Learn how to make Pareto Chart in Tableau through this amazing tutorial!

A Pareto chart, named after Vilfredo Pareto, is a type of chart that contains both bars and a line graph, where individual values are represented in descending order by bars, and the cumulative total is represented by the line.
The left vertical axis is the frequency of occurrence, but it can alternatively represent cost or another important unit of measure. The right vertical axis is the cumulative percentage of the total number of occurrences, total cost, or the total of the particular unit of measure. Because the reasons are in decreasing order, the cumulative function is a concave function. To take the example below, to lower some late arrivals by 78%, it is sufficient to solve the first three issues.
The purpose of the Pareto chart is to highlight the most important among a (typically large) set of factors. In quality control, it often represents the most common sources of defects, the highest occurring type of defect, or the most frequent reasons for customer complaints, and so on.

Understanding how to get the "path" to show up was super helpful-it's not addressed in the Tableau "official" tutorials. Thank you!

Can the basic pareto line and 80-20 pareto line differ? I am getting a different curve.

In 80/20 case..The moment i converted my dimesnion( in my case its product name)into count distinct, the y axis which was earlier 0% to 100%, got converted to 0% to 3.5% ..

Love the video, but if you have a better example of making the Pareto Viz while analyzing the data set under the specific circumstance and making recommendation for actions. That would be perfect.

is it possible to have multiple columns pareto, instead of only one?
@FPrimeHD1618
@FPrimeHD1618 4 года назад
I have no clue why, but when doing the second Pareto chart, when I finish creating a quick table calculation for my distinct count group I lose the ability to sort my data, so I am unable to achieve the running total curve. Thoughts?

You need to sort the dimension in detail card to get proper view

Can you please let me know if we can have country names as header in columns instead of %
@loxli20xx
@loxli20xx 2 года назад
I don't know how to put country names as header instead of % in the columns, but I don't think you should do this even if it works in some approach, because the key concept of this Pareto analysis is to demonstrate the relationship of 80/20. On the other hand, if you want to keep audience's head with the actual country names which responded to the 20% population, you could simply put the country name label only in the graph of bar chart by putting the country name dimension in the Mark Card 'label'

I'm trying to follow along the tutorial but I am stuck at the 80/20 Pareto sheet. When I do the table calculations on the Country Name I don't get the smooth line I expect. Instead I see a line that has like steps in it. I think I am doing everything exactly as you so I am not sure what am I doing wrong. I am using Tableau Public 2020.4. Any ideas on what to check? Edit: Figured it out, needed to change the sort in Country Name detail to sort by that field

That did not work for me but i have the steps. How do you get it to sort by GDP per country, ascending?
@ashleygajkowski
@ashleygajkowski Год назад
@@doctort.quinlan4101 I got it to work by right clicking on the Country Name in detail, clicking sort, and then choosing sort by field. In order to get the correct curve, you have to choose descending though. Then for field name I chose Country Name and count for the aggregation.

@@ashleygajkowski After sorting the details to descending , I still have a Step line and not the normal curve is the basic pareto sheet. Please help!
@ashleygajkowski
@ashleygajkowski Год назад
@@arokodareoluwatomisin9715 are you trying to do the sorting within the table calculation window? When I try to do it that way it makes the line all crazy. You want to leave those sort order fields as "Specific Dimensions" and instead go to the Country Name pill that's on the Marks card as Detail. Right click and find sort in that menu.
