When you touched down the quilt block #2 before glueing that edge, it looked like you were putting the wrong side up. Then you pull it towards you and literally take full control of that big block and place wrong sides together. Then you picked up the other edge, and lay it right sides together at the seam, and it touches down on your glue.....Im telling you... it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. The control of blocks that big is very precarious, at best. THEN you continue glueing and laying the whole row down in about 15 inches of space and walk the whole row over to the machine. I was so excited. My sewing room isnt vast and this space saver technique is absolutely wonderful. Explaining that each row only has three seams sounds so do-able. It helped also that you choose not to keep talking while the machine is sewing, which, to me, is very stressful. Very easy to follow your teaching and tricks. I am a new subscriber, but I printed a pattern of yours back several years ago of a great IPad, phone stand. When I recognized your name on the pattern after watching this video, it all came back to me. Oh yeah, this is the lady I really liked way back when I was looking for help as a beginner tryIng to do my first attempts at sewing in years. Have a great day. Thank you so much.

YAY!!! I just finished the top of my quilt, with your help! I am making my grand daughter a graduation gift of soccer memorabilia... all the teams she's been on, the tournaments she's been to... saved all her T-shirts, sweatshirts and jerseys... I had NO clue how I was going to do this... I can't tell you how delighted I was to learn your tips of gluing and ironing the seams going different directions! You made a difficult task very easy... I appreciate you!

I just bought a new sewing machine with intentions of making a t shirt quilt out of my dads shirts. He's not with us anymore and I thought this would be a good way to preserve his fave t's instead of letting them go to waste . Great tutorial(s) and great teacher; I have made t-shirt quilts in the past and one thing I found is that when you cut the blocks you need to be aware of seam allowance. An example is your "basket case" block (a large logo) where the lettering on top and bottom gets in the seam allowance. I find I may have to make choices and sacrifice one area to preserve another (i.e. more room at top of basket case to preserve the name and sacrifice whatever the bottom line is).

I’m going through your series and thank you for all your effort in sharing your skills! I have been saving tshirts for a few years now and probably have more than I need for one quilt. I want to keep them throw size because of the weight when laundering. Have you ever had the fusible backing separate from the block after use and laundering? For the person who had issues after washing a quilt and others who have large or heavy quilts: Tips on cleaning quilts (I have been doing this for years) my machine is old fashioned agitator style with manual features so I put the quilt in the machine, fill and add Orvus while filling. I will let it agitate on gentle just enough to distribute the weight, mix the soap and water and see if I need to add more water. Then I push Stop and let it soak. After soaking for whatever time it needs, I start it up and let it agitate a minute or so then turn the dial to spin only and let it drain out and spin. To rinse, I refill it with water and no soap and repeat...soak, spin, no agitation cycle. My machine has an extended spin cycle so I use that. If your machine doesn’t, just reset to spin a second time. This is basically using your washer manually as if it were a big soaking tub with a spin cycle. I don’t know if HE washers have cycles that can be interrupted and advanced. I have only used standard center agitator machines. (But I am keeping an eye out for a ringer washer!) Thanks again!

Great information about washing quilts! Thank you for sharing! I've not had any issues with my interfacing separating from the back side of the t-shirt after my quilt is all quilted and finished. Maybe because I do an all over, edge to edge quilting like a meandering. I'd be interested to know if this is an issue that many quilters who have made t-shirt quilts have to deal with.

+Lynne S. Not a such thing as silly questions :) we made a design wall with insulation board from Lowe's, and I covered it with quilt batting. The stabilizer and weight of the t-shirt doesn't allow the block to stick up there on it's own, so I just use pins to hold them up there. Works great!!

Jadira R without being right there, it's hard saying. What I would do first is take a measure tape/ruler, and measure distance of needle and the edge of your presser foot. Hi Lisa, I just finished my 1st quilt and after washing it a few of my seams came out. :-( Do you think my thread wasn't strong enough? I used a Polyester Thread. I'm not sure of the weight but the spool end has 250 m on it.
@TheQuiltmakerHomestead
@TheQuiltmakerHomestead 5 лет назад
this could happen for a couple of reasons. First, what measurement seam allowance did you do? If it was a good 1/4" then we can probably rule that out. If it was less then that, it could be the problem. Second, a cheaper thread does sometimes break, especially under the weight of the quilt and in washing a drying. I use poly thread as well and most of the time no issues. The darker thread I've noticed is more prone to issues. Sometimes the issue could be the fabric used to make up the quilt top. Certain thinner fabrics I've seen do this. Also, how was the quilt quilted. If there was minimal quilting, then the weight of the quilt when it was wet could have pulled at your seams. If washing the quilt in a machine, I'd prefer that it doesn't have the center agitator, that helps. If your machine does, then it may be best to wash this quilt in the tub by hand in the future. These are just some of the things I've noticed as I've made quilts. I'm hoping maybe some others will chime in as well with their experiences. Sorry this happened to you, I know that can be very disheartening after all of your hard work! Time to break out some needle and thread, you can certainly fix it and make it blend in I would think :)

