Hi guys!
As always, thank you so much for your support!
I wanted to upload at least one video every week but things came up and it's been already 4 weeks since the last video.
In the meantime, subscribers reached 1k and I am so grateful for everyone who spends time to watch my video and I hope they somehow helped you to improve and achieve what you want to achieve to bring a joy and accomplishment to your life.
This video is about the difference between hitting and driving.
This concept is not too complicated but many players struggle to understand and execute it correctly.
As you probably know by now, I always emphasize efficiency and consistency. Being able to drive the ball in table tennis(any racket sports) is the key for both efficiency and consistency.
Theoretically, when you drive the ball, you ACCELERATE through the contact thus you squeeze the rubber to the maximum potential to get most grip and rebound.
When you hit the ball, you DECELERATE through the contact.
The speed of swing at/throughout the contact is the amount of energy you transfer to the ball. So if you decelerate as you swing (slow speed of swing), then you work hard for less energy transfer - inefficiency.
And most of the time, this happens because you calculated the swing speed and when to start your swing wrong.
The longer you wait, the faster you can swing. The earlier you start to swing, the slower you have to swing to contact the ball at the right contact point(at the same contact point).
I have many more concepts that I hope to share but since the time is limited and I want to answer your questions asap, I will have just two more videos after this one before I get to talk about actual techniques - forehand loop for underspin/topsipn, backhand loop for underspin/topspin, backhand punch, high ball smash, service.
I could easily go into the techniques right away but understanding few concepts will really help you to think on your own to solve the problems.
My two next videos will be about
- The correlation between spin and speed
- How to understand your stroke - the correlation between paddle's position vs the ball's position / angle of the paddle / swing direction / speed of the swing.
And special thanks to MALONGFANMADE Channel for the Chinese professional players training videos.

The concept of always accelerating through contact makes a lot of sense. Sometimes when I loop underspin or forehand flick I think I chicken out a bit and don't go all out, but then I don't get the "pick up" and its like the ball slips through. But as I interpret what you're saying its about accelerating smoothly through contact. So then if I wanted to do a controlled slower loop it might work better if I still accel through to get the stick/carry even though the total velocity of my swing might be lower.

I have had a discussion in my club about the backhand swing. This is because the trainer and the players seem to like to have this driving movement that start at approximately 90 degree angle and then fan out from there, but the slow motion videos of top level players show that they hit the backhand in this whipping motion where the wrist is bent way below 90 degrees to start with. Maybe this method is only for advanced players that master the slow drive through the ball. Take a look for yourself on how fan zhendong hits the quick backhand.
@RobertoCostas
@RobertoCostas 2 года назад
I always tell the players I coach not to hit the ball, but to accompany it. It's more efficient in terms of speed and spin, you have more control on speed and direction and it's less prone to injures caused by abruptly stopping the racket.

I feel like we all miss better terms for communication when we talk about drive vs top spin, etc. .... I think the distinction should only be with spin and speed. If no spin then flat. Correct me if I'm wrong but to me, a drive has no spin or minimal spin. Anything that has spin then is a variation of top spin, push, or side spin, or combination. The speed will only increase the velocity of the ball (in drive or no spin) or velocity of spin (in spin varieties). Does that make sense?
@roadtopro3038
@roadtopro3038 Год назад
I am on the same page as you. My definition of forehand drive is to hit the ball long and low with minimum speed and minimum topspin. I have my own terms and definitions that actually help people understand better. One thing I am stuck is the terminology for underspin technique which we call push or chop or slice

I seem to recall seeing in a video of an older chinese coach in China seeming to correct a student. He seemed to me to be teaching the student to hit the ball instead of drive. Quick impact but sudden stopping at contact point.
@roadtopro3038
@roadtopro3038 2 года назад
It’s all about the swing speed at the contact point. It’s not so much about stopping but it’s to use the swing like whip then shorten the after swing then it looks like it’s stopping. When you use the body to whip the ball, you can reach higher swing speed more consistently.
@rcarioca
@rcarioca 2 года назад
@@roadtopro3038 ok A whip action has a very short follow through at contact. But a drive seems to have a much longer follow through after contact. There seems to be no whip action for a drive ?
@roadtopro3038
@roadtopro3038 2 года назад
@@rcarioca whipping happens by the order of movements that are made from the body, legs-core-upperbody-arm- paddle to reach more efficient swing speed. The concept of Driving is acceleration of the paddle throughout the contact. So drive is also a small whipping motion if you lead the stroke by body and relax on arm/do it properly.

