@@skadi6750 I had a hard time believing it too, but they apparently DO perform live every time. For example the violin player has fallen over during performances, resulting in horrible violin sounds etc. Also comparing the vocals to the studio version, there are definitely differences there. This video does have some inconsistent cuts though, so the video might have been compiled from multiple performances, but yeah, as far as I know, they really sound this good live.
I do believe this is a live concert, but I definitely understand the doubt, with Mairead's large history of pre-recorded performances. Singers are most definitely live if you look closely enough and have a good understanding of music.
Exactly. Irish history is full of heartbreak and suffering offset by serious partying, dancing, singing, drinking. It's how they coped with 800 years of oppression and impossible, rocky soil, constant rain, and a short, difficult life. What a resilient culture!
Dúlamán has EVERY in-between. Research into that song, as well as modern applications of it, have proven it to be extensively layered. It's about survival, adaptation, foreign influence being both a good and a bad thing, forbidden love, and, of course, seaweed.
I agree with you for the most part, but I would like you to check out Come and be welcome, which I believe was originally from somewhere around the border between Ireland and Scotland
The Irish part means: "Go home with them, go home with them go home with them, Mary. Go home and stay at home because a bargain has been made." Historically, the song means that the reason she can't consort with sailors is that she has been betrothed, usually at birth in the old times, and to someone she has no interest in, who may be more than twice her age. Many Irish songs seem happy but are quite sad. The ones, like this one about not wanting to have to go through with an arranged marriage that doesn't take the young woman's needs or feelings into account, are usually extra sad. This one looks happy on the surface, but she is consigned to a life of little more than slavery. Running off with a random sailor who at least may be her age may seem like a possible way out, but she'll never see her family again, and they need her help to survive. Maybe they need this marriage so they can all survive. Underlying Irish songs is this constant theme of hardship, poverty, and inevitability. She will go back and take her proper place in society and will bear it all as best she can, or, in other songs, she will die of "grief" on her wedding night, by poisoning herself or throwing herself into a river. There's a saying that goes something like, "Ah the Irish must be mad for his wars are happy and his songs are sad." There are variations.
This is actually helped out by the musical context created by the instruments. The verses about dancing and looking for the man she wants are in a joyous Bb major, and the skng switches to the relative minor key, G minor to indicate a serious turn. Edit: after listening to it again it's actually Bb minor. My bad
That last saying makes me wonder. Maybe, knowing the history, "his wars are happy" because they're fighting for their freedom (adds purpose). "His songs are sad" because they've been oppressed for so long. The English (which I assume the saying was by, in the first place) couldn't understand it from an outsider's view.
I’m American but recently found out my heritage is mainly Irish and Scottish which makes sense as to why I’ve always been drawn to Irish things.. I would LOVE to learn Gaelic. I already speak Spanish and it would be so cool to learn the language of my bloodline! It’s hard to find where to learn Gaelic though
I love the way that the transition from vocables/lilting in the beginning as a full conversation, to the fiddle as bridge to the english of the main bit of the song gives the illusion that they were on just the other side of some linguistic veil then suddenly, the violin’s magic allows us to understand them. I know that the lilting is not actual a language, but this is the only they could really achieve this effect in what is like a mixed Irish/English speaking audience, and it was done so effectively!
The lilting is known as mouth music. When Britain occupied and ruled over Ireland, they introduced draconian and brutal laws against Irish people known as The Penal Laws. These were laws specifically designed to destroy Irish culture and make Irish people destitute. The Penal Laws banned Irish people from doing many things. One of the things they banned were musical instruments. The British tried to destroy Irish culture and thought they could succeed by not allowing them play their cultural music. Frequently, breaking such draconian laws could frequently result in a summary execution of that person. The Irish resisted, determined to keep their culture alive and created musical sounds and rhythms with their mouths for people to sing along to and dance to. At the beginning of the song, not only is it an excellent musical choice but Celtic Woman are also honouring a very important and immensely proud part of our cu.tural history.
