Tensioning your synthetic standing rigging with deadeyes is possible when you use the knot I created which I call the Shroud Frapping Knot.

Hey ! Thanks so much for you content (videos and blogs) it's helped me so much in switching to synthetic. I've finally installed my first stay (baby stay) and came back to check on the frapping knot details as I'm letting it stretch out and settle a bit. I used a simple buried eye splice to get the first end of the lashing onto the shrouds eye so that only have one end of the lashing to pull on to tighten. Figure 8 on a shackle to the halyard to tension needs no dogbones to redirect (at least for me). Hope to buy you a beer someday to show my thanks ! Fair winds and following seas

Sounds great! I did that same thing on my lifelines so that I would never drop the lashing in the water if I lowered my lifelines 😎

hey guys, that's a great looking boat! I would love to live on a sailboat but my wife says no way lol. its good to find a sailing channel out of Baltimore, your the first local sailing channel I've found. Baltimore is such a fun city. I recently worked in Baltimore for a couple weeks a special job, it was hard for me to get any work done because all I wanted to do was watch the boats lol. you gained a subscriber and cheers from harpers ferry WV

+whitney william Thanks! We've been here for five years getting everything ready to go, now it's time to make the first step. Baltimore sure does cater well to boaters. While there are places in the city where you would never realize how close you are to the water, from the water the shore line is packed with boats! All you need to do is tie up and walk a block inland and you are surrounded by everything you could want, all within walking distance from the boat. It certainly a fun city!

It looks like you guys are in the fells point area. Definitely some good bars around. I was working over the weekend of the pirate festival. that was pretty cool to see but I wish I wasn't working so I could have enjoyed it

+whitney william Oh cool, we stopped by the pirate festival! Fells point is our favorite Baltimore neighborhood. The boat allows us to live here quite affordably. We will certainly miss it while we are away.

This was extremely helpful as I am presently working out how to make a dyneema bobstay. I have a question. Is the double thimble rig necessary? If my chain plate can accommodate the pin of a sufficient strength shackle could I not use the shackle as the lower "thimble" and go from there? Cheers.

Herb I just found your site after watching another sailing channel. This was a very informative video. I will be changing my rigging next year on a Wauquiez 35 Pretorian sloop. She will be a cruiser not a racer. I have been reading about using synthetic rigging but have concerns about it standing up to wear and tear when cruising long distance. Not to mention UV. I am not fully versed on the past history of using this type of rigging for the cruising application. What is your opinion? Is there some reading you would recommend? Well I will get back yo watching your videos so I can catch up to your latest additions.

The blog is a good source: www.riggingdoctor.com I have gone through a bunch of information and distilled it down to what is on the blog. The sources are from The Riggers Apprentice, and a bunch of research papers from the mining industry with their use on dyneema. Samson Ropes also has really good information. I have spoken with the head of R&D at DSM and they told me that the outer 0.1micrometers gets destroyed by UV and then protects the underlying layers of dyneema. As for long term cruising, we prefer it because it can’t corrode and it is easy to inspect. Repairs are also easy to carry out with basic tools, letting you carry out repairs on your own anywhere you are.

Interesting stuff. I am curious though how the shrouts are connected on the mast side... you happen to have that somewhere in pictures?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 6 лет назад
The top of the stay is another eye splice. The splice simply attaches to the mast tang with a clevis pin. It is pictured on the blog where all this information is given in greater detail. The blog can be found at www.riggingdoctor.com/life-aboard

Except your purchase calc doesn't include friction. Your actually advantage is probably about 50% that's just a guess based on many years of rigging experience with cranes and winches.

That's very cool.. I was wondering if anyone has done this yet as this dyneema is very strong, stronger than metal cable and much lighter.

I need to replace my rigging in the next 2 years, this will definitely be something to consider.
@RiggingDoctor

If your budget allows, i would recommend turnbuckles for the ease of tensioning. If you can’t afford them, then this complicated knot will save you money but cost you time. Once it’s all set, it holds tension perfectly; we haven’t needed to adjust ours in years! That initial creep phase is rough though with only deadeyes! Every few days you need to take up the slack until the Dyneema enters Phase 2 of its lifecycle and stops creeping. If you have any questions about it, shoot me an email: riggingdr@gmail.com

@@RiggingDoctor my turnbuckles are solid, I would keep those. Metal wire shrouds are questionable, those will need to be replaced soon.

Curious why you didn't use a sheet bend when attaching shroud lines to the line to the winch. Understand that you wanted the 2:1 advantage, but how was the wear on the tension line.
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 5 лет назад
The wear isn’t bad. Everything is moving so slowly and for such a short period of time that no notable damage occurs.
@aaronprohaska4117

How do you test the tension so that both sides are the same? Is there a tension gauge like for stainless rigging?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 3 года назад
There is, but the tensions will only be the same if the boat is actually symmetrical. On paper, a boat is perfectly symmetrical with the chainplates at the same exact distance and position from the mast. This would create identical triangles which would result in identical stay tensions. The truth is the builders make it more or less symmetrical and therefore you are dealing with different triangles that have different stay tensions to make the mast stay in column. For synthetic as well as for steel, I check stay tension by “giving the stay a tug” and then checking to see if the mast is true. The tensions need to be in a relative order of tightness and as long as they follow the order and produce a straight mast, the actual value of tension is superfluous because the proper result is achieved.

I'm confused about one thing on your accompanying wrbsite article. It said the dead eyes took you an hour to make. What is your dead eye method? I'm worried, because you seem to know what youre doing....and dead eyes take me 10min.

Umm, there is a certain force you do want to stay with in. You can easily over tension and cause damage your chain plates and or compression post. Stay in your spec limits!

I do like the shroud lashing style, but... seems like a lotta time for adjusting a shroud. turnbuckle is about 5 times faster and more accurate tensioning.
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 5 лет назад
That is true about turnbuckles, but once the rigging is set, you won’t have to adjust it much at all. The longest we went without adjusting the stays was 2 years! Lashings are slower to adjust and more finicky, but they are also significantly lighter and cheaper than metal turnbuckles.
