I started out a Marshall man with all the 80s hair bands but as my tastes expanded to jazz and classic blues I've grown very fond of the tweeds, bassmans and that bluesbreaker sound low gain sound. Would love to try one of both of those modules.
I had a Randall RM4 and the 50/50. Best amp set-up i ever owned. Hope to try the Axe FX soon. The Randall set-up weighted about 70 lbs :-( and had more tubes than I can remember. It also cost as much or more than the Axe FX as the cost of the modules adds up quick.
Same revelation for me after who knows how many years. Always played through beginner/poor guy gear that tried to be marshall at full blast at bedroom when I was younger. Didn't understand why fender clean is supposed to be so special, it's just clean. Who even cares about clean? At some point it just clicked what kind of sounds and especially the feel you can get out of them. It was probably around the time I realized you don't have to have all the gain, you can sometimes turn it down. Or break the clean sound and still sound good. All the good sounds require you to have an idea what you're doing with them.
Great great sounds man. About to find something that makes the guitar players happy...you know, that kind of happyness only lasts until we see a new gear...maybe that´s our happyness!!
Owned a 1970 Twin decades ago and it was much "stiffer" than the demos I've heard of the Synergy module. All four of the channels in these two modules sound much spongier and "woofy" than I recall. I played mostly back when Fender, Marshall, and Vox were 90% of the market and many of my peers were playing one of these three amps. My Fender "go-to" tone is Mike Bloomfield on the "Live Adventures" album and I've never heard anyone approximate that sound from one of these modules.
It's called RU-vid compression and gain settings. It's not hard to replicate these circuits and the Synergy models have literally the exact circuits from those amps. Just back of the sag control. Done.
Hey for a tone episode could you do a Hagar era Van Halen tone? I think it would be super cool to see you play some tasty licks with that fat tone Ed had in the late 80's early 90's.
Hi, Leon. I own a Synergy SYN-50 with Soldano, Bogner Ecstasy, Frayette Deliverance and OS modules.. I am looking to add a clean Fenderish style module. How do these cleans compare to the clean channels of the ICII, Friedman BE, and Vai ? By hearing this review and tryout (greatly done, by the way), the T-Dlx was the one I liked most. Would you recommend it to go along with the modules I already have? Best regards.
Clean on the Vai would probably be my pick. The IICP clean is great but shares eq with the dirty channel so they can be a little hard to balance - if you're only using one mode from it though definitely worth a look.
I think the idea behind the synergy stuff is really cool. My concern is that all the modules sound to me overly thin and compressed, especially the clean sounds. It sounds like the guitar plugged right into the interface.
Probably no surprise when TDLX is the fenders everybody assocciates with fender sounds since the beginning of the time, while the other is what became marshall.
Very cool demo. I'm confused though. Can you just buy the preamp rack unit and change out preamp modules, or does it come with a power amp and pretty amp and you just change the preamp modules? Are their power amp modules too? To me, the tone comes from the preamp. You get it to bark and then your power amp just adds volume. We had a foot of snow 3 days ago and it is sunny today and feels like spring as it's pretty warm. Amazingly beautiful day! Spring is just 18 days away or something. Do you get a delay when switching from one channel to another? Could you switch mid-song as you eluded to in the video with one channel acting as a boosted channel in place of a drive pedal? Thank you Leon, cheers from Texas.

I like it alot on the deluxe when its gain is up, "pushing the red" Its the squishy sound that is often searched for, now you dont need to overload a piece of vintage gear. Thats something that gives me appreciation for the engineering involved in the gear. Love it, Thanks Leon, such good work!