@@ItsmeeSaoirse I didn't actually know that's actually a thing (lilting) I thought it was an actual part of the song but in a language I don't understand because I'm not Celtic myself
You can almost understand that they're arguing like I had no idea what was called but I can almost picture what they were saying is if they were real words it's adorable I love it absolutely love it
As an Irish person, I am in love with this song the melody, the instruments and the lyrics I love the culture of Ireland the food and the scenery. One of the best places to live in. Edit: thank you so much for 907 likes i wasn't expecting that I appreciate it
I'm Irish but I live in England now. My connection to Ireland has grown stronger if that is even possible. We have an incredibly rich culture and it is so wonderful to know that people from all over the word are entranced by Irish culture. I am so so happy and proud to be Irish.
@@bosbosqueen9144 It's called "beal ceoil" in irish literally "mouth music". They are just sounds used to convey a feeling, in this case an argument between family members. They have no actual meaning.
Chloe and Lisa are absolutely brilliant in this intro. It's the acting and their stage presence what makes this lineup so great. Basically, all CW members are excellent singers, always have been, but Lisa is also an excellent actress and it shows. Chloe is just adorable; she always looks like she is having the time of her life on stage.
Plus Linsey is more into dubstep music :) as PaganBorn says lindsey is good but shes got quite a while before she catches up with violinist Mairéad Nesbitt Lindsey probably got a lot of inspiration from Mairéad. :)
If you look closely there is some lip synching going on. @3:07 there is nobody moving their lips for 2 or three seconds while the singing continues (Lisa turns back around while she is "singing" and she's not actually moving her lips). I am a big fan of theirs, this is literally the studio recorded version. Every note, every little thing is dead on. That's not possible with live music. I'm not knocking them, its very, very common for live music performances.
@Nonya I think it might be possible from what I've seen in other comments that this particular audio isn't from this particular event but at the actual event they were live?
I'm Irish Scottish English with a sprinkle of German but I'm manly English and Irish which is why I think my mom found me dancing to this (the right way) at 3 in the morning
Lisa ( who looks like Merida, in the brownish dusty purple dress) a teenager who wants to run away with a sailor Chloë( who looks like Rapunzel? The red dress with long hair) The older sister who wants to keep her sister preserved Susan( who looks like Elsa, Purple dress) the mother of the 2 daughters
I love how the first girl interacts with the audience. Her dancing with that one little girl was so nice, and I thought it was funny when she took that one guy’s hat.
As an American who’s just recently heard this song for the first time with no background or understanding of what this song means it’s the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard.
me too. this song makes me actually cry every time I listen to it. it's such a p u r e emotion that I cant even describe. this is also probably the most amazing song I've ever heard. its beautiful
It's about a family. The redhead is the flighty daughter, want's to head off into town ( Galway ) to meet the sailors for some fun. The fair headed girl is the sensible daughter telling her to forget about it, reminding her that she has work to do in the morning. The blonde woman is the mother trying to keep the peace. And the bald headed bloke is the father saying it's nothing to do with me. Sortof like the Cinderella story.
That’s Celtic folk music for you. It’s honestly my favorite cultural folk music (I’m also incredibly biased because Scottish and Irish are a substantial part of my heritage)
Tbh I don't think they're singing live for the entire song. Between 3:08 to 3:11 if you look closely it's pretty obvious that she's lipsyncing. They are singing live for sure, but I think the majority of parts where they dance and when there's lots of movement are all pre-recorded.
The blonde with the red/purple dress: a strong powerful voice that she can make it sound like she is shouting The red head in the brown dress:Does most of the ‘acting’ and is really good at doing rolls and flicks The blonde in the purple dress:A softer voice that is still loud and so enchanting
Chloe is the blonde with facial expressions she's been around since the beginning Lisa is a irish actor who joined them for a couple of tours she's the red head and the other blonde I can't remember her name she replaced one of the original members
Normally I'm not a fan of live performances with bands or groups, especially with multiple singers, but they sounds so lovely. The sound, the music, everything is so crisp and beautiful!
