"Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?" I think the "someone else" is himself. Who he has become over time is so different from who he used to be as a child that he seems like a different person now. It bothers him because it's disorienting. This interpretation fits in with the rest of the song.

Wow I never thought of that! I've always interpreted it like a fear of actually never being unique in this world, that he is scared of just being "another person" and that it's uncomfortable.

Hi! ok, so I think that the forest is not actually a forest (?), what I mean is that the forest for me is a place in his mind, a place in the mind of all the people that he's talking about, like a safe place where there's no problems or stress, where he doesn't really need to be concerned about anything. When he sings about being afraid of "what's around the corner", I thinks he's talking about real life, the life of an adult that is responsable of the things he do, he doesn't want to be there so he goes to the fores, the safe place, where he's just happily dancing and singing without any concern. In the verses he is trying to express what is going on inside his head and he wants it to stop. I think the bridge is the most important part. When he "squint his eyes" he finds himself in the real life and realise that he had already ruined everything, and he is RESPONSABLE for that ("my treehouse is on fire and for some reason I smell gas on my hands"), he also compares himself with a kid, a kid that should be happy insted of concerned about this things. That's it, I think i didn't forgot anything (Sorry if anything is wrongly formulated, I speak spanish, I'm learning english)

I think the fact that he did also call a video on their youtube channel, where he was singing forest, "Forrest" (=for rest) supports your theory

"the rain" Tyler says. Josh nods, slowly "it's like..." Tyler pauses, searching for the word. "crisper," Josh says. exactly Tyler says, nodding. "almost like..." Josh frowns "red? maybe?" "mostly," Tyler says. "with a hint of orange" "orange, right." Josh points at Tyler. "that's right. I keep forgetting that one" "a lot of things are orange, though," Tyler says frowning. "Not where I'm from" Josh says darkly. "everything's just blue-black there".....

okay don't quote me on this but this kind of sounds like when in the bible the church was in the room and they started speaking tounges and everyone was thinking the same thing but speaking different languages, but they were not really speaking an actual languages which in the song refers to it as "singing songs that nobody wrote and then they began to be consumed by the fire which did not burn them and they began to worship referring to "hands held higher"

What if there's like a timeline, or a story from RAB to Vessel? For exampleMaybe Forest takes place before Trees,Forest is about people gathering and trying to help each other with their struggles Maybe it's somewhat like a concert but in a forest, but not exactly a professional one I guess.Then, Trees comes next, possibly much later,Maybe someone who was at the gathering/concert comes back to where Forest was sung, in some sort of empty, forested area. The person is struggling and wants to commit suicide, but then they're reminded of the concert, so they go back to the forest. While they're walking, they start to think back to what happened, and almost recreate the moment. They imagine themselves back there ("I can feel your breath"), then they realize that they can't recreate the moment and have deeper thoughts ("I can feel my death"). Next, "I want to know you, I want to see, I want to say 'hello'". This maybe means they wish they could go back but they can't. I don't know it's just an idea.

My opinion: I think the link between the two ideas going on in the song is that as fans start really listening to their songs they realize that they have grown up. That the reason they are feeling the way that they are is that they are no longer a kid. You also simultaneously allow childhood to be destroyed cause there is a new lack of ignorance . You can no longer ignore the fact that you are growing up because their music has woken you up from that blissful oblivian. By opening yourself up to maturity you have brurned down your tree house. And we are all doing this together. Wether it is because of twenty one pilots, or work or the internet certain things can take you away and force you to destroy your child hood. With this being said, there is no shade being thrown at TOP because they allow you to know what is happened when you loose childhood and make you aware of how you are growing up, and they allow you to say goodbye and to mourn your loss. Other things that pull you away don't allow you to do so. They only pull you out of child hood they don't wake you up. This group of people Tyler is talking about in the song is the group of the people who have been woken up. They all sing the same song mourning the loss of their child self. Tyler feels bad because his hands are covered in gas because not only did he burn down his treehouse he supplied gasoline for everyone else who listened to him. He didn't plan to tell them what he had done and how to do it themselves. If you made it to the end of this very long paragraph thank you very much. And stay alive |-/

