In this video we make wire grab handles to replace the kit ones, use plastic putty for weld seams on our handles, assemble the external fuel tanks, and assemble and mount the PE shovel for our WWII T34/85 medium tank by Tamiya in 1/35 scale.
The T34/85 was the up-gunned version of the T34/76 that first saw front line service in 1942 against German forces. Production began in January or 1944 to counter the German Tigers and Panther tanks. The major improvements were the 85mm main gun and a new 3-man turret compared to it's predecessor with the 76mm gun and a 2-man turret.

Great progress Johnny, I love the Grab Handles and the Shovel Mount, fiddly but well worth the effort.

Thanks for this video - some clever ideas that I will use when replacing the plastic grab handles that are not only fragile to clean and to handle, but difficult to glue without holes. Pity you don't give more information on the wire you used. Jewellers use 'dead soft' and 'half hard' copper wire. I suppose you use the latter - keeps shape better, but still OK for bending.

Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. I'm not well versed in jewelers wire, but the wire I used is quite stiff and holds its shape very well. Take care and have a great weekend my friend. Johnny

I recently completed an upgrade & reconditioning of a 1/32 M36 Jackson I built in the '70's. Didn't sand the wire grab handles like you did & the paint is flaking off already.

Sorry to hear about the paint flaking off, metal parts have to have a metal primer or lightly sanded to give a little "grip" for the paint to stick to. Thanks for watching and for subscribing, I really appreciate it my friend. Model on! Johnny

thanks this helps with the T 34 I'm building. Can you tell me what size the wire is that you use?
@hillbillymodeling

Hi there Mr Golden V, I use 18-gauge automotive wire with the insulation stripped off and I use 5 strands of the wire to twist up into the tow cables, hope this helps. Johnny

How do you cut the wood pieces to width? Are you using a table saw? Thank you for sharing your technique to fashion the grab handles. I am going to use it in a future build!

Hi Weld24, the answer is yes, I did use a table saw to cut my wooden strips. But, you can do it with a small hand saw as well and block sand it to fine tune the width. Thanks so much for your question and for giving my build a look, greatly appreciated. Take care and model on my friend! Johnny

Hi Johnny, I wish I'd seen the grab handle technique earlier. I had done a Walker Bulldog and it has grab handles galore. Drove me nuts! Thanks for the tips. I have yet to get serious with PE but, I might need therapy after fiddling with it. Haha Once again Thank you for showing us your style with detailing.

Hi Mikey V, lucky for me, all of the grab handles on the T343/85 are the same length, that way we only need one jig for bending, lol. If it was only one or two handles I would have done them by eye, but for multiple handles it just makes sense to me to have a jig. Thanks for watching my friend, take care and see you in the next one! Johnny