The melody: enchanting, ethereal, fey-like The lyrics: every rational part of me knows it's a terrible idea to have casual sex with random sailors in port towns but by God I'm gonna do it anyway This is why Ireland is the greatest country on earth
Sarah Irwin I thought the same but it seems Disney is not interested in Princess movies, the only way they will go back is if their is demand for it, Frozen and the recent live action remake of Cinderella definitely helped. Although I here their current project is a live action remake of Mulan.
lordmasterization I loved Frozen. I was happy to see a newer idea, and not another remake. I know it was similar to the Ice Queen fairy tale, but it wasn't Cinderella 4, or Little Mermaid 5. Disney needs to keep that momentum! Chloes voice is perfect for any role though. 😄
Everyone in this whole performance knew their part and carried it out without falter. I couldn’t stop smiling till the music stopped!!! I wish I could’ve been raised Celtic
I had a crush on these ladies ever since I was in middle school. Their specials used to play on our local PBS station at least once a year if not more. 4 of the most beautiful women on the planet on one stage is something I'll never forget.
this song is amazing and I’ve discovered it thanks to tik tok lol. I’m actually an Irish dancer, and I have been for over 10 years now, so I’ve been in love with Irish music and culture for forever so I’m so glad the Internet can appreciate it with me now.
Is there actually someone that wouldn't love to be in a pub with these women singing and dancing the night away together? Natural beauties with amazing voices and great actresses. Truly an enchanting combination that would have this American guy falling over himself.
I’ve seen a couple videos of them preforming this song and this is my fav cause the way they start it, almost like a argument, adds a little whimsey to it and makes it more fun to watch
i always laugh chloe in her big sister role its so fun. when this was performed in bethel ny during the emerald era chloe sat next to me as she began her banter with lisa i loved it xd!!
so do i girl haha!! like at a show a lady told me to stop being so loud and dancing so much but i cant help myself i love the group too much not to do it!!
Out of all the women that have been a part of Celtic Woman, these 4 ladies are definitely my favorite line up! Mairead is beautiful on the violin, and Lisa, Chloe and Susan all have such flawless beautiful voices that harmonize so well.
There's something so wonderful and dynamic about this lineup. They each give something different and create such wonderful stories together. By far my favourite.
Everyone else has commented on how good their voices are, their dresses, how one's hair looks like Merida's from Brave, how hot the tap dancer was, questioning whether this was Irish or Scottish, but what I'M wondering........... ........... HOW THE HECK DOES SOMEONE PLAY A SPOON?!?!??! 3:17 Edit: Holy shit, I did not expect this comment to get 1.1K likes.....
Of all the languages in the world, Gaelic might be the one I most wish I understood, just so I could fully appreciate one of my favorite styles of music.
The roles I picture the three playing based on their performances in the beginning: Lisa is the headstorng teenager with dreams of marrying a sailor. Chloë is her more responsible elder sister, possibly having already settled down with a family of her own. Susan would be their mother, working with Chloë to convince Lisa to stay at home.
they are portraying a typical Irish family with two head strong sisters arguing ,one practical, the other dreamy and stead fast mom in the middle with the dad at wis end as to what to do with them.
They look like they are having the fucking time of their lives and they are so good at interacting with the audience, i bet it was a blast being actually there
4:32 The lights of the town are blinding you The sailors they come and they go But listen to what's reminding you Handsome men surrounding you Dancing a reel around you Most beautiful part
You can see that the woman in the purple dress is or was a professional musical singer by her style of singing and her facial impressions, she is really good. It's also my favourite party by far.
The second girl who starts singing after the girl in the purple dress is my fav I'm sorry but the way she belts out her notes so effortlessly. I strive to be able to do that someday
Look how the light of the town The lights of the town are shining now Tonight I'll be dancing around I'm off on the road to Galway now Look how she's off on the town She's off on a search for sailors though There's fine fellas here to be found She's never been one to stay at home Home you'll go and it's there you'll stay And you've work to do in the morning Give up your dream of going away Forget your sailors in Galway Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú Téir abhaile riú Mhearai Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile Mar tá do mhargadh déanta Come now and follow me down Down to the lights of Galway where There's fine sailors walking the town And waiting to meet the ladies there Watch now he'll soon be along He's finer than any sailor so Come on now pick up your spoons He's waiting to hear you play them WHOOO! Here today and she's gone tomorrow And next she's going to Galway Jiggin' around and off to town And won't be back until morning Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú Téir abhaile riú Mhearai Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile Mar tá do mhargadh déanta Off with a spring in my step The sailors are searching Galway for A young lady such as myself For reels and jigs and maybe more Stay here and never you mind The lights of the town are blinding you The sailors they come and they go But listen to what's reminding you Handsome men surrounding you Dancing a reel around you Home you'll go and it's there you'll stay And you've work to do in the morning Give up your dream of going away Forget your sailors in Galway Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú Téir abhaile riú Mhearai Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile Mar tá do mhargadh déanta Listen to the music flow I'm falling for the flow of home I'm home to dance till dawning Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú Téir abhaile riú Mhearai Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile Mar tá do mhargadh déanta Stay a while and we'll dance together now As the light is falling We'll reel away till the break of day And dance together till morning Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú Téir abhaile riú Mhearai Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile Mar tá do mhargadh déanta Téir abhaile riú, téir abhaile riú Téir abhaile riú Mhearai Téir abhail gus fan sa bhaile Mar tá do mhargadh déanta Do Mhargadh de - do mhargadh déanta
Choose your venue carefully, saw them in the Symphony Hall Birmingham England lately but when I see something like the above I feel the Birmingham venue hadn't the size or capacity which suited their abilities.
