I'm installing T8 Mains LED lights in my new workshop and while doing so, one of the lights broke so I decided to tear it open and show you how it operates.
The light is a T8 style LED tube that operates directly of mains voltage. It is cheap and provides very good light output. The light teardown will show you the principles of operation so you can have better understanding.

This was exactly what I was looking for, schematics and everything, great video! You have to start breaking more stuff! ;)

Hahahaha, well I have mixed feeling about that... On one hand, breaking stuff seems like a waste of resources but that is also a great learning opportunity. I'm glad you liked it and thanks for watching!

As a nerd obsessed with plasma, I will always prefer fluorescent lamps over LEDs.
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, I get that. Maybe one day we invent some plasma LEDs? 🤔

@@TasteTheCodeSome LED filament bulbs are filled with helium to conduct the heat away from the LEDs and can be used as plasma lamps with a Tesla coil.

What?!?!?!? That's cool! I've never heard of them before. I really want to built a Tesla coil to play with but I'm afraid that I'll mess up some of my equipment.

Hello Bill, thank you for this informative video. what is the voltage needed to power this light bar?
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 4 года назад
The original light with the driver installed works on 220V AC. The LED bar only is made out of 42 groups of three LEDs in parallel and although I haven't measured their voltage, based on the 3.3V forward voltage of a white LED, it should be somewhere around 130V for the bar only.

So switch mode power supplies are not constant current drivers. Thanks, I almost made an error in ordering one.

Nope they are not!

Could you do a tutorial for how to connect it to a power supply? the led i have the glass is broken but i want to reuse it
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 2 года назад
Just provide power to the input on the board. Make sure to identify which wires connect to the ends and in what way. Some LEDs are powered with live and neutral from differen sides and some from the same side.
@jellyacecream
@jellyacecream 2 года назад
@@TasteTheCode i managed to see that one end is neutral and the other is live, its an 18w 96led strip, can i just connect it directly to a 12v power adapter
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 2 года назад
No. It needs to be powered from mains as those LEDs are in series and 12v won't do anything.

@@TasteTheCode ok go it, the wire coming from the led strip are quite thin, how to i connect them safely to a thicker wire or a normal one? I dont want to connect to a non shunted tomstone
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 2 года назад
I guess you can solder new thicker ones to the board.

I have a T8 lamp. I”d like to know if I can cut the LED strip half length.
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 3 года назад
Only if there are multiple parallel circuits connecting there. Not all lights have them.

Raising or lowering resistor drop the current?
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 8 месяцев назад
Usually when there are two resistors in parallel, removing one lowers the current. So rising the resistance, drops the current.

Can we convert the adapter to 12v output constant voltage
@TasteTheCode

No, this one is for constant current only.

I have quite a lot of t8 led tubes can they be run off 12 volts battery power no inverter can you help. Greg
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 4 года назад
It depends on their internal wiring. These tubes are usually wired in series so they run on higher voltages. However, if they are tubes that run on mains voltage then there is no way to rewire them without actually breaking the outer glass.

@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode Год назад
This is different. This entire strip can't be cut.
@allanternaverde
@allanternaverde 3 года назад
any change the led strip would be cutted and re-wired without damage?
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 3 года назад
I don't think so. The strip is aluminum backed so just soldering to it will be a pain as it will suck all of the heat.

How to power it with usb
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 2 года назад
This type can't be powered from USB as the LEDs are wired in series and require high voltage.

The tube light has pins on both ends where you supply live and neutral.

Hey brother i want to ask ..can i shorten the led t8 from 120 cm to 90 cm?, because my old aquarium light is broken. My aquarium is a 302 liter boyu which has a neon type lamp with a length of 90 cm, but I am having trouble finding a t8 lamp of that size because it is not common. so can it be shortened
@TasteTheCode
@TasteTheCode 3 года назад
Not really, but it all depends on the light. On mine, the LEDs are arranged in such a way that they are all in series. Plus, the other glass is very thing and most likely it will break if you try to disassemble it. In your case, I will suggest that you replace the whole thing with LED strip.
