Health & Medicine on Khan Academy: No organ quite symbolizes love like the heart. One reason may be that your heart helps you live, by moving ~5 liters (1.3 gallons) of blood through almost 100,000 kilometers (62,000 miles) of blood vessels every single minute! It has to do this all day, everyday, without ever taking a vacation! Now that is true love. Learn about how the heart works, how blood flows through the heart, where the blood goes after it leaves the heart, and what your heart is doing when it makes the sound “Lub Dub.”
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy is a nonprofit with a mission to provide a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We believe learners of all ages should have unlimited access to free educational content they can master at their own pace. We use intelligent software, deep data analytics and intuitive user interfaces to help students and teachers around the world. Our resources cover preschool through early college education, including math, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, finance, history, grammar and more. We offer free personalized SAT test prep in partnership with the test developer, the College Board. Khan Academy has been translated into dozens of languages, and 100 million people use our platform worldwide every year. Very fascinating video giving a unique view on how cancer works. The case study of the mouse showing how the cancerous cells had spread quickly without actually causing a cancer was an eye opener.

Any chance the osteoporosis medication interacted with the medication given before the experiment?

@coburleson By suggesting people start looking more at the phenotype than the genotype, I think he's pointing out that although genotypes can vary a lot, the phenotype doesn't vary much. Maybe he's suggesting that this phenotype could be a kind of visual indicator as to what is causing the cancer to spread, Maybe a change in the environment has given this cell a huge advantage over normal cells (an advantage it wouldn't find elsewhere in the body). Just maybes and my interpretations :)

very interesting indeed,but how do we know that changing the "soil',in this case 'strengthening' an organ,will not make it more susceptible for cancering?
@RickyRoro777

Those changes did not cause a change from chaos to order. Rather, the egg is initially in an ordered state, which follows through into a more complex ordered state by following the specific instructions embedded in DNA. When the conditions are not good, it moves from an ordered state (the egg with the potential to grow) into chaos (the egg which has died and begun to rot).

Just watched this video about cancer and wondered if others watching had heard about Burzynski and antineoplastons.

@coburleson You and the video creator are clearly talking about different approaches to preventing cancer. You talk about preventing cells from becoming 'potentially' cancerous in the first place, he talks about preventing 'potentially' cancerous cells from becoming actively cancerous. I quote potentially because, until this video, I thought a cell was either cancerous or it wasn't. I didn't know it could be dormant until the right conditions in the body occur. Both angles merit discovery.

@coburleson This guy says that these cancers only survive under certain conditions. To my understanding, he means if you're liver is in an unhealthy condition, the cancer can take hold. If your liver is healthy, a cancerous cell may occur but would be unable to take hold. Maybe he means some mutagens and/or carcinogens merely encourage cancerous cells to grow, not actually create them?

9:05 "Somehow evolution is selecting out for phenotype...." So, what does Ager mean here? Why does he suspect that cancer's looking similar on the surface to an outside observer with a microscope or a CAT scanner would be in evolutionary favor?

@coburleson Nah, I won't! Jumped the gun a little here and went with the basic 'causes cancer' definition. Fail. However, from what he's saying, his approach to preventing cancer would be to prevent cancerous cells (already mutated / damaged) from becoming active. He believes controlling the environment of the cells is the key to this. If he's right, this kind of research could at least slow down cancer whilst it is treated.
