Türkiye Holiday | Countryside | Rest | Farm | Bayram
Wednesday, June 28, 2023
The intense summer heat has arrived, and even early in the morning, the warmth was palpable. Today marks our second Bayram in Türkiye. The first was Ramadan Bayram, celebrated after the fasting period of Ramadan.
Türkiye has two Bayrams.
The first is Ramadan Bayram, also known as Şeker Bayram, a three-day celebration where people dress in their finest clothes and enjoy feasts after fasting.
The second Bayram, which we’re celebrating today, is Kurban Bayram, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice. This holiday commemorates the story of Prophet Abraham, who was willing to sacrifice his son Ismael as commanded by Allah, but was stopped by Allah, who provided a ram to sacrifice instead.
Today, I had the unique experience of witnessing the slaughter of a lamb firsthand. It was fascinating to see how the lamb calmly accepted its fate, almost as if it knew what was happening.
After the sacrifice, we visited my wife’s great-uncle’s house. The clean and modern interior was quite a surprise for a rural setting. We also enjoyed a variety of fresh fruits. For someone like me, who hasn’t spent much time in the countryside, it was both unfamiliar and educational.
For dinner, we had lamb that my brother-in-law butchered and my father-in-law grilled. The meat was tender and flavorful, with no strong odor.
Suddenly, I found myself thinking about next year’s Ramadan. Ah, time to fast again...
