A full 15 years after he first won the Gold Cup, AP McCoy was on Synchronised on this occasion and the nine-year-old powered up the hill amid wild celebrations to land racing's blue riband event at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival.
The Legendary Kauto Star, who was bidding to win his third Gold Cup at the age of 12, with his two successes coming in 2007 and 2009, was pulled-up at the ninth fence by jockey Ruby Walsh but was reported to be fine.
Synchronised is bred to win a Derby rather than a Gold Cup, and Sadler's Wells, his sire, is the first horse to have produced a winner of both races. In terms of his connections, his pedigree is all National Hunt, as he runs in the colours of JP McManus and is trained by Jonjo O'Neill, who won the 1986 Gold Cup on the legendary Dawn Run.
