According to an article in Scientific American, a huge contributor to the current unrest in Syria is drought more than ethnic or religious loyalty.
@mrniceguy7168
@mrniceguy7168 4 года назад
The mainstream media always wants to downplay ethnic and religious tensions but the fact of the matter is that if Syria was a natural country, it would not boil down to civil war as a result of drought and it would not require authoritarians to rule. That sort of logic can be applied to every conflict. You can say that Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union for their resources and anti-Bolshevism and anti-semitism were just excuses to get the party started. You could say that the American Revolution was not about independence and freedom from European systems of government, but that it was a tax revolt. It’s stupid.

The conundrum of the Syrian conflict is, who runs Syria if Assad is deposed; the answer is those terrorist groups. Assad isn't a humanitarian, but what sectarian problems his regime has created; would be increased tenfold by the many terrorist groups fighting Ba'athist rule. If I were of those oppressed in Syria, I would oppose Assad, but I would then have to take up arms against the terrorist fragments later on; which leads to perpetual war. I would rather bare Assad, than imposed Sharia law.

Yes but that was imperial conquest not a religious invasion. Just like wars between Poland and Russia were about land and trade controll, not about Catholicism or orthodox christian. But once again you're talking about a different topic. The crusades were not about Northwest Africa. They were about the Levant, Greece, and Asia Minor which were Christian lands of the Eastern Roman Empire.

BaileysBeads Thank you for proving my point. Syria has lost many of the things that create, a feeling of nationalism, once a country loses this, they effectively stop being a country, at this point only brute force can hold it toghether, most of the countries in the world are made up of differant entnicities and culture, but are held toghether either by a common feeling of nationhood or brute force. Syria currently has neither. Exept for on a small scale.

Hello Marvin. I do respect your point but as a Syrian allow me to express my objection about it, as we have multi-ethnic groups inside cities itself so it will be extremely difficult to segregate each group and give it its state, of course every group will desire Damascus and Aleppo to be in their state as those cities are the historical/ economical ones !! have a nice day

Actually Christianity was spread via conversion. Keep in mind that the reason Christianity became a legal religion was because it had become so popular in the eastern provinces such as Egypt. Places like Armenia and Ethiopia became Christian before the Roman Empire.
@bravo45

Sure, we can see the peaceful spread of "christianity" found all over the world in places like the US, NZ, CA, SA... the list goes on...
@AsiaMinor12
@AsiaMinor12 Год назад
Christianity was not spread peacefully, I'm sorry to say. It was spread violently via the Roman empire when they realized that Christianity could actually be co-opted into Imperium and harnessed instead of being a threat. Had the Roman empire not spread Christianity violently, then the religion would have only been seen as a bizarre off shoot of Judaism that is only in small pockets all around the Mediterranean.

That's not real about southern Turkey, the origin in north Syria belongs to historical Hittites and Hurrians which are among old kurdish ancestory who were a native people to Anatolia and north Syria and these peoples was Indoeuropean peoples not semitic such as kurds. I can't agree with false history fact, north Syria and south Turkey is pure Kurdistan, if you will or not the history name of that region is known as KURMI/KUR in sumer as mountain land mainly belongs to Hittites and Hurrians area

Turkey, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Israel all border Syria in a circle and this land mass borders Iran on its left. Afghanistan and Pakistan border Iran on its right. India borders the right side of Pakistan, China borders the right side of India and North Korea is bordering the right side of China. Georgia is on Iran's northern border and Russia is on Georgia's northern border. Georgia is practically on the eastern border of the Ukraine and the only thing between Russia and the European Union is the Ukraine. Saudi Arabia is just south of Iran and North Africa is just south of Saudi Arabia. Why didn't the teachers unions want you to know that?

+LandLord Mapping The attempts to impose democracy on countries with similar issues like Iraq and Libya have not solved them. Indeed, if anything they have exacerbated them as the local people vote along the very ethnic and sectarian lines that crate these conflicts. It's all a part-and-parcel of how the West has not found an effective means of imposing it's ideology upon states with radically different institutional backgrounds.

@@ObssesedNuker you cannot 'impose' democracy on anyone, effective democracy must be built bottom up, not top down, as in the average citizen must believe the best social contract is a democratic system. democracy was actually viewed positively when the usa invaded iraq, but the problem is they instituted the anti saddam, staunchly pro iran political groups to take power. this is what broke the horse so to speak.
