@@tejaswoman it's "Julio," a tertiary character who was voiced by Hank Azaria and taken over by Tony, after the show decided to match characters with voice actors of the character's ethnic background. In the episode "The Burns Cage," they changed Julio to being Cubano as well.

@@poetlover30 judging from comments on what little he does say, which seems to focus on Latino nationalities that have more Afro-Latinos, people are speculating it's a race/color thing and he's not going to explicitly say it. Could be wrong, of course; no insider information here. ETA: spoke too soon! Right below this comment, there's one reply from Jenny's co-creator, Kevin Bosch, confirming that's the intended implication. It's representing the intra-ethnic colorism/tintism/racism (my choice of words) some lighter-skinned Latinos have.

@@KevinBosch while in our culture there is some of that, more so , there are class divisions. Some nationalities /cultures are not seen as upperly mobile , as sophiscated or culturaled, even within the upper classes, simply because of different customs not because they are actually less, its just a perception. But I knew that I was not going to come home wiht someone who was too culturally different because I was going to get an earful, even if he had been Argentine, he had to be the right type of Argentina and Im sure Jenny understands exactly what Im talking about and that she knew , knows too. Of course I am 64 yrs old and we are talkng about 40 years ago and a lot has changed in the world and Argentina. But just and fyi, I had a black uncle who married my aunt , he was darker than brown and was called lovingly a certain name that here would seem derogatory that ended in a diminutive " rito" , I never evn realized it even though I very white ...then I have a cousin that married a lady who is Black but cant remember if she is Argentine or what , Im not close and he married as an older man. So its all relative . lol

@@desertedenblooms I’m not sure what point you’re making here. I wrote this episode, it was based on my experience with my family. I have an aunt who is a lesbian, and when she came out of the closet when I was a kid a part of that side of the family wasn’t really okay with it. BUT years later when she was in a serious relationship, living together, with a Black Puerto Rican woman, all of the sudden that intolerant part of the family set aside their homophobia and it became “why can’t she be with a white woman?” Of course it’s a class division, but a lot of class division is based on race and color. Latinos are discriminatory towards other nationalities other then their own, but bigotry towards people who are Black, Asian, Indigenous, Jewish, etc in Latin America still trumps that. Of course there were some families that were mixed, but that doesn’t invalidate the amount of times what we showed in the video actually happened.

@@walqqr1 yeah but the implication is that the issue is he’s more Afro Latino presenting, and older light skinned and white Latinos have stronger “mejorar la raza” beliefs. Colorism and anti-blackness are unfortunately an issue that pops up some way in almost every culture

@@walqqr1 yeah sorry if I used the wrong word but what I meant was nationalities. When I was growing up I was told I could only marry other Koreans, and that dating people from China or Japan heritages were looked down upon, and that anything South East Asian would be sacrilege

@@Joyride37 nah he was referring to his nationality, here in Latin America at least people discriminates more bc of ur nationality rather than your color of skin (it does play a part but I've noticed that your origin is what counts the most lol) and not every light skinned person thinks like that, surprising as it can be, I know people with darker skin colors that also think that europeans/first world people can "mejorar la raza"

@@walqqr1As the writer of this episode, it had 100% to do with skin color. But colorists will never admit that, so they use the guise of nationality to obscure that. No, Rolando was hoping that Jaime was dating a light skinned man, he just didn’t want to say THAT. It happened it my family, it’s what this episode is based on.

On something like my 10th re-watch & realize I keep forgetting to comment on "from the Tahiti... Resort... Spa... Doral" - so just like Gloria, Rolando is making up classier-sounding shit to cover details he finds undignified, and at this point the charade is getting so flimsy he can't remember where he's supposed to have been.

Close! It was more the idea that Gloria was telling people Rolando was away on business in Tahiti, but he was actually just staying at the “Tahiti Resort and Spa” in Doral. (Though it could be him also exaggerating… maybe he’s actually staying at the Tahiti Inn off Biscayne 😂)

Just now seeing this, and appreciating your explanation as I always appreciate them, but I like that it works both ways.... that is, for locals, they get that he's naming an actual place and Gloria has been covering his real location, while those of us far away can think that he's making it up because the four-part name (especially said so slowly that one could think he was inventing it as he went) sounds so fake.

Thought about whether there could be a political angle, but decided that wouldn't explain having an issue with fellow communist-country emigrés ( wait, double-checking, Rolando is of Cuban origin like most of the rest of the family, right, or is he from one of the other Spanish-speaking countries?) and not from the various countries he seemed fine with. I will say I knew we could count on Jenny that Rolando's problem was NOT going to be what Héctor assumed it was!

Hi, Puerto Rican here! So the implication here-so the gag with the list of countries is at the expense of a very serious topic within most Latin America, that of colorism. LatinX consider themselves to be a “mix” race, but within most countries the color of the skin does still affect how people treat you, and there is prejudice between lighter-skinned countries and countries with a perceived larger Native or black population. The countries that Rolando first lists are countries with a larger perceived “blackness” than countries like Argentina, Brazil and Colombia, which had a larger Spaniard or white descent. Cuba is another country where most Cuban-Americans who emigrated come from “whiter”, more well-off families. Hope this clears up some confusion!

Rolando didn’t like that his son was dating somebody with darker skin, but he didn’t want to SAY that, so he just acted like he’d have a problem with his nationality. At first he lists countries that are known for having a significant population of Afro-Latinos, the later mentions countries that are not known for being very Black. (Hector is simply Nicaraguan because the actor, Henry, is.)

@@KevinBosch Ah, and that enhances the line reading when Rolando - who had included Colombians in his list of nationalities associated with Afro-Latinos - indicates he would be fine with Jaime dating (lighter-skinned) Kevin, with Jaime pointing out that not only is Kevin a family member and therefore off-limits, Kevin is the one who's _actually_ Colombian.

Those were the unacceptable options. But there are socioeconomic + colourist polarisations in Colombia, thus the “what part of Colombia” question.

@@va8120 - Then you missed the joke. A Cuban dad would work his way down from the most palatable alternatives of what is expected (ie marry only a Cuban) to the least acceptable options (someone from a culturally dissimilar country). Despite what white professors teach in American universities, color is less important to Cubans than social capital and it goes both ways. Hence, some Colombians in Miami have the reputation of being super snobbish (depending on which part of Colombia they're from) which would be as distasteful to an old-school Cuban dad as someone from what is considered a more low-rent or hood type place. For example, my white Cuban classmate married a black South Carolinian and his family keeps insisting she is really Puerto Rican just to make it digestible. 😂🤣😅 Bless her heart for being a super good sport and learning Spanish just to satisfy Abuela's defense mechanism narrative.

@@lisettegarcia Hon, I’m not going to assume to 100% know the script writer’s intentions, but you can tell when the father liked the appearance of Kevin and he guessed Argentinian, Venezuelan, and Spanish, none of those were countries he guessed for Hector. That’s the context clue for what he thought about where Hector is from. (Not to mention those are Latin American countries with some of the largest afrolatino populations) Also, it’s clear that Jaime’s dad does not value being Cuban more than he values proximity to España e.g. Tia Gloria talking about his fake castellano accent in the Addams Family day dream video.

There have been mentions for years of Jasleiny's dad being "away on business," part of Gloria constantly explaining away the absence of the rest of the family, usually with exaggerated bragging on the stuff she pretended they were doing. The hints got a little bigger with each holiday, until Jaime hosted Thanksgiving and accidentally dropped the bombshell that this whole time Gloria has been separated.
