Wow! I just finished a training course for Tableau in Udemy and I feel puzzled! As you must have guessed I'm new to all of that but aiming for a career in BI. Your walkthrough guide puts everything in its right place and I was wondering whether you'd like to have a course covering everything about what a Data Analyst will need regarding Tableau in 2022. There's a good chance you've already done that in you're previous videos and I'll try to find out (I'm new here :P), but your way is a lot inspiring and to the point! I literally just started looking into Tableau TODAY and I got overwhelmed with all the possible learning tracks and having no idea where to start. Thank you so much for this video Tim! That really was a lot of info and I will have to watch it again to really absorb all of it and choose my next steps :) I work in IT, used to be a java developer but I had too many soft skills and not enough technical skills to keep up in the insanely complex environment we have at my employer (a worldwide operating wholesale bank). Resulting in a burn out I will probably never fully recover from. This year I want to learn to develop new dashboards and do maintenance on existing ones (built by the team I will be working in), using Tableau Desktop. I am now trying to figure out which learning path I should take - mostly depending on what is needed in the team so I need some answers from them - and whether I need a separate Tableau license (started the free Desktop two-week trial license today) for the stuff I need or want to learn. Getting to learn and appreciate the licensing system and grasping the differences between Server, Online and Desktop is a whole study in an of itself My favorite color is green, green and green :)

First of all, congratulations! your material is so clear and useful, as a viewer of your channel and part of the community, we see your growth so.... congratulations! . Initially I worked as a tableau analyst, then I specialized to improve my dashboards using UX/UI heuristics. Now in another step of my career I am implementing Tableau Server so...more Server stuff or Server tips, etc could be really good. My favorite color is classic black. Have a great day!

I assume you run an on premise server rather than tableau online. What sort of things along the journey are you trying to build up? I am studying for the Desktop Specialist certification now, and along with some combined Python project work hopefully the Data Analyst certification not too far after. Orange has always been my favorite. My background is military leadership so there isn't much of a "industry" that I fit into. My question would -"How do I leverage knowledge of this platform to search for leadership roles, or should I looking at different roles?" Hi Tim! Appreciate the video! I started a role working in IT for an IT Consulting company and they support a client that has their own dev team. The client wants me to work in tableau to make dashboards so they can view their ticket data and progress. It’s the explorer web version of tableau and I’m hoping to learn to navigate it well. Thanks for the long video. I gained a lot from watching it. Really helped me put things into perspective--I had never thought about the different roles people have in Tableau. I'm a Research Analyst and our organization just got Tableau desktop this past year, so the learning is very recent for me. I am hoping to continue to gain the skills to be a user and builder (for others), but also would like to build for myself, to grow my skills personally. I think a key soft skill you mentioned is definitely the communication piece and describing what you know, which helps to identify gaps in knowledge. Favorite color is blue!

Hi Tim 🦋 thank you. I'm trying to setup Tableau server for work. Everyone uses mac at this place and the T Servers are on Linux. Until starting here 3 years ago, I was a windows person. I need to figure out how to get a second node setup for the backgrounders. For entry level job, they ask basic questions and if you know SQL, it gives preference, yes there might be questions from SQL as well. If you have attempted any interviews, write down the questions (Tableau, SQL), and prepare them well. Just Keep learning. Since you are here, I believe you follow Tim already and I hope you watch his videos because it will definitely help you to clear so many doubts. And don't worry, you will get the job, just keep doing your bit. The drill is to learn, improve and never lose hope. I wish you all the best:)

Wow, brilliant video! This is only the 2nd of yours I've seen, but I'll definitely stick around. Thanks so much for focusing on the *_suite_* of skills, not just the technical. As for what I'm learning, I'll check out the developer guide you mentioned, which'll come in really handy to give my own development plan some clear direction. (Being new to Tableau, I'm a bit bewildered by how much there is to learn, and how many 8-hour Tableau videos there are on RU-vid!) Hmmm, what question to ask? *_What's the quickest way to reproduce an image_* (which is used to hyperlink to external resources) with its formatting, Alt text, URL etc, so we can reuse it on several dashboards in the workbook, or even in numerous workbooks? (Given that Tableau seems to outlaw Copy and Paste!) Favourite colour: *_pink._* P.S. Loved seeing your "crew" at the end :)

I'm glad that Tableau's latest version now has Copy and Paste, though it seems patchily implemented by the sound of it, and in some ways it's like we're still in 1985 or something! As it was seemingly *_just_* implemented, might be a while before we get it at work, as it can take quite some time for software to be rolled out across large enterprises, sadly.

Hi. Calculated field question. Is there a way to do something like in a calculated field: IF field in (A,B) then 10 IF field = A then 6 IF field = B then 4 When I do a case statement it works for the single value statement. But the one with IN tends to produce a value of 6 because it reads the first value instead of saying it has to be both. Any suggestions?

