This is my home built Super 8 / Regular 8 scanner. Almost everything is 3D printed. Controlled by arduino and Raspberry Pi and stepper motors. New improved version of T-Scann8 2021 • T-Scann - 8 Super/Regu...
Now THIS is the BEST DIY digitizer I've seen! The build has the things that are a must. The rubber pinch rollers to move the film instead of toothed sprocket IS A MUST! Excellent! The RGB light source is also a must. This is the only one I've seen that implemented that. So well done!
Best followers today, October 16, it's been 1 year since I published my video on my super 8 / regular 8 scanner. Now this project has been viewed 3895 times and 49 followers. This project started in May 2015 with me wanting to build a scanner with a USB microscope camera worked but did not work well, it took a long time before I came to the conclusion that Rasbberry PI computer and its camera was the best solution. During the trip, I learned both Arduino programming and CAD for 3D printers. Now I have updated the film gate, and changed from red laser to blue LED to detect the film perforation. Will also improve film feed. As well as software control scanning. Sorry it took so such a long time, hope to publish a new video before New Year. Then I will make a project page and tell you about how you build your own scanner with 3d files and everything. / Torulf Holmström Stockholm Sweden
Thank you for the update. I have been looking for such a project for a long, long time. I tried building one myself a few times, but i got stuck at film perforation detection and the light source. Hopefully you will be able to find time to create a project page with the files, so I and others can digitize my box of old super 8 movies and relive some lost memories.
Helt otroligt !!!
That's actually pretty good quality for that little camera module! There's now a high quality 12 megapixel module available for the Raspberry PI, which would probably give amazing results for this.
Wow. amazing work, Looking forward to seeing your 3D Files, ect. You should actually sell this, even if you make the components/3D prints open source and sharable.
This looks awesome! I've been looking to build something like this. Can't wait to see what improvements you make. And hopefully provide the designs for this! Or even offer builds for sale!
Nice Project! With this approach you could scan your 15meters super 8 films in 1 hour and 30 minutes every single frame is long 4.01mm, divide 15000mm by 4.01mm and you obtain about 3740 frames you can scan it in a framerate of 41 frames per minute, so dividing 3740 frames by 41 and you obtain 1hour and 30 minutes not bad at all! :) I think this is the best project that I found on youtube. That approach is not bad at all!
Thanks! Has actually increased the scanner speed a bit more, 64 images per minute. When I have made some other changes, I will make a new video on my scanner.
-Exquisitely made scanner and very educational vid! Tip: There are some polymer coated wheels available for cine dust extraction, instead of your DIY electrical tape version. Keep up the good work and keep'em vids coming, man! Cheers, DIYSwede
Fantastic work! I’m building something very similar but I was having issues with the take up reel. I’m going to do what you have done which is a great idea.
These are some really good results. A few simple improvements to this might be using a high quality reference light source, and a different camera module with a higher native resolution. the microscope lens is a solid idea though.
Hi Torulf. Excellent project. You seem to have nailed most problems. While you are improving and (Hopefully) documenting your telecine, is there anyway you could share more photos/videos of the whole assembly? Many thanks and keep-up the good work!
Hej Torulf, fint bygge, otroligt stabil bild! Tack!
Hej Johan tack!
That is great. Do you have the plans for building to give to us (especially me!) because I have no idea how to program that. I recently found all my films again in storage and now I want to scan most of them. Great project. Great footage. Thank you for sharing.
Have you named your USB stick or hard drive to "SMALFILM"? (if you haven't changed the code) then type in "Sweden2018" for example in the user interface.
I am working on the same project. However I never intend to reverse the direction of bend as all scanners , including yours do. With a very old film it could break. I will also not use a claw transport but a large sprocket wheel so the transport load is spread over many frames. The frame transport will also not be sudden but a slow acceleration and deceleration
Nice design, have you tried scanning any negative stock using this? Wondering how well the colours came through for inversion? The reason I ask about the colours is because I have a wolverine and I tend to struggle with getting enough blue information through to do a good inversion of the colours.
Have not tried to scan neg film, think it would work and is no problem to turn the image into pos film

Wonderful work! Did you have any plans to share your build? Especial the software part (e.g. via GitHub). Personally i plan/build a very similar scanner. My plan is to use a Ardoino motor-shield with GRBL and an Raspi with OpenCV.
For the V2 camera and the update with the HQ camera, I use this www.ebay.com/itm/174730432144?hash=item28aebece90:g:AAEAAOSwLipgdZNo Upcoming new construction if you build a new one, I will use this with the HQ camera shop.pimoroni.com/products/microscope-lens-0-12-1-8x
I really like what you have achieved here Torulf, can you please tell me the costing for everything, look forward to seeing the build page. All the best.
@@tscann8 Wow! Excellent that works out at around £172.00 GB pounds here, I use the Wolverine 720p film scanner, your build really caught my eye, I really hope that you may offer to sell versions of this as I would consider commissioning you to build one for me.
Do not know if I can use the lens I have now, then there will be a change in distance from the film plant to the lens. So have not investigated how much it affects purely mechanically. Right now I am changing laser detection and film gate, then I will think about a possible better camera
@@tscann8 Are you referring to the newer video? Yes I just had a look. Seems the camera is still a v2 though or is the title and image wrong in the video? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Re8KhnXMi3U.html
Hi, First, congratulation for that ! This is exactly what I want to make. Do you have the stl files of the plastic pieces ? Do you have publish your work on a website ? Github ? Thanks for your shares :-)
Hi Thanks! I'm in the process of redesigning the movie gate including laser sensing, so not ready to share yet has not distributed any stl or building description yet
(Google Traduttore) Hi do not sell, in the future I will publish construction description on it. Is improving laser detection of film perforation.
No, I'm in the process of redesigning the movie gate including laser sensing, so not ready to share yet has not distributed any stl or building description yet
@@ThePhilippineconnect It will be developed more, it will probably be a lot of work to make a commercial product and there are competitors Wolverine 8mm and Super 8 for example.
@@tscann8 Wolverine pro is not any good. You want to make a machine ? Tobin TVT-8 Dual 8MM sprocket less machine. The Best. .ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GWKyd67P2HI.html
