Don't judge Dread too harshly from this game: Wil was running the first of three scenarios presented in the main Dread book, "Under a Full Moon". It's an *introductory scenario* deliberately designed to be a straight-forward, rail-roading story, with the stated goals to be as easy on the Host (i.e. GM) as possible while introducing all players to the mechanics. (You're literally on a river, and the current only flows in one direction). Having run Under a Full Moon several times myself, I'll say---with respect---that Wil railroaded things a helluvalot more than I would have, likely due to time constraints. The second scenario, "Under a Metal Sky", is a Deadspace-style sci-fi horror tale, where all players are crew-members of a starship-gone-dark: Players' positions as crew-members means they have a lot of influence over the environment (i.e. the engineer has full narrative control over all mechanical systems, and can even invent them on-the-fly), requiring a lot more flexibility from the Host. Finally, the third scenario, "Under the Mask", is a Scream-style slasher story, where every player is a college student at camp, and one of them is the murderous, masked psychopath... except no one, _not even the Host_, knows who. When the Host doesn't even know who the monster is... well, needless to say, that's no railroad. Regarding the effectiveness of the Tower: It truly must be played to be appreciated. No one I have ever played Dread with has ever left the table preferring dice to the Tower when it comes to horror---and I've Hosted dozens of games, not to mention I'm "that GM" who constantly insists gamers bring their inexperienced significant-others to play. I've become a believer because I've _seen_ how effective the Tower is at _creating fear._ Pacing is a HUGE part of the Host's burden, it's true... but it's incredible how reliable the Tower is at creating fear in your players. I'm a huge Call of Cthulhu fan, I love World of Darkness... but there is simply _no_ game in existence that creates fear as effectively, as efficiently, and as reliably as Dread.

Ryan West thanks for the info :-) But as others said... can there be really a big difference in how decisive a player can be when the whole decision-making-system just has two outcomes: success or death?
@eunomiac
@eunomiac 9 лет назад
HQnama Yes, far more than this playthrough would suggest. Refusing to pull is a third option, which wasn't really explored: Contrary to how Wil did things, you absolutely cannot die unless you knock the tower over (you never "pull to live"). You might lose a limb, forcing more pulls from other players for the rest of the game as they must carry you around (or, they'll have to pull to get over their own humanity, if they want to leave you behind). Actions can often have multiple parts, requiring multiple pulls, with players deciding how much to risk (e.g. "pull to dodge the werewolf's attack, pull again to keep your balance while you do so, pull a third time to avoid panicking"---players can decide to pull or not pull in any combination, perhaps avoiding the strike, but freaking out and falling down). That's where the player's narrative control comes from---the knowledge that they cannot be killed unless they knock the tower down. (The question "what if a player never pulls?" is discussed at length in the book, and it's never really an issue---you just keep piling on the non-lethal complications, until that player is being held captive in the bad guy's lair, being slowly skinned alive... avoiding death, sure, but suffering a worse fate). All that being said, Dread is not meant to simulate the same kind of freedom that a dice-rolling system is: The mechanic is, first and foremost, designed to create fear.
@HQnama
@HQnama 9 лет назад
Ryan West aaah... that actually sounds a lot better than the slimmed down version Wil seemed to choose. In fact I already had the feeling watching it that there was something missing... e.g. the need to pull more than one block. Thank for explaining it a little better :)

Ryan West I read that first sentence and wondered what Judge Dredd had to do with this. Then I reread it and realized I'm kind of a dummy.

HQnama To expand a little, Will was a very evocative GM - but the players weren't protagonists. They let things happen to them. ***Spoiler Space*** The only plan the players ever came up with in that game amounted to "Run". None of them were the protagonists of a horror movie - or even the Final Girl. (Not even the last survivor). The closest we came was in the scene with the second flare where she ended up refusing the pull. Imagine instead she'd done something like "I reach behind me, scrablling for the flare, and light it. They're faster than us. We can't run. Then I wait for my opportunity and when the wolf gives me one I shove it down its throat." As a GM I'd have said "Four pulls. One for the flare. One to hold your nerve. One for the shove. And one to avoid being crushed by the werewolf." (The fourth can be refused - at the cost of something like a broken leg). Had that worked, it would have run the werewolf off for a while. Even werewolves don't like having flares shoved down their throats. And from experience, four-pull actions are terrifying. I don't care how good at the game that shall not be named you are. Your hand is trembling after the second pull. And everyone else's is by the third. The other example that stands out is the heroic sacrifice. More running away. A heroic sacrifice basically turns the narrative over to the player. A legitimate heroic sacrifice could have been "They've seen me. And I can't outrun them. Instead I do the one thing they aren't expecting. I charge - and spear the biggest round the waist, pulling it into the river and into the rapids. We were going to have to abandon the raft or carry it for a whole anyway as there was a large waterfall coming up. And the wolf may be far stronger than I am, but I'm on its back and holding on like grim death and trying to hold on at least until the waterfall. After which there should be two broken bodies floating downstream." That's the sort of level of control a heroic sacrifice gives you. Finally the PVP element was never explored. PVP Dread amounts to chicken. But those were relatively banal questions for the character backgrounds. One of the points of character creation is to put everyone slightly at odds and have disagreements within the group. "Pull or die" should never happen in Dread - even with a group as risk-averse as that one. "Pull or twist your ankle" is fairly common. And a twisted ankle makes you easy meat later.