I would love to see them too. But I have trouble getting around in the downtown area. I don't like open spaces. There is a nice performing arts center in the suburbs not far from where I live, but Celtic Woman performs at the large theater downtown. I have a balance problem and depth perception distortion, so cities are intimidating for me. I am a suburbanite. When I'm outdoors, I prefer to be as close to the trees as possible. To make a long story short, my balance problem and depth perception distortion is why I have not been to see Celtic Woman even though they visited my local metro area twice in the last few years.
I'm irish and am so so proud of being irish. Watching this and many other irish songs being introduced to the world by Celtic Woman and and other artists, in such fun and energetic way fillls my proud irish heart with with pure joy. And to know they bring joy to people around the world is wonderful. Go raibh míle maith agaibh, mo cháirde go léir timpeall ár ndomhan
They are enchanting no matter what they sing, whether it's the other ones or the new era they sound like they are magic, I bet u do too love to get to know you
I'm Irish and I'm immensely proud of my culture but what warms my heart more than anything in this video is seeing the young girl in the red dress dancing 4:00 and the older smiling girl singing along to the song 4:50. That is what music is all about.
They always wear such pretty dresses, like the Mairead's here and all the other big pretty ones they wear. I wish it was socially acceptable to always dress like that
You say "socially acceptable" as if it's a bad thing. Trust me, it's way more decent than what people where nowadays. I wouldn't mind if people dressed and acted the same way as they did in the Victorian Era.
I love all the comments saying 'This is so much better than the music today" A) this song isn't generations old. B) Do you as commenters realize this song is sung by a teen daughter, her mother, and her mother's friend/sister, and it's about the teen girl wanting to go off on her own, find her own "fun' with all the handsome sailor men, and avoid doing the work it would take to make her mother happy? By the ending verse, she's home to " dance until dawn." She's had her fun and is ready to grow up." I love this group, their music, and the culture that they represent, hailing with a Celtic background myself, I think these ladies have a wonderful fan-base, and I wish others who claimed to appreciate the culture through their music, would also read up on the culture and daily practices, it really is a beautiful way to live, and honestly no one is better for listening to Celtic Music, it just proves you have a particular taste, it dos not make one more sophisticated or cultured, just enjoy the pretty music
The song is in fact generations old. The biggest difference between their version of it and the traditional version is their translation of the gaelic. the music and the gaelic are however a traditional irish folk song.
Oh. I thought it was just a woman and her friends. I didn't realize it was a teen and a mother and her friend. This new context gives me an entirely new perspective..
Oh, my! I FINALLY realized Lisa is left-handed. She wears her mic in her left ear and she's playing the spoons with her left hand. As a fellow lefty, this just makes me happy.
Ray Fean is a lefty as well. As a percussionist myself, and someone with experience playing the bodhran, it is much easier for me to play it with my dominant hand as the main hand (the hand you see). He uses his left hand, which tells me that he is likely a lefty as well.
Tonight 27th Dec 2014 after 6 months of watching various videos of CW, I came to the conclusion that Lisa is a leftie. But my revelation came by her throwing the hat she stole to a dancer as they arrived on stage from the auditorium. To me as a righty it looked a very awkward manoeuvre. And as I just scrolled down I saw your post!
Okay that she wears her mic in her left ear I saw the first time in this video. In some others she wears it like the others on the right side.. I'm not sure why I only notice such things always after reading comments like this :D
