I disagree with some of your synonym for demand. A request is not usually demanding. Timid is not afraid, but shy.
@englishtestsandlogic
@englishtestsandlogic 2 года назад
@Joanne Plunkett, "synonyms are words that mean exactly or nearly the same as another word." So, the synonym for "demand" is "request" because it's the nearest in meaning out of the three options(destroy, reject and request) Timid simply means: "showing a lack of courage or confidence; easily frightened". In that case, the synonym for "timid" could be "afraid" or "shy". Since "shy" is not in the options, that makes "afraid" the best option.

I'm with the 'easy' folks. 100% correct. I can see why people question the 'demand' - 'request' but I assumed it was a matter of the nearest in meaning - whether you were going to be nice or not about asking!

The correct meaning of "condone" is not properly understood by many who use it frequently. The answer "accept" in this quiz is the closest in meaning of the three given, but strictly it means to excuse or overlook, or 'let it pass'. A strict teacher who does not tolerate bad behaviour in class might condone it in the case of a boisterous pupil if she knows that it's the child's birthday. I don't like to be dictatorial because it's something I've learned only within the past few years, and I'm over 70 and a native speaker of English.

@@englishtestsandlogic Thank you for your comment. The touble with "condone" is that when you hear it used, or see it written, it is usually in a sentence like "I don't condone that". It's not always possible to tell whether the speaker or writer is using it correctly. Many people I've spoken to think it means to endorse, or approve, or encourage. That's what I used to think, until I read a book by Bill Bryson about misuse of words. I don't recall hearing it much during my years of education, or in most of my adult life. Its use seems to have become widespread only in the last 20-30 years.
@terrygoyan
@terrygoyan 2 года назад
@@tocaat2410 Condone as you noted is usually used with don't. Moot is also a word that many, if not most, get wrong. It really means that a moot point which IS arguable, and therefore should be skipped over. As in it's unlikely that agreement on the point will be forthcoming. NOT that it is an agreed upon point, which is how it is often used....

Looking at the comments… I kind of think that this quiz attracted mostly pretty well educated people. Can’t get a read on a population with a quiz like this on the internet. I got them all, but I can easily see many native English speakers getting 15/20 or even less. (And not because they are stupid.) “Fail” might be the wrong word. Perhaps there is a synonym that would be better suited? 🤔

How is 'past' a synonym for 'ancient'? 'Ancient' is the long ago past not just 'past'. 'Past' can be yesterday which is hardly ancient. And 'demand' and 'request' are the same thing?
@englishtestsandlogic
@englishtestsandlogic 2 года назад
@gary, according to Oxford Advanced Dictionary, demand means "a very firm request for something."...demand is the nearest in meaning to request in the options provided on the quiz. Past: gone by time and no longer existing. Whatever that happened yesterday, is no longer existing. @gary, in the options provided, which word is nearest to ancient? I hope my explanation helps... Cheers!😊
@garyranieri3856
@garyranieri3856 2 года назад
Sorry, friend, but can't agree. A 'demand' may be defined as 'a very firm request' but the quiz simply used 'request' and a 'request' is not the same as 'very firm request'. E.g. if a local radio station were to encourage you to phone in and make a 'request', would you call in and say 'I demand' that you play a song? And 'ancient' is not the same as 'past'. Yesterday is in the past but it certainly not considered to be in the ancient past. Perhaps kids might say something such as 'The 1970's? Man, that's so ancient' but that's slang. Peace- and that's 'Forever', man

Sorry but I disagree with some of your chosen synonyms. For example, to demand is not to request. It means to order, to command. To request is simply to ask for something.
@englishtestsandlogic
@englishtestsandlogic 2 года назад
@Mel Stiller, according to my Oxford Advanced Dictionary, "demand" means: a very firm request for something. You can check it out yourself. Anyways, thanks for your comment and observation.👍😊
