It's like Erwin said: what he did and went through would only have been for nothing if his friends didn't give it meaning. And they did...more or less. I guess by extension, you as the viewer also need to be able to have given it all meaning. Not my favourite ending, nor what I was looking for, and I don't think it was up to the high standard set by the rest of the show. But it was okay enough for me, and I'm fine with that.