I love this song so much. To me, it's all about how we are trapped in this forest and the "we" referred to in the chorus are the inmates, the rest of the world who are trapped with them and are lastly ignorant though all of them feel like something is wrong, but refuse to talk about it, and that's the chorus where they're singing songs that everyone knows but nobody wrote. The bridge is my favourite part since it zooms in a bit on this one person who seems to be taken over by the lack of freedom and is going crazy over it, so much that their trying to burn down the past and what was supposed to be, but still there's a storm coming and no one is safe. Finally, the part about someone else sharing your name just emphasises how there can be no complete individuality since society has long taken that away from us. In total, it's just truly beautiful.

I really liked hearing your perspective on the song, so I'll have to think on it further to figure out what I really think. But this is what I had thought before, just as a random idea, I guess. Personally I had always heard this song and thought of it as a sort of contrast between the struggles of this world, compared to the joys of heaven. I hear the pre-chorus and think of people being terrified as they consider the future, what lies ahead maybe even after death. Then the chorus is a celebration, being in heaven in the presence of God and celebrating with a crowd of people who share your faith and your joy. The verses I thought were just about life and struggling with living now, but holding onto the hope of something better. And then the bridge I thought was the same kind of thing. Especially when he says 'This is not what you're supposed to see...I am supposed to be king of a kingdom..." I think of living now, but remembering that there is more meant for us than just this life. There's more to it than just that, but that's just a quick summary of what I've always thought Forest was about. I'm not saying that I'm right, and I was really fascinated by the points you brought up (I'll have to listen to the song more, I guess). But I'd love to hear what you think about this, and maybe why you think it's more clearly about something different (what you discussed in the video). Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Thanks for making this video, though! It was really cool :)
@specialk9486

I like your thoughts on this. I had a similar line of thought. I always thought the chorus sounded like a worship service, singing hymns to God. And that that is our way of getting away from the worries of the world for a bit and thinking of something better. From what I know about the church Tyler went to I think they are probably a raise your hands in the air while singing kind of place :P We don't at my church but I have been to ones that do. And the being on fire would be being on fire for God, that passion for Him. I love this song and I love the sense of community the chorus conveys. We are not in this alone, let's all go sing about it together.
@funkyskeleton5691
@funkyskeleton5691 7 лет назад
Jaylen Connors i also thought the chorus was about people worshipping 'hands held higher ' and ' we'll be on fire as in like passion for Christ.
@ThePopSongProfessor
@ThePopSongProfessor 7 лет назад
Thanks for the thoughts, Jaylen. I think there's definitely an intended contrast there. I wonder if the good side of the contrast is Heaven or my theory, but I think there's something to be said for both sides. At the very least, if my theory is right, that gathering is good because it's a small picture of what Heaven will be like. It's powerful because it's Heaven-like.
@watermelon6973
@watermelon6973 7 лет назад
Jaylen Connors I think ty is reaching out to people to show them a place where we can find happiness (chorus) and in the bridge I think he means he looks at something and then thinks he is shaping it into something it isn't and then he wants to make himself look at things like he is in control but he can't because his childhood imagination is shaped into his current imagination
@tetheredbadflower
@tetheredbadflower 5 лет назад
I think the forest is “outside” in guns for hands. “well breathe together to the beat” would be the song that the chorus is coming from “well all join hands” “hands held higher” also shows this.
@linessjustliness6032
@linessjustliness6032 7 лет назад
To me, this "answer" would be happiness. Some of his other songs also share this hope for happiness, especially ones like Lovely and Guns For Hands. Tyler mostly talks about his depressed, anxious, less fortunate members of the clique, to give them hope & let them realize it will get better. Tyler really understands the troubles that everyone has, and he's a really great song writer.
@morgangeary7643

