In the beginning there was the joy of singing together - and connected with it the thought of expanding, caring for and carrying it out into the world in a professional manner: The roots of the TÖLZER KNABENCHORES go back to the Tölzer Boy Scout group founded in the young Federal Republic. Folk and hiking songs were intoned during joint ventures. The group disbanded in 1956 - but one of them was determined not to give up: Gerhard Schmidt, then 18-year-old high school student, who would later become known as Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, re-formed the group and took over the musical direction. Rehearsals took place in the youth home in Bad Tölz. This laid the foundation for the unique success story of the TÖLZER KNABENCHORES.
In the following ten years, the reputation grew steadily: Through the first sound recordings at Bayerischer Rundfunk in 1956, the formation, meanwhile renamed TÖLZER KNABENCHOR, became known nationally and internationally. In the 70s, in addition to the growing number of concert engagements, there were also recordings and formative encounters with important musical personalities, such as B. Carl Orff, in the foreground.
Since 1971 the choir has been rehearsing increasingly in the state capital Munich, where it is now fully based. There around 200 boys in five training levels are trained by the artistic directors Christian Fliegner and Dr. Clemens Haudum as well as other singing teachers and, after the voice break in the male choir of the Tölzer Knabenchor, continued to provide vocational and musical support. The founder's daughter, Barbara Schmidt-Gaden, has been the director of the choir since 2016.
From the beginning, the training of solo voices was specifically promoted. To this day, the Tölzer Boys are the most sought-after performers in the field of solo boys 'voices: They are world-famous for the authentic cast of the boys' roles in Mozart's “Magic Flute”. This tradition began in 1964 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. There are now twelve CD and DVD productions with Tölzer Knaben available. Up to 250 international and national concerts and opera performances are on the program for the concert choir and soloists every year. For some it was the cornerstone of an international career as a singer or musician.
In addition to numerous domestic appearances, the TÖLZER KNABENCHOR gives guest performances in almost all European countries as well as in Russia, Israel, China, Japan, Korea and the USA. Well-known conductors such as B. Herbert von Karajan or Nikolaus Harnoncourt have already worked with the TÖLZ BOY CHOIR. The Tölzer Boys Choir and / or its soloists were not only guests or at the Salzburg Festival, but also at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and Carnegie Hall in New York. The choir sang in front of Pope Benedict as well as Pope Francis, not to mention many heads of state and royal houses such as B. Queen Maxima or Federal President Walter Steinmeier.
The choir received numerous awards for recordings under the direction of Prof. Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden. The Tölzer Boys Choir has always placed a special focus on maintaining “early music” in authentic casts.
