Well, they both are from very homophobic country, so Julia's beliefs and remarks are not that surprising. At least Lena supports the LGBT community. @@Іапа I mean, what do you want me to say? The homophobe had a romp with an unknown girl? (Yulia said it wasn't love and just "banal desire", but I think they meant carnal lol. So either it was a novelty or just "desire of the flesh". But still lacking of love, which is my point.) I also think that the closeness of being together all the time creates a bond and feelings of love. Familial love and platonic love. Very real emotions, but very different from romantic love. Also, the songs don't hold much weight as evidence for me. 1. Believe in Goodbyes isn't an official song for Lena from what I can see. 2. Queer-baiting is half of what tatu was. I don't see why they wouldn't throw in a line in a song talking about "our love is forbidden". That can be translated multiple ways. Open to interpretation. Open to hope. I would also like to put out there that the "safest" way to have lesbians in the public... is for them to not be lesbians. Especially in the homophobic Russian climate they came from and almost every place they went to tour, given it was back in the early 2000's. Although it could just be easier to find straight girls who want to sing and act. It's not my goal to convince you that there wasn't a shred of something there, but it's too little, too late for me.

Cant say it was entirely fake when both girls have always been bisexual. There was chemistry between them, at least in the beginning. Being in t.A.T.u enabled them to experiment with each other (and they did). Also, while on tour they slept in the same bed. Remember, Russia was deeply homophobic at the time and it was illegal to be gay. Lena was also made to attend regular confessional meetings with her priest and their parents were present at all major contract meetings with their manager and producer. The girls seemed affectionate with each other until Yulia became pregnant. From that moment onwards, they slept in separate rooms, onstage kissing became hugging and then just handholding. The relationship of t.A.T.u quickly deteriorated from that point onwards and Lena wanted out. Yulia then threatend to sabotage Lena's career if she tried to leave t.A.T.u and they parted. Yulia feels guilty for destroying their relationship and the image of t.A.T.u, and Lena has never forgiven her for it. Now as women and solo singers, Yulia has made music video clips about her attraction to both men and women and Lena remains an activist for the LGBTQ community.

“While begging her baby to hit her one more time”, I pictured two very different scenarios in my head when he phrased it like that. A baby literally slapping her and bdsm. People actually thought t.A.T.u. were lesbians, years after it came out that it was fabricated. Some of my classmates from middle school and high school thought they were really a couple.

Lena is a fantastic ally of the LGBTQ+ community and I’m glad she never disappointed us. Unfortunately Yulia post-2014 was still profiting off the hot lesbian act - check her song ‘Didn’t Want to Do It’. However, knowing the actual legal challenges people face in Russia and allied nations, their debut may be even more relevant now than it was back then. It’s an iconic song and it actually helped break barriers, even here in Western Europe. It helped us to confront issues we were only just starting to confront.

Emilie is not a great role model. Not to me, and I’m afraid that many have walked the same route as I did ten years ago. When I was 15, she actually encouraged my depression instead of making me feel better about it. Enchanted and Opheliac are still albums that I enjoy, but lyrics like The art of suicide... @Idk giving a bad name? They did a lot of good. While it was an act or not, tatu gave me someone to look up to as a teenager. They delivered bops, and were waving the flag of acceptance long before it became popular in 2011 when we were flooded with born this way, firework, we are who we are type music. They were incredibly ahead of their time, and while the origins of the group had dark roots, they did a lot of good. After leaving their producer they participated in marches for gay rights and were pelted with eggs, beer bottles, water etc. Yulia took a weird turn into homophobe-land, but Lena still stands with the community. Melissa Etherage once said she didn’t care that it was an act, the fact that they could take a queer message and use their fame to push that despite they themselves not being lesbians, in the end it’s a triumph for the gay community regardless. They took an unfortunate situation of exploitation and did great things with it. No matter how homophobic Russia becomes, they will forever have to live with their biggest musical export being about as gay as it gets, and I love that lol

I still think about secretly watching the all the things she said mv behind my parents backs as one of my earliest "queer awakening moments" and though it is very disappointing to find out that it was all a gimmick it so important to unpack the elements of exploitation of minors/hypersexualization of lgbt youth for the male gaze and the inherent homophobia that lies within that sort of "marketing". You might be not wrong, but your analysis is quite too 2020. I grew up in Russia with their music at their early days of 2000 and I remember how they were welcomed to industry. In fact it’s crazy to understand, but the Soviet legacy of law making mens’ homosexuality illegal was abolished only in 1993, just 6 years before Tatu! In 90s, many Russian artists (male and female) played with this theme in their music and videos to „celebrate“ the new freedom of minds after USSR, but no one had courage to show it openly - to kiss. Even in Russia ppl knew that weren’t real lesbians. They were marketed to the public of their own age (14-18yo), teens who haven’t defined their sexuality yet! That’s why it wasn’t watched as „dirty“ - everyone experimented in their teen years. Listen to lyrics in “Malchik Gay” - it talks about girl being attracted to a gay man, strange to be sung by “lesbians”? And believe me, if you’ve watched 1-2 early untranslated interviews (2000-2001), you’d understand they weren’t forced at all (and they confirmed it years after separation with Ivan). Girls were quite on the same boat with Ivan, they wanted people to react more, see how far they can push people’s boundaries. They didn’t expect business to go further than Russia and its neighborhood. Watch their Kremlin performance in 2001. Their producer asked them to show THE kiss, because Kremlin is a political residence of Putin (even if back in that time he didn’t care at all about LGBTQ+) Their image made them special and gave more sense to their songs. The beautiful story of 2 girls loving each other and protesting against the society for their love were more important and powerful than their real uninteresting and basic lives (of straight girls).

In 2007, the girls released a statement: "Many of our fans of alternative sexual orientation thought that we lied and betrayed them. This is not true! We've never done that and we always advocated for love without boundaries." They may have been "actors playing a role" but the message is what was most important. As controversial as they are, T.A.T.u changed many people's lives, including mine. I'm so glad they existed for a short time.

The video was like this, because it is the theme of the song. Even in russian it´s about a girl, who fell in love with another girl. After the video the whole world interpreted, that these two girls have to be in a relationship because there absolutely couldn´t be another option. Their manager sensed that pretty early and made a whole story out of it. Then these two were forced to admit that they had a relationship until Yulia got pregnant and the lie was pretty obvious. Not to forget these two were 14 and 13 when they started, 15 and 14 when the video was shot and the song "Ya soshla s uma" got released in Russia and they where 18/17 when "All the things she said" was released worldwide. They were extremely vulnerable and easy to influence by their manager
