Atlantic writer Ta-Nehisi Coates has always been curious. “When I was a kid, I pretty much was interested in the same things I'm interested in now: Why does the world look like the world looks?” he explains in this short animation. Coates describes struggling in school and being terrified of journalism at the start of his career. Eventually, with the help of a few key mentors along the way, he learned to craft stories with vision and intention. “Journalism has taught me that I'm a lot tougher than I thought I was,” he admits. “Writing is hard but it is joyous.”

"So much of the pain is what's in your head." Always, I'm always surprised by how much worse something is in my head than when I confront it. Not sometimes. Always. I'm 41 pages into my 2nd reading of Water Dancer. I love this book! #TaNehisiCoates

The real art of journalism has slowly lost its value in the modern society, only to be replaced by "quick-fix" news, which is specifically fabricated to cater to an individual's immediate need of information, without adding anything substantial to one's knowledge base. When the entire system modifies itself, those working with it only have to keep up with the times or fall as prey to the volatile "dynamic" society. I really don't blame any of the journalists, but it takes real courage to dig up stories which affect people and their lives. It's a slowly endangering guild, and it needs to be rescued.

Question: why did Mr Coates say he felt nothing while watching people jump out of the world trade towers during 9/11 attack? You may not have the right answer but an answer of any kind would be nice. Just to clear up Mr Coates obvious disdain for New Yorkers.

You’d have to read his book “Between the world & me” . In his book he details his childhood, adult life, and also the parallels of his life and childhood to his own sons life. Much of Ta-nehesi’s life (and many black people’s life) the police are not there to protect and serve you, in fact they are an active danger that we learn to avoid, (I myself have had guns pulled on me 3x by police even tho I have never been to jail, arrested or have anything on my record besides traffic violations such as speeding or rolling past a stop sign) the 9/11 attack occurs shortly after Coates’ dear friend is murdered by a policeman, no one cared, no one was charged, and they spent more time trying to investigate his friend (who by all accounts was an honor student at Howard, had Ivy League offers, Christian kid, who had just a daughter and got engaged) to find dirt on him than to serve justice to the family who had just lost their pride and joy in Coates’ friend. Ta-nehesi has admitted in past speeches that this left him cold and bitter, why should he care that those lives were lost when no one cared when his friend’s life was taken and so many others either family or neighbors also had their life taken ? What separated those officers from the ones who had gunned down unarmed people in his community? He’s admitted now that he’s older, the bitterness is no longer as prevalent and he doesn’t feel that way but he is human… which is to feel, to have emotions- joy, anger, sadness, peace, bitterness etc. this can upset you or you can have empathy for his losses… I honestly don’t think he cares, he’s often said his job is to write the world as he sees it and what ever happens afterwards is up to Us, but hope this provides some clarity on why he wrote that and felt that way.

@@stephenmartin4207 sounds like excuses, honestly. Everyone has hardship in their life. We all get to choose how we deal with trials. I don't agree with how he has chose to deal with his trials. I have had the cops pull on me twice and I've never been arrested. I also understand why they pulled on me...their safety. I don't blame them. There are pieces of shit in any walk of life. Some humans are terrible. I believe Mr Coates is one of the bad ones.