Great video Tim... I'm planning to get back into database and IT after around 20 years running a travel business (which is suffering thanks to you know what - thus I need some extra income). I have experience in corporate finance, database design, SQL, accounting, and know Excel well. What is your advice on best way for me to dive in and learn desktop first and then perhaps delve further? (favorite=sky blue).

Hi James, apologies for the delayed reply. Your comment escaped me yesterday when i checked in. You have alot of technical experience already so you have an advantage in that you're probably already quite familiar with the terminology and domain experience ( both in travel but also finance and database design). I would tkae this experience and charge ahead with it. Start by just getting as fluent as you can with Tableau so you know where things are. I would also recommend Sqlbelle ( another great channel bit.ly/34gffQ4 ) as she has quite a few great scenario-based videos I haven't had a chance to do myself and you will likely pick a lot of the small details of how things come together whilst leaning on your existing technical knowledge. Once there, just get religious about using tableau daily. If you did it in excel, ask if you can do it in tableau. This will start off pretty painful at the beginning but eventually, the tide will change and you'll start defaulting to Tableau. Now, this is how I would approach it, but the main takeaway here however you learn best is to lead with your strongest hand and use that to accelerate your journey as much as possible. The tools have gotten better but the theory is mostly unchanged. ps: #87ceeb isn't bad at all! nice choice.

Hello Tim! First of all, thank you for your video. You really do a great job and your videos are always very informative. I want to do the Tableau Desktop Specialist this year and also the Tableau Data Analyst. I have been working with Tableau for over 3 years but have never done a certificate. Is there a big difference between specialist and data analyst? I know you made a video about this but it would be interesting to know. I would be interested to know which certificates or trainings you can recommend (doesn't have to be only Tableau). My favorite color is red ;) Many greetings Chris (from Germany)

Hi Chris! Good question. If you've been using Tableau for 3 years id say skip the specialist. It's the easier of the 2 exams and is really intended for people really new to the journey. The data analyst is an all round exam so i would just sit that one and save your self some money along the way. The key difference is that with the analyst you need some good hands on experience as i suggest in the video. It also sets you up better for future exams if you need to go that way. That said if you'd like to build some confidence then do both and start with the specialist. Beyond Tableau, it's good to do some non Tableau Certificates as well. The Google Data Analytics Certificate is a nice option as it spans multiple tools. One final thing I'll say is certifications shouldn't be the main goal. They're good but i know many very skilled people who don't have certifications and are doing great things. The curriculum for them is just a nice way to think about learning and make sure you cover key topics. Application (using your new skills) is far more important than certification.

I know that the skill is more important than certificates, however, it is in Germany so that here certificates for the companies are very important unfortunately. The more the better, so to speak. 2022 I am starting with the desktop specialist certification what is your opinion in buying the expensive tableau given training vs finding the material on our own (being resourceful 😀) valuing saving time as main thing for me at this time. Any advise appreciated.

The training is great but as I highlight in my video it doesn't really count for anything if its not applied and often the training can give you a false sense of confidence. As an instructor I can say its a worthwhile course but only if you then spend at least 1 hour a day with tableau building something for about a month after that training to really make sure it settles in. I know many people who learn without attending the training, whilst it's harder its definitely possible. I'm working on a resource for the specialist exam which includes only freely available resource. Will do a video walking people through it when it's available.

BLUE - Great job Tim! New Subscriber. What are some suggestions in making a dashboard where “filters” are linked to an object (chart) mimicking a monthly calendar? Dataset is a list of events with details (date, time, title, etc) Also want user to click on ToolTip or field to add select event(s) to their personal calendar (.ics, etc). BLUE

Hi Tim, I have basic understanding of Tableau, I am more of a PBI immediate to advanced user, I think what confuses me is about the relatipnship in Tableau data model e.g. in PBI I often have one date table that relates to multiple fact tables where in Tableau I found it is very hard to eastablish, it seems one dim table can or only relate to one fact table, this really frustrates me a little as I am not sure what I did wrong. I am also use to use Time intelligence function in PBI to do calcs, it does not seem availiable in Tableau. I am learning Tableau through Maven Analytics, but it seems there is always information gap that does not suit my learning style. What you reckon?

There’s a few things that are different I’m going to start my power bi journey soon so maybe I’ll. e able to shed some light. The data model in tableau is fairly new and isn’t as advanced as PBI but I think you can still achieve what you need to with the skills you have. Are there specific date calculations you’re looking for?

@@TableauTim One very common one to use is YTD Calcs, I learned from someone that in Tableau to acheive YTD you have to set YTD Flag and multiply this flag to acheive YTD cacls which it does the job but with DAX it is so much easier just using a time intel function. Am I right regarding the Tableau part or nah?
