T-38 Talon Action at MCI with FULL AFTERBURNER Takeoffs

This past weekend, our friends at the 509th from nearby Whiteman AFB graced MCI with their presence. 68-8179 and 65-10419 and their 60's era J85 turbojets were amazing sights and sounds. Enjoy these highlights from their visit, including two FULL AFTERBURNER takeoffs and a "carrier break" over the field.

In the daylight it’s extremely hard to notice. Listen to the sound though, that’s how you know!

I have been an aviation enthusiast for over 40 years and only today did I learn that the T-38 has afterburners. It just never struck me as a jet that would have them, especially as a trainer, but then again, considering what the pilots will be transitioning to, it makes sense.

I mean they’re not the Blue Angels and at an international airport they have to get cleared to certain altitudes to really yank it up. It was also nearly 100° so performance wasn’t great, and speed had to be built up before any crazy maneuver could be done.
