in the near future.
nice video, very detailed and useful. thank u. but i need to say this how all these big tech companies ignore linux and we linux users trying to solve very basic tasks with lots of efforts. why there can't be official google drive client for linux ?
This is an excellent video, thank you. Question: Can you automate the sync function versus creating jobs? It would be great if the files would sync automatically. Thoughts?
@luclevesquephd Thanks for your question. Yes you can configure Rclone to periodically sync by creating a cron job. I'm planning to make a video on how to in the future when I get the time. Cheers!
So you always have to press download or upload just to sync changes? How about for mount unless you unmount it does it automatically reflect changes from drive to pc and vice versa?
Thanks! Although I haven't used Rclone for Google photos, it looks like there is that functionality going by this thread: forum.rclone.org/t/google-photos-backup-making-folders-album/26717
I have two questions 1) I can't open the files as it says "the lock file could not be created for exclusive access by LibreOffice due to missing permission to create a lock file on that file location or lack of free disk space", why am I seeing this? 2) Am I supposed to manually download all the files I need to interact with? It seems tedious and counter-intuitive
RClone alone is working also fine with (in my case PCManFM-Qt). Fu....k the google-drive-ocamlfuse, i spend 4h with this trying to set up, with not succerss. RClone works as is should work. Thx !
I was too fast. I have problem with open files when i see in file explorer. This is normal ? Can upload and download task do automatically once user change a file ?
Unfortunately, my google account seems to forbid the use of 3rd party software -_- : when running "rclone mount ......" I get googleapi: Error 403: The domain administrators have disabled Drive apps., domainPolicy
@martantoine If it is your work account, your google account's administrator may have restricted the ability to utilise the Google Drive API by unchecking 'Allow users to install Google Drive apps' in the 'Data Access' menu.
Brother, are these files that are deleted after doing, for example, "download from drive" saved somewhere? I accidentally deleted some and I want to know if I can recover them
Great video! Is there anyway of combining the offline availability of the files via tasks with the automatic syncing of mount? It seems like it is one or the other: auto sync but lose access when you disconnect, or have offline access but need to manually sync.
@BG I haven't actually used Rclone on a linux server so you would probably be best to consult the Rclone website for help. I have read that some people use google-drive-ocamlfuse to mount their Google Drives onto their servers. eg. www.infiflex.com/how-to-mount-google-drive-as-a-disk-on-a-linux-server
To auto sync desktop files with Drive, you would be best to create a cron job. This video is more of an easy introduction to using Rclone and Rclone Browser with Google Drive. Thanks for the question!
@@AndreKochDre if u set up the upload task in rclone browser, in "jobs" tab, u have 2 icons, one for cancel the task and other to copy the command to the clipboard. so, copy the command and configure the crontab task with it
