They've done more than they could uphold. Keep in mind that the alternative to this man would have been ISIS for most of the time and doing any more against Assad than the US and NATO already had would have been a case for war to Russia. Arming the Kurds and complicating the war against Assad has definitely made sure Assad will have sleepless nights in the future. Erdogan, too... Keeping Turkey out (mostly, that is) and Assad in seems to be a better course right now than to risk Syria being overrun by some islamic militia or NATO drawn further into the conflict. Syria is slowly recovering, too, and there will be some day without Assad. We don't have to deal every blow to Russia and should opt for diplomatic means, especially with regards to Syria. If you think that is hypocritical, perhaps compare it to Saudi Arabia or the Taliban. Both have committed (and are in the process of committing) terrible atrocities, yet there was some point where it was time for negotiations. This has been going on for 12 years now -do you think any day of involvement more is going to make that place a better one? I would highly doubt that.