In forehand drive , there will also be ellipse formation. i mean when we finish the forward motion we stop out hand some below to eye level and from there we will be bring down out paddle to original position but will same speed as we started prior to hitting the ball and will make the ellipse or return movement can have different speed based on return ball from opponent side. Please guide this aspect i mean where to finish the forward motion and how to return back and what time we start return movement or we will stop the bat at eye level or not stop the bat eye level all those stuff please

if we are hitting the ball at 3 o clock position with flat bat angle (90dege paddle to ground) and doing follow through then also it will called drive (carry) am i right or not. in forehand smash, we hit the ball will flat bat angle and there also forward motion is being done whether that is called is called Hit i.e forehand smash is called Hit or Hit is entirely different thing and in forehand drive or smash on in loop one basic common thing is drive.
@rudycramer225

Whenever i try and loop they mostly go out. I try and brush the ball with a closed bat and forward motion. I notice in this video that the bat doesn't need to be as closed approaching the ball, as it naturally closes as you make the stroke. Am I right. This video is telling me that my bat is too closed before I even hit it. I sort of have a closed bat and try and lift it. If this counds confused, it's because I am.
@CalvinAytch
@CalvinAytch 2 года назад
You don't need to be very closed when looping and, in fact, it's actually making it harder for you to contact the ball effectively. Think what happens to the face of your rubber when you close your paddle. The portion of the rubber's face that is exposed to the ball decreases. That means that your contact must be very exacting to get good rubber contact as well as making it very easy to shank the ball on the edge of the paddle if you've misread the trajectory slightly. I believe this misconception comes from a beginner level of thinking where people associate closing down the paddle with topspin. In reality, not only does this make it harder to contact the ball effectively, but it also means that you're always getting a very thin or weak contact with the rubber and little sponge engagement. What you need to do is open the paddle more to get solid contact. If you're going out then, you need to generate more spin to get the ball to land in the table. At first you can reduce power to get this feeling of spin generation, but you'll eventually find that you can actually hit very hard with a more open face AS LONG AS you're generating the required amount of spin to keep it on the table. In summary, try opening your paddle more. You can close moderately, but if you're passing 45 degrees of rotation to close your paddle, you're too closed to start with.
@rudycramer225
@rudycramer225 2 года назад
@@CalvinAytch Thanks mate! I have done EXACTLY what you have said lately and have improved a lot in this area. I'm having trouble hitting high spinny loops, as now I am hitting flatter harder ones. But a lot come back as blocks and I think the odd spinny loop will make people think a bit more when engaging with one of these. I know I do.

Hitting the ball early is important , hit/drive it early as possible and the opponent gets pressure and less time. All rules are too be broken , sometimes !!
@roadtopro3038
@roadtopro3038 3 года назад
Very good point! Once you learn how to drive and have good feeling of “driving” the ball, it will be good to practice to take it early to not only take away partner’s time but also to make your shot efficient because the ball has more energy and you can spend less energy for same or even better quality ball. This way, your swing also becomes compact, because the ball is going back and forth faster thus you need to make your swing more efficient(smaller) due to less time. Then it becomes all about timing and rhythm! Thanks!!

Try to fix step by step by repeating. Have one person feed/serve to your eyes height(relatively high) and try forehand smash. If it goes to net, there are few things you can assume - closed angle or too far from the ball or swinging too much down or starting the swing too higher than the contact point. and if it goes out it’s the other way around. Hopefully, your forehand becomes natural just like your backhand!

I often see videos from China in which the students stand on the side of the table and continually drive balls over the net. Can you explain the reason for standing on the side of the table? I never see this drill being done here. I do this sometimes when I use the robot; after picking the balls up, I will transfer them to a bucket rather than directly to the robot. I then drive the balls one by one. My assumption is that standing on the side of the table effects body angle and ball contact time, but I don't fully understand.

Do you have an instructional video on how to do this correctly? I would like to learn how feed for multi-ball drills. Hi Coach, just confused as to why you are telling us to carry the ball on the way down rather than at top of the bounce. Is this an exception and all other shots (except short push) is at top of the bounce. Also, I thought the proper way to counter/carry was to keep the face of the bat vertical and play through straight rather than tilted back and kind of lifting the ball with your blade going from a lower position to a slightly higher position. Hope I’m making sense with my question, thanks.
@roadtopro3038
@roadtopro3038 3 года назад
Yes of course! Very good question. When you are rallying, the ball comes from the other side, so it has force coming towards you. However when you are alone and self practicing, unless you have a robot or wall it’s hard to do that. So the reason why to wait is first to create a very small force that comes towards your paddle using gravity. (To feel how to use the balls energy) Second you can feel better how the ball rolls on the rubber. When you do the self practice and catch at the top, both open angle and closed angle work. So it doesn’t allow you to learn the angle. When I say carry means to have the ball dwell more so I would assume it’s different from countering. There isn’t specific “right” angle to perform a stroke since a lot of things are correlated and affect each other. You don’t do the exact same swing in the rally as you do in the self practice as I have written in the bottom to explain. You need to adjust but you can definitely feel what it feels like to drive with this exercise and if you can feel it, you can apply to the actual rally. I hope these explained your question:))) thanks!!!
@pmc5356
@pmc5356 3 года назад
@@roadtopro3038 Thanks for the fast response. I think I misunderstood, so you only wait to hit the ball on the way down if you’re dropping the ball to yourself. If you are using a robot you can hit at the top of the bounce when practicing carrying. Thanks again, love your videos 👍
