What a great review David. I am looking into finding one or both of these books you talked about today. Love your site and always look forward to hearing what you have to say about magic and mentalism.

If you like mentalism, you will find Mind Myth and Magick quite valuable for general magic interest, the encyclopedia is filled with little bits of information that at least I never knew.

Hello, David. I completely agree with you about buying books to use and not as investments. I‘ll be parted from my magic books when I’ve parted from this earthly plane. Like you, I bought Mind, Myth, and Magick when it first came out. And, also like you, I annotate the table of contents. I made up and performed Coincideck, p. 220. Fantastic effect. As I noted about it in the ToC: “Miraculous but simple to do”. I wonder what your note for it is. Thanks for your videos. I really appreciate and enjoy them.

The TA Waters book is "new" to me every time I go back to it. What I missed from previous readings is amazing.

I was able to find a copy of this book a few years ago for around $189.00 plus tax and shipping. It is a gold mine in my opinion.

Yes, it is a gold mine, and based on the prices I am seeing today I would say you got a good deal

Mind, Myth & Magick is a fantastic book. If you are serious about magic it really should be on your shelf (and very well read). And David, I'm ***TOTALLY*** with you on books are references. They are investments in knowledge not financial investments.

Absolutely, Mex, all of my books are for reading and using. I mark them up, annotate the table of contents, and jot notes in the margins. If I am not mistaken, I believe Houdini did the same with his working library.

some people say this is the best mentalism book do you think its that good ? practical mental effects to date is my favourite theres just so much good material

My personal pick for "best" would be 13 steps. There may be better routines and even more advanced ideas in TA Waters's book, but if a dedicated performer puts in the time to learn the basics as taught in 13 Steps, he or she can take that information into uncharted territory and create a truly unique show. If I had to choose only one book, it would be 13 steps, but most magicians aren't looking for principles that they have to develop into routines. Most want polished audience-tested routines, and while you may find some of that in 13 steps, for the most part, it's a book of foundational principles, and that's precisely why I like it.

is the material more close up focused or for stage ? also do you use this material in the real world or just read the book for ideas?
@DavidDellman

One of the great things about mentalism is that most of it can be done in small settings or on stage. We aren't talking about big props here but about mindreading. In any book this size, you will find some pipe dreams, but I found many very workable, practical ideas in this book.

what are your favourite effects from the book?
@DavidDellman
@DavidDellman 5 месяцев назад
That's hard to say. I love the cleverness of his jewelry box, but I seldom perform it. I also love his management of Kurotsuke. I think this shows his genius. But as with most magic books, there isn't one effect that is IT but rather the ideas the work generates, sometimes not even related to the effect in question.

Hi Jonah, in answer to your question, I wish. I have thought about it many times but never took the plunge to put out the big bucks on that set.