"i dont wanna be heard, i wanna be listened to" I feel can be referring to when youre trying to explain something and someone dismisses you and goes "i hear you man" and blows you off. i dont want you to hear, i want you to be there and listen to me. And i feel that he connects this song to everyone else in the forest by "does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?" because all of these people are going through similar things and how can we all be individual and special if we are all doing or are named the same thing. In the bridge where Tyler talks about how if he looks to hard things dont look how they should refers to everyone. Like anyone can look too close and see the wrong side or the "truth" about everything, and he does that with himself too. I think wen he says "This is not what youre supposed to see,please, remember me i am supposed to be..." is like him saying to himself, that he really isnt where he want to be in life, he doesnt look at how he burnt down his treehouse, but he has gas on his hands. so he knows that he did it, but he doesnt know how he got there even though he looks so close at things. I've thought about this before but i think its possible that the "hands held higher, we'll be on fire" may open up for the bridge where Tyler says that his tree house is on fire and he smells gas on his hands. I feel that he did that to connect this song to trees because he burnt down his tree house on his own, but all of the other people in this forest have done that to their own tree house as well. im just pulling at straws here, but this is what i thought.
@kelseyschubert5581
@kelseyschubert5581 7 лет назад
the bible talks about tongues of fire and and languages nobody knows but everybody understands and things of such that tyler relates to in the song. i believe tyler is talking about being terrified of life just like the rest of us but we have to think of something better to move on. I think his way of thinking of something better is thinking of how in the end he gets to go to heaven with the rest of the believers. I think the forest represents heaven. he talks about hands held higher and I think this refers to praising God. there is a lot of direct terminology in forest that would lead me to believe he is quoting from the Bible. anyway that's my thoughts on it. I loved this video by the way ;)

On Vessel and RAB I think Tyler relates his own personal struggles to biblical narratives. In Forest he seems to be telling the story of Adam and Eve, especially because: "I took some food for thought, It might be poisoned." The Forest then would represent the Garden of Eden, and the song of suffering that everyone sings together is the experience of sin. I think this theory is backed up by the rap which is like Adam talking to God. "I'm supposed to be king of a kingdom swinging on a swing," which I take to mean that he's meant to be innocent and childlike to rule the garden. But he goes on to say "my treehouse is on fire and for some reason I smell gas on my hands" meaning he's burned his place with God through sin. Trees in their music tend to represent God or his presence, so it makes sense that Eden, which was full with God's presence, would be represented by a forest full of trees. I think this song is meant to convey guilt Tyler feels for committing sin, basically saying that he feels just as responsible as Adam for bringing sin into the world. I also think of Goner and Trees in this context, Goner being Adam speaking and Trees being the voice of God searching for Adam in the garden.

I think the song is a contrast between finding hope on earth and finding hope in heaven. In the original video for Forest, the title is spelled "Forrest" or For Rest. The singing songs nobody wrote points to a future hope for Christians, singing a "New Song" like it says in Revelation where our ultimate rest will be after this life is over. The new song will be the song nobody wrote, because it's from God or angels, not of human origin. He is struggling with his emotions and thoughts, lamenting the death of his childhood hopes and dreams for his life and his poisoned thoughts. He realizes his ultimate hope is in heaven, not in the things he adores on earth, which do not bring ultimate hope, and that he has damaged himself by what he's done. Instead of being terrified of the future, we can look to our ultimate hope of heaven. We'll be on fire with our hands raised, singing and worshiping God. We will be on fire from the Spirit of God and being truly alive.

the reason bonus tracks like lovely, forest, kitchen sink, and other regional at best songs was because when tyler and josh signed to fueled by ramen, the idea was to make tracks from rab into a major album debut thing. instead of signing over specific songs, they just signed over the whole album. tyler secured the copyright for self-titled under his band name.

