#Synido sent me their #K25 #MIDIkeyboard for review. It's purple! I thought this was a good opportunity to talk about the Yamaha MU15, an XG expander from 1998, as well.

the 3.5mm midi is a great touch, and I wish it's a standard requirement on all relevant audio hardware

I'm pretty sure the MU15 is just the sound module version where as the QY70 has the same sound engine but is an arranger and work station.
@JayBmusic
@JayBmusic Месяц назад
They should sound pretty much identical. The first Yamaha XG generation spread across multiple devices with different number of sounds and features and probably differences in their DACs but they still have the same roots. The QY100 he mentioned in the video however is one generation younger and has a different waverom.

The MU15 steals the show Hey, Nice playing, the MU15 is unknown for me, I have to take a look at those 90s gems. They tempoKEY K25 is pretty cool, it looks translucent, but it isn't, right? hey, nice t-shirt, I remember Shadow of the Best 1, played it in the Atari Lynx, a long time ago.

The MU15 is the interesting thing here (for me at least). I have an MU10. It’s great fun to play with but benefits most from editing via software to access all those XG parameters as it has none of the controls or display of the MU15. XGPad is a great editor for anyone investigating the hidden power of the MUs - especially with its randomizer function but it won’t run on anything after Windows XP (I keep a couple of XP machines going just for these purposes). Another great feature of the MU10 is that it can load QS300 patches in user bank 63. Does the MU15 do likewise? Again, another reason to have at least one old 32bit Windows machine going as there are some old editors from the Win98 days, that run on XP. QSEdit being the best I’ve found. Would definitely enjoy a video exploring the MU15…
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
The XG standard is well-documented, and sounds should be interchangable (to a certain degree) on most XG devices. The MU15 doesn't have slots to store your patches in, though (at least as far as I know as of today) I'll make a deep-dive video on the XG standard, seems like an interesting topic to me. I could even imagine coding a web based editor (think soundmondo).
@wildchurch
@wildchurch Месяц назад
@@mr_floydst I just checked the MU15 manual and indeed it doesn't have the QS300 option. The MU10 is basically an XG50DB in a standlone box so has this additional capability. Anyways, the QS300 stuff is just a side dish. I'm a big XG fan. Once you get beyond the bread and butter sounds with an editor, XG devices can yield quite surprising results. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd appreciate a deep-dive video on it from you.... Cheers!

@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
Thanks! The QY100 is superior because of its audio input and sequencer. They share the same XG patches and effects, though.
@audiblevideo
@audiblevideo Месяц назад
How are you getting along with the RK-008 sequencer? Ive been looking at it for a bit while Ive been researching midi loopers
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
I've had it for some days only. It's super easy to use: enter track length, then press record and play. A "track" has 16 midi tracks, and the MIDI track you're recording on has to be specified on the MIDI keyboard you're playing on. This thing is not cheap, but it's a realtime sequencer, the only hardware sequencer in this price range I can think of.

I think I'll do a video on "XG secrets" later with all those CC and SysEx parameters one can use to shape sounds and performances. ;-) (Those are not secrets, of course, but the world needs to be reminded there was and is a reason why certain standards are good to have)

Mr Floyd, I have a problem with my EX5, the display digits are not steady and are flashing intermittently, what could it be? Which part should I replace? Thanks.
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
I'm afraid I can't diagnose this over the internet. If the numbers are "unstable" (moving between values quickly) I guess there's something wrong with the ADC circuitry reading the encoders. If the display itself is flashing, that's an easy fix, replace it with a new one. But I'd suggest to take it to a repair shop.
@digitaldesigner5284
@digitaldesigner5284 Месяц назад
@@mr_floydst The display itself is steady. Only on some menu screens do the digits become unstable. The problem where I live is finding a technician who really understands. The ADC ciucuitry that you mentioned is a good start. .

@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
The keys are slightly bigger. I've made a photo for you ;-) www.patreon.com/posts/some-random-106344113 The keys on the Reface are excellent, they don't move vertically at all. On this keyboard, the go left and right for 2mm or so (but never enough to rub against each other, as I said in the video)

By dropping the need for an external configuration software, and a lower price. If they manage to sort out the timing problems I showed in this video, this is not a bad controller. "if". ;-)

Funny that you just tested this combination now! I also recently bought a Yamaha mu 15 and wanted to pair it with my also new Garagekey pad from Miditech!😊 As much as I value otherwise compact devices, both devices have some weaknesses: Unfortunately, with the Miditech Garagekey pad you can only use the drum pads on channel 10, but I would also want to put them on channel 2 or 3 to play a string sound or something like that as accompaniment. Unfortunately that doesn't work with this keyboard! I'm guessing that's the case with this model in your video, right? Furthermore, it is a shame that the octave buttons on the Miditech keyboard are not directly accessible, but only in a menu. Unfortunately, if you change this you can no longer change the midi channel. Since the Yamaha mu 15 cannot save patches, my idea was at least 16 favorite sounds on channels one to 16 and then control them directly via the keyboard! Now this small keyboard only has two octaves so you will probably need the octave buttons often. What about this model that you tested? There are special octave buttons, but how do you change the Midi channel? I really like the size of both devices, unfortunately these small midi keyboards almost all don't have a battery compartment so you still need an additional USB power supply, which means an additional cable and power bank. Especially when traveling, it would be more practical if the manufacturers Battery compartments would be installed as the devices require little power! Before the MU 15, I also had the Yamaha Qy70, which I liked better in terms of sound. Are the sounds really different? I suspect so. However, the display and menu on the QY 70 were more confusing and since I didn't need the sequencer, I got rid of this device! The MU15 is much clearer, but unfortunately has no option at all, as already mentioned, to save favorite sounds that you would have already edited beforehand. I hope you can answer the two three questions for me: In short, you can set the drum pads on the keyboard to other channels, i.e. two or three, etc.? Can you easily change the MIDI channels from the keyboard? The keyboard seemed a bit spongy to me?! I assume that this device comes from the same manufacturer as Miditech and Midiplus?! 😉 It's also a shame that the knobs are on the right side again, I'm right-handed and would like to adjust the sounds with my left, but almost all keyboards have this problem except the Miditech Garagekey Pad mentioned! Thank you very much for the nice and informative video 👍
@mr_floydst
@mr_floydst Месяц назад
Hi, the pads can be assigned to any MIDI channel and any note you want them to play. It's all possible by pushing the main menu button while moving/using one of the other UI elements. The MU15 and QY70 are very similar sound-wise, if you have a QY70, you don't need a MU15. The keyboard definitely is its own brand, the keys are playable but they move left and right a bit (as seen in the video). It's no comparison to e.g. the Reface DX.
