Here is a question you probably never heard. First, I just purchased a Synology NAS, It is an entry level with just 2x18TB in Raid0. I back up everything to encrypted internal style drives in a HD Dock using VeraCrypt to mount the drives and use FreeFileSync to copy my data from my Direct Attached Storage. Example: Take a 6TB drive from Firesafe - insert it into HD dock. Mount the drive with Veracrypt. Sync a portion of the DAS to the encrypted drive. Dismount the volume and drive and move to the next drive in firesafe. This method works well and fast for me. and I leave time for myself to do this every Sunday morning. Now I have this new Synology NAS that I am using as a Movie Media Server for the whole house. Right Now I am backing up the NAS through the computer that has the HD Dock attached. With all that said. I think it would be very convenient to connect my HD Dock direct to the NAS and "Sync" directly . The trouble is I have no way of mounting an encrypted drive to the NAS. Is there a Synology version of Veracrypt? so I can mount a drive in a HD dock directly?

Hello, I’m a big fan of your videos and I appreciate the insights you provide. I’ve noticed a small detail which, if corrected, might enhance the viewing experience. The Apple logo on your Mac tends to collect fingerprints and other smudges, which can be somewhat distracting during your demonstrations. It would be wonderful if you could give it a quick clean before filming. This minor adjustment would definitely help to maintain the overall aesthetic of your videos. Thank you for your consistent quality content, keep up the good work!

Hey SpaceRex!! Excellent video. I am surprised that space expansion in an existing Volume was not a common question. So, here's my question - say I have an existing Volume in SHR 1 having 2 - 2TB drives. So if I want to expand this to 4TB, how do I plug in 2 - 4TB drives to expand the volume? Will really appreciate if you can take this question in your 'common questions 2.0' video? Thank you

yes, I'd find that useful too with expanding 1TB raid 0 DS220j two bay NAS to higher capacity by replacing the current x2 1TB drives to greater. I really should have researched better to start with and bought higher capacity drives in the first place.

Hello, just read your comment and I can share my own experience. Some years ago I purchased a DS218j (entry level 2 bay NAS) I started with just 1 x 4TB WD Drive, some years later I added a second WD 6TB drive and it simply rebuilt/copied my first drive (SHR) however it could only use the 4TB storage. So recently I’ve been researching a new NAS to replace my DS218j and found Synology are selling their own branded drives so in preparation for NAS upgrade I purchased their approved 6TB HAT3300 Drive and swapped the 4TB to my new Synology Drive, again, it simply rebuilt my storage pool and now I have 6TB of storage. I’ve been retired for 10 years and struggle with this technology but I love my Plex 😊

so the first one is a soft reset. Then you hold it again for a hard reset. if they had physical access to the NAS they could destroy the data on it much easier by just dropping it on the floor

There are a few different options for cloud flair. If you just use their CDN then quick connect will be better, though both basically the same security. If you use their proxy tunnel with authentication then that would be more secure then QC as you are only allowing allowed users to even see the NAS. There are similar offerings to this by both TailScale and Twingate [note twingate has sponsored the channel in the past]

Hi Will. Could you possibly make a video on how to create a valid self-signed SSL certificate authority without using a third-party service? As I understand, it is a somewhat involved process. Also, I thought I knew everything about my NAS, but today I learned about the soft reset feature. Thanks!!!
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill Год назад
So the problem is any self signed certificate, will NOT be considered valid unless you trust the root authority. Then every single browser will also have to be told to trust it. I have only done it once and it was a real pain! Might look into it for a video though thanks!

I just bought the Synology DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS, based on your recommendation (over the new DS923+). 1. Which of your videos would you recommend I use as a starting guide to getting set up? 2. I got the 60TB Iron Wolf combo from B&H, which should effectively give me 48TB of usable storage in RAID 5. Which SSD's (or is 1 enough..?) do you recommend to install on the base? 3. I'm a videographer / photographer. I have a couple fast external sandisk SSD's to edit from... I was planning to use this as my backup and cloud storage. It's still unclear to me if I CAN or cannot edit directly from this thing. Any thoughts on this? With the new updates to be able to use the SSD's as storage instead, does that change anything? Thank you!!!!

Could you do a more detail insight about Synology Active Backup for Business and the functionality compared to other backup-solutions like Veeam Backup Free, Acronis etc. (not snapshots)? For example: I cannot find any 'Health-Functions' for the backup like Health-Check, Checking if the Backup-chain is still functional etc.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill Год назад
I have been meaning to do a video on that! But yes you can do the heath checks on them, its called 'backup verification' from KC Backup Verification If Backup Verification is enabled, a scheduled trial run of the restoration will be performed in VMM for a configured number of seconds. This process will be recorded into a video for your reference, so you can confirm that the backed up data can be successfully restored in case of sudden disaster.

So i want to know that can i get the same performance of that if i use it on old pc nas or is there a benefit if I purchase one unit synology nas.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill Год назад
So you should actually be able to get more performance out of an old PC build, assuming its not too old. Desktop CPU's from 5 years ago will out pace the CPU's in most NAS units. The downside of building it yourself is ease of use

And where is the problem? I have a domain with a little vserver so i can download a valid certificate for my domain and then i direct a subdomain to my nas. I wonder if your traffic gets encrypted when a false certificate is used or if the browser just connects over https but never encrypts enything because the encryption/ decryption key is wrong.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill Год назад
Self signed certificates still have full encryption on them that cannot be decrypted without the private key stored on the NAS. If a browser did not encrypt the traffic then the NAS would refuse the traffic as it would be http traffic on an https port

@@SpaceRexWill I changed the name of one of my NAS and it broke my hyper backup. I have a 920+ and a 923+ Hyper backup was still looking for the old name. I had to edit the hyperbackup destination. So I suspect that changing the name will break any routine that uses server name and not address. This apparently happend because during setup, I let hyper backup find the destination NAS. Instead I should have typed in the address. Lesson learned... Never rely on the convenience of synology "finding" things for you. Now I am wondering where else I may have done this.

The question I have is how do you setup a persistent secure connection between an on-site and offsite Synology NAS’s with the ability to setup ongoing Hyper Backups from onsite to offsite. I tried Tailscale but it disconnected after about 7 incremental backups and I could never get them to connect again. Is there another more reliable way. Youll probably do a whole video just on this too. 😉