I think forest is about how everyone is different ( expressed in the line: "Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name") but everyone is equal (Expressed in the chorus) and they're all in peace.
@chloewilson8832
@chloewilson8832 6 лет назад
When I listen to the song, I associate the "forest" to a crowd or general public. It ties in to the recurring theme throughout the song of having no individuality - "Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?". For instance, "we stay in place cause we don't want to lose our lives" presents the notion of being afraid to stand out from the crowd or perhaps changing so much that you become another person from what you used to be -to be an oak in a pine forest is scary. In relation to the chorus, being "down in the forest" would set the person in a collective group. As said in the video, the people are all "singing" something together in unison - something "everybody knows" and something "nobody wrote". For me, that meant that they were all unified by something that had no limits - nobody wrote it, they're free to go as they please and because everybody knows it, they feel safe. The fire mentioned could be a symbol of the passion and strength that these people now have from not being constrained. With this general idea, the same theme could relate to "Trees" with the trees being individual people and also fits with the albums "self identity" focus.

So what I want to tell you about is All Time Low. This band is another alternative rock one and has amazing lyrics. I would love to see your view on Missing You, All I Ever Wanted (Me Without you), Drugs And Candy, and just All Time Low in general. Lastly, I have come to adore Lovely by Twenty One Pilots, as it is an amazing song that makes you all happy inside. I think the "This is not what you're supposed to see" part is a bit more that Tyler is saying that "normal people" don't see their surroundings the way he does and somethings not right with him because he sees things differently. Also the "feeding on emotions" part always reminds me of the track by track of Vessel where he says that sometimes he likes to be sad and I think it had something to do with that I just don't know how to put it in words that would make sense to people who don't think that way

Another thing I'd like to point out about this song is that when I hear it, I feel like Tyler's also talking about how his imagination, his creativity, his world-view essentially, have become poisoned; it's like when he tries to understand things better, to think about them deeply, his brain gets a nightmarish filter that makes everything seem unnatural and terrifying and WRONG, or he only focuses on what's wrong about things and can't get past it, and he's tired of trying to understand things because his introspection always goes goes wrong in some way, leading to him destroying things or twisting his perception of those things until they scare him (I think the tree-house represents his sanity, his hope, or just things he cares about) even though he intends it to help him understand the world better. I know that might be a stretch and kind of complicated, but that's the vibe I get; that's kind of how I perceive the song based on the struggles I myself go through.

I honestly love the song Forest. I drew a drawing about the chorus, actually. I drew a group of people who seem to have problems (anorexic, self-harmer, etc.) with their hands up, singing their songs happily with tears in their eyes. While these people are singing, the forest around them starts to burn/be on fire and they don't care. You can interpret it however you want, but thats how i interpret it. Anyway, nice video. Thanks for making this :D I love it

I also love songs like forest (similar to kitchen sink), it's like up to you to decide what it means to you. It also to me is just a song that brings everyone together, one of those songs (life experiences) that everyone can relate to. The forest is different for everyone, depending on who you are, the forest could be suicide, bullying, death, etc. and everyone in your "forest" gets what your going through. IDK JUST MY OPINION

I’ve always interpreted the concert you referred to as heaven. Once we get to heaven, we will be surrounded by other believers singing praises to God. Our hands will be held high, in praise, we’ll be on fire, referring to passion, singing songs that nobody wrote, referring to how we will all be singing the same praises regardless of language barrier, similar to how speaking in tongues was in Scripture. Hope this helps!

What I think... That as he later realises that he himself is the destructor of his own peace, of his own innocence, that even after being amidst the crowd he's still an individual being. In the verse "Down in the forest, we'll sing in chorus.... We'll be on fire, singing a song that nobody wrote" (something of that sort I'm not amazingly familiar to the lyrics right now) Maybe, he means that yes, the crowd, the chorus yearns for peace, and we'll pray or sing in chorus a song that everyone knows. But deep down, the trees of that forest, that is the individual in that crowd, also says that he'll, along with the chorus, is asking for individual peace as well. I mean, yes, I know you didn't understand. That while singing prayers with the chorus, the song that everyone knows, I also sing the song that nobody knows. That nobody wrote, but me. That nobody lived in that song but me. And the song symbolises life. So he'll also sing for the life he's written and nobody else. So maybe the "We'll be on fire, singing the song nobody wrote" means this. Does this make sense now? I hope so...