@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead Since it was my 1st quilt I do remember a few seam allowances may have been less due to my strips not being straight (that was one of the major things I learned in this practice quilt). I tied the quilt so I bet the weight of the quilt aided in this. Also, I don't have the center agitator but my washer gets a little crazy and it did get off balance during the wash so that probably didn't help. I will work on fixing it with a ladder stitch, is that what you recommend? Thank you so much for your help, I honestly couldn't have finished this project without your videos! :-)

thank you so much Melissa :) I'm so horrible at hand sewing but yes, I'd do the ladder stitch to close up any gaps in the seams on the front......although my ladder stitch doesn't much look like a ladder stitch hahaa...I need to practice! Because you tied the quilt...I'd go in and tie it a bunch more, it'll help a lot. It's your first quilt, don't be hard on yourself :) One day you'll look back and see how much you've learned!

what about scrapbooking glue guns, could you use that in place of the glue?

I think I'd stay away from those types of glue which may be harder on your sewing machines and needles :)

@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead thank you for your speedy reply. I have never made a quilt but a co worker of my daughters husband passed and we made them memory pillows and now they want lap quilts for their children. So going to be learning as I go here, but you are full of great tips.

I can't tell from the video if you are using steam or no steam when you're ironing. Does it matter which? Both at this point and after you've washed it, before giving it to someone..

Hi Jennifer :) I use steam when pressing the interfacing to the backside of the shirts, if using my iron. It really helps it to bond to the shirt. When pressing my seams, I do use a bit of steam...however....alot of quilters do not like putting water in their iron hahaha. I do :) After the quilt is finished and washed, there's really no reason to press it at that point.

Lisa, where is video 4? I have finished putting it all together . I now need instructions on how much backing to buy and instructions on sewing it to the quilt. Thank you so much for your instructions, I can’t wait to show you my finished product. Veronica ( Charlottesville, Va.)

Great tutorial as always. Would you believe I’m still sick. Thought I just had the flu, but ended up in the ER. Went to my doctor and he sent me straight to the hospital. Next up is to see a neurologist. I have an infection somewhere that they cannot find. I will definitely be late to the T-shirt quilt fun, but I will still do it when I feel better.

Lisa Capen Quilts I’m sorry that your mother in law has to deal with the evil body invaders too. They are smart little boogers and hard to treat. It took me about a year to find a doctor that knew how to find it and treat it. Here in the Midwest ( St. Louis area) doctors do not think it’s prevalent and so they are just uneducated. I drive 3hrs away to see my Lyme doctor. I’m very interested in hearing what your mom in laws treatment plan is. If it’s anything like mine the protocols change quite frequently. If she is interested in sharing any info with me she can email me at wackyjacky1276@hotmail.com

Do you glue baste on every single quilt? I learned to glue baste when I first started quilting and stopped due to it being time consuming. However, I want to challenge myself to make a contest quality quilt. I think glue basting will help with keeping points and such accurate. Thus, producing a better quilt top. I'm rambling to say, I'm asking because I'm hoping you'll say no. LOL! But I think you'll say yes--and I've just answered my own question. LOL! :)

@TheQuiltmakerHomestead
@TheQuiltmakerHomestead 6 лет назад
I always hesitate giving pricing help, as it varies from person to person, region to region, and skill level to skill level. So many factors to consider when pricing, most importantly: time and cost of materials. You stated you were thinking of starting a business? Then you'll also have to consider those costs as well :) For some, it may be easier to determine a set hourly wage you'd like to make and keep track of your time while making the quilt. I don't think most people realize the cost involved in making a quilt, and how fast the materials add up. So a lot of times I quote prices and don't hear back from many.
