A promotional video that's fun to watch but only if you have the time. You might be interested in some of the other videos in my "Vanagon" playlist, although there is no pattern to that list. There is another one (somebody else put up) here: • VW Type II T3 Vanagon ...

It's unforgivable that Volkswagen not only discontinued the Syncro models, but also discontinued the rear-engined Transporter (Vanagon).

Syncro Passat B2 with 2.2L inline 5 cyl. and Syncro T3 with 2.1L EFi boxer 4 cyl. are dream cars.

I own a 1994 Audi S4. The ultimate quattro with the legendary 5 cylinder 20 valve turbo. Stock it produced 227 hp and 258 pds of torque. VW owns Audi.

Why didn't car manufacturers use limited slip differential, or positive traction differential for their rear-wheel driven cars and trucks? I would think that the posi traction would've helped with traction.

Because they are expensive and most american trucks or road cars were also cheap, for workers. Also no one would take a buick roadmaster, or what ever these cars are called, offroad. VW didn't discontinue the syncro as synchro isn't really one specific kind of system. They changed the name to 4motion and it's still shit. The rear engine Transporter was discontinued for the same reason as the Beetle. It takes away space in the back of the car.

They were optional in some cases, so if you didn't need/want it open diff is standard and saves some money. Especially on low performance models

This video is straight marketing propaganda Haha. The AMC Eagle they showed having "truck like" 4x4 is completely false. All Eagles used a viscous coupling center transfercase that allowed full -time operation on dry pavement all the time, exactly like a Syncro system, but was actually setup even better and MUCH stronger. It looked like a jeep system, but that's because they used the same housings to save cost. The switch on the dash simply disconnected the front axle for better fuel economy, just like some modern AWD systems do.

I’m English....... And hands down Germans are the best engineers in the world! I adore VAG cars and the brilliance that they come up with year after year. The only downside to Germany is Angela Merkel!🖕🏼 🇪🇺

The Quantum system makes sense, but the Syncro viscous coupling is illogical and not a true engineering solution to making a sensible 4wd vehicle. Think about it. When you're cruising in a straight line you're not using 4wd because all the wheels are turning at the same rotation, but if you start turning circles and the front and rear wheels start to revolve at different speeds, that's when front and rear lock up, exactly when you don't want it to. That is totally stupid. After spending over $NZ5k on a VW Austausch gearbox to replace my Syncro one which was completely shagged I fitted a decoupler so it could never happen again. Selectable engagement makes sense, free wheeling hubs for a Syncro would be good too if such a thing existed. My bitter experience is that viscous couplings are seriously flawed, they're a low-tech cheap way to go that the bean counters at VW probably promoted because it was less expensive and complex than fitting a Torsen centre differential. The Syncro is a great vehicle but the viscous coupling is its Achilles heel and that system gets a thumbs down from me.

Don't forget its more a propaganda video then a informative video... "Better handling!!!....versus 4 wheel drive" duuuuhhhhhhh but versus a rear wheel drive with a suitable differential?