I believe the chorus means something different related to God. “Down in the Forest” is actually in the church. “We‘ll sing a chorus one that everybody knows” refers to the people in the church singing together. “Hands held higher” is putting your hands in the air to worship God. “We’ll be on fire” is having the Holy Spirit fill you up. “Singing songs that nobody wrote” refers to when the Holy Spirit fills everyone in the church up sometimes they start to sing a song and everyone joins along but it was never written before. I’ve seen it happen and it is amazing.

"Down in the forest, we'll sing a chorus, one that everybody knows" - This suggests a mood of unification amongst the group of people. "Hands held higher, we'll be on fire" - I interpret this as symbolizing a revival amongst the group of people who have come to the Forest in search of something / being filled with the Holy Spirit - similar to the disciples in the upper room, mentioned in Acts. "Singing songs that nobody wrote" - singing and speaking spontaneous songs and tongues - "everybody knows" the words as mentioned earlier, despite the songs being completely spontaneous. This unifies the group of people even more. The verses describe the every day struggles people face and the flaws we all have. While the choruses are hopeful and provide direction to the listener. I feel that Forest is a message of encouragement to people to seek out God genuinely, in a new non religious way. The image it creates in my mind is a large group of people worshiping God together in a non conventional way.

The chorus is a beautiful picture of heaven. The Forest is heaven (obviously). Especially the "hands held higher, we'll be on fire" part. That is something that is very common thought in the Christian community about heaven. "Singing songs that nobody wrote" is also a great picture of heaven. Heaven is a place where (as boring as it sounds for us on Earth) we all sing praises and worship God for eternity, singing songs that no one wrote.

Some thoughts that are probably too late to be shared (quite literally as it's late at night now) 1. Singing songs that nobody wrote. In the chorus, we are singing the songs that we all know but nobody wrote, so if we put singing songs as like feeling the emotions and stuff, it's like we all feel sad, we all understand that feeling, but we don't know why or where it comes out. And it's kind of like depression, you don't know why you are sad sometimes. There's no reason (nobody wrote) that gave this sadness we all have (everybody knows) 2. Swinging on a swing. This could refer to life. When we stop swinging on a swing, we will be just sitting on the thing, which is the lowest position of a swing. And we are supposed to also feel the *ups* and downs of our lives. And we can only feel the ups or happiness if we actually swing and get higher. Does that make sense... I don't know it's late and I only thought of that all of a sudden.

"Someone else has your name" - I think that "someone else" is yourself - at a different stage of your life. You have the same name but find that you are a 'different person' than you were before and it is disorienting that you can chage so much that you seem to be a different person and disconnected from who you were before. That interpretation is related to a lot of the rest of the song too.

