We are using a pair of Delco-Remy 3-phase alternators to generate 60 Hz AC power for a miniature demonstration electrical power grid. In this video, we demonstrate how two generators may be synchronized with each other, then unsynchronized, then synchronized again.

This instructor is fantastic. Not a single unnecessary word. Not a single fuzzy concept.

I like it how you deliberately set the VSD's slightly apart to illustrate a "real" life condition of let's say two steam turbines turning the generators rather than a VSD controlled motor. Excellent video!!!

I always wondered how, if at all, the utility companies connect themselves to the grid and run in "parallel". This is an awesome scale-model demonstration that makes it clear! Thanks for posting this!

I would like to take a moment here by sharing my thoughts regarding your representation video, You Sir have earned all my respect for doing all this for free, I currently work as a testing engineer for MV panels and your method of sharing information for free is really admirable. for the time you have put in to wire up all these connections for the viewers betterment, I salute u and god bless you.

Our plan is to have all six generating stations constructed, operational, and linked together on our own miniature power grid by the end of August 2014. Each generator will have its own overcurrent protective relay and SCADA node for monitoring certain variables. Expect to see plenty more videos by summer's end!

Big reason UHVDC transmission interlinks are used I suppose. Great demonstration. Double trouble if a 180 degree shift were to happen..

I just found this, but I am very impressed with the demonstration, presentation and overall explanation. I've been trying to read up on parallel generation and this is the first practical approach I've seen that makes it truly understandable. What is the difference if this was 1 phase generators? Thank you for posting this.

Nice demenstrution sir. Is it possible to couple two generator together with single pulley system. In that way it wouldn't reflect the rpm to synchronize? Just a thought

I built a vibratory machine with two 3 phase motors that shakes media within a bowl. They don't stay in phase even with adjusting the frequencies. Can I apply this principal to my setup? If the eccentrics in the motors are opposing each other then I get destructive interference in the bowl and nothing moves until the motor phase up again briefly. Please help!!

that may damage the freq drives if you hook the outputs together. they don't put out clean sine waves. maybe 1 freq drive driving both motors .

Just curious how well this works when they are under significant load? I'm guessing the mechanical driving force must be very similar in order for this to work properly, otherwise they will each feel a very different portion of the load or try to fall out of sync?

You asked at a good time! In early 2018, the European power grid experienced a significant imbalance. From arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/04/european-grid-dispute-resolved-lost-6-minutes-returned-to-oven-clocks/ "[...] between mid-January 2018 and early March, a grid dispute between Serbia and Kosovo resulted in 113GWh of unmet demand from Kosovo. Since Kosovo is part of the Continental Europe Power System, the unmet demand on the 25-country system led to a system-wide decline in frequency to an average frequency of 49.996Hz. That meant that clocks were counting down minutes too slowly, and, over three months, connected clocks around the continent lost six minutes." To fix the problem, the authorities pushed the system at 50.01Hz for a month. Unfortunately, this broke the clocks for the people who had already "fixed" them. And the authorities in Belgium decreed that This Shall Never Happen Again. I fondly hope that some science papers are being written about this incident.

Hi! Great material here. Is it possible to setup load sharing using this set-up as well? Thanks!
@BTCInstrumentation
@BTCInstrumentation 10 лет назад
Yes, load-sharing is possible to demonstrate with these machines. Once we get all six generators connected to our miniature "power grid" in the lab and get the SCADA system set up to display individual generator loads this will be a goal of ours: load balancing between individual stations.

Amazing explanation, would like more videos!! In 2019 an operational error in Argentina got out of synchronization multiples power plants leaving more than 50M people without electricity in a matter of 30 seconds affecting almost all Argentina territory, 100% Uruguay's territory, part of Paraguay and part of Brazil. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Argentina,_Paraguay_and_Uruguay_blackout