It sounds like he is on about the whole thing of going to church. Here's my summary: V1 I don't know why I feed on emotion There's a stomach inside my brain - That feeling that you get from worshipping, can be really profound and leaves you wanting more I don't want to be heard I want to be listened to Does it bother anyone else That someone else has your name? Does it bother anyone else That someone else has your name? Your name - Referencing the Lamb's book of life P-C I scream, you scream We all scream 'cause we're terrified Of what's around the corner - We're all frightened of death and what comes after We stay in place 'Cause we don't want to lose our lives - Abiding by God's will for fear of if we don't So let's think of something better C Down in the forest we'll sing a chorus One that everybody knows - Signing well-known worship songs together at church Hands held higher, we'll be on fire - Hands raised in worship, fire either meaning on fire for God or using tongues Singing songs that nobody wrote - All worship songs in essence are God-breathed and written by God ie no human came up with them in effect V2 My brain has given up White flags are hoisted - Surrendering to God I took some food for thought It might be poisoned - Taking communion, The Bible says that if you approach the table without forgiveness, you eat and drink damnation on yourself The stomach in my brain Throws up on to the page - Reading the Bible, or more aptly, the Bible reading you - or maybe Tyler just on about writing his emotions Does it bother anyone else That someone else has your name? Does it bother anyone else That someone else has your name? B Quickly moving towards a storm Moving forward, torn Into pieces over reasons Of what these storms are for - When you walk with God, you walk through storms - what are these storms for? I don't understand why everything I adore Takes a different form when I squint my eyes - Closing eyes in prayer, reflection that your Earthly desires are ultimately meaningless when you go to the grave Have you ever done that When you squint your eyes And your eyelashes make it look a little not right And then when just enough light Comes from just the right side And you find you're not who you're suppose to be? - Realising that you're not fully walking the path that God intended you to This is not what you're suppose to see - Not what the world says is the right way to live Please, remember me? I am suppose to be King of a kingdom or swinging on a swing - What's my purpose, God? Something happened to my imagination This situation's becoming dire - realising the life you are living isn't great My treehouse is on fire And for some reason I smell gas on my hands - Your actions are the architect of your own downfall for the temporary house you built This is not what I had planned This is not what I had planned Thoughts?

I think "forest" is a reference to the metaphor, "in the woods" meaning lost or in trouble. And the overall meaning is everybody has their problems and they're celebrating them when he sais,"down in the forest, we'll sing a chorus,one that everybody knows. Hands held hire, we'll be on fire, singing songs that nobody wrote" But I agree with the way he explained the rap.

Lovely:Tyler wants to make somebody to believe they are lovely Ode To Sleep:Tyler feels nice in the morning, but later, BlurryFace, despite him NOT being in the album,makes him feel worse Goner (2012):Tyler looses to BlurryFace Goner (2015):Tyler defeats BlurryFace Stressed Out:Tyler feels nostalgic Johnny Boy:Johnny is the type of boy people walk all over..and Tyler decides to make him feel better, like he has meaning

I think that by "I don't understand why everything I adore Takes a different form when I squint my eyes Have you ever done that? Just my thoughts (and I’ll leave out the more speculative ones), “Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?”. I believe this references their band name, and the fans are the actual Twenty One Pilots...the band name is simply a reminder to consider the pilots when making decisions (as in the play). This is less a question to the audience and more a statement that this consideration weighs heavy on his mind. Another clue to that is when he repeats “Your name” at the end of the chorus like he is asking the question to a specific person (or in this case people I.e. The Twenty One Pilots). There could be a connection between “Forest” and “Trees” with the saying “”Can’t see the forest for the trees”. In “Forest” the audience seem to be the trees (We stay in place ‘cause we don’t want to lose our lives), and again he lumps himself in with everyone else with “we” (again Twenty One Pilots). So the band doesn’t really have a name, only a purpose so the crowd is “Singing songs that nobody wrote”. I think “Trees” was originally written just as the Professor said. Tyler used to wander into nature and look for God to speak, and I can certainly relate to that. I feel closer to God while sitting alone in a forest than I ever have in any church. But I feel that the song came to have a double meaning which ties back to that common phrase. The reason it has been on three albums and is still used as the closer on the Bandito Tour is that it’s also Tyler asking the crowd if they hear what he’s saying...do they feel him?...and he wants to hear them. Sorry for the long post ||-//

I think Forest is about anxiety, Tyler is scared and shook, not wishing to deal with whats ahead, things he mentions like I scream you scream (etc) is referring to any panic attacks he may have or has had or is having, I feed on emotions refers to Blurryface's need to think even if the thoughts are illogical and take it in, but I haven't yet thought about what the fire thing means yet.