That last part: I don't think that's what Wil was going for. I think it was more 'the story sounded too insane, the authorities assumed Emily was crazy, killed the others, and made up/hallucinated/imagined the were-things'. I took it as 'it all really happened, but it was too crazy for people to believe it'.

Jack Bross My question is why were they actually playing J****a? If they had thought about it they would have only taken the middle blocks. It leaves an extremely stable tower, otherwise their just trying to kill each other.
@Kiki-uu6pc
@Kiki-uu6pc 9 лет назад
J Schmidt The problem with that strategy is if the story is long enough you are going to get to the point that there is no middle block and the move will kill who ever draws it.
@JRockySchmidt
@JRockySchmidt 9 лет назад
Except that you are still building the tower, and yes you may eventually die but thats after ~26 (24) pulls at that point you might as well cause nobody has yet. Im just saying that just like in real life there are ways to prolong your death. Edit: maths 18 levels when you start which means 18 blocks to build with just the original tower. 18/3=6 which means 6 more levels which mean 2 more levels which means 24 possible pulls before someone dies.

qdHazen The overall story was incredibly cliche, the sceneries were often poorly defined, the game was pretty much railroaded at all times with the characters barely having any direct influence on the story until the very end, and by then it was defined by drawing skills and nothing else... Nope, I can't say it did anything for me. I can't say I completely digged the tower mechanic either. It build suspense even when there wasn't supposed to be any. You're sleeping? Yeap, keep building that suspense. It's an interesting way to build suspense though...

***** In follow up. My Dread story was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. At the end of 3 or 4 hours we finally killed someone and came to a good stopping point. We had six players including myself as the DM so we used a whole intact tower. Turns out my friends are VERY good at Jenga and the tower only fell when there was literally no other possibility, so I should have taken some pulls from the tower at the start of the game to make things interesting. I also should have been much more liberal with my tower pulls, it would have been nice to kill off at least one other character. I'm a newb but I decided that I would challenge myself and make one of the characters a traitor, and to his credit he/we fooled them until the big reveal. There were audible gasps. Hopefully we'll play again and we can continue the story and find out if the group will escape Wilma and her gang of canibals/people farmers. I don't think they will
@AsuraDandy

***** hm sounds like you need to get them to pull some blocks at every possibility, just like how that guy had to pull a block for literally finding a rock lol. but yeah, you'll need to do that, cause they'll have alot of choices before the tower becomes abit more unstable and more catastrophic, with a full tower, they'll pretty much have like over 20 easy chances to pass the tower test before it gets hairy.

Spoilers! If there aren't any Werewolves (who knows?) then it must have been Emily. The Guide might have been attacked by regular wolves, and they were possible stalked by a pack. With tension so high, they might have discussed the existence of Werewolves (it is possible if you're out there all alone, with things you can't explain). Afraid of having their guide turn into one and then possibly killing them, Maddox takes a rock and slams it unto the Guide's head, resulting into his death. Alice could've been so shocked and afraid of Maddox doing that, that she stumbled out of the raft, hitting her head on the rocks. Emily, being etremely afraid, believes in Werewolves, and tells herself that the stories are true. She suspects the necklace can save her and in turn kills Maddox in order to take it from them. This would explain the bodies the police found and why Emily sounds so crazy, as she truly believes Werewolves exist. She's then institutionalized for killing the others, while she's 1) traumatized 2) crazy and believes that Werewolves killed her friends. This could be a possible explanation. Another explanation is that the police simply refuse to believe in the supernatural. But the most logical explanation of all is the following: Plotholes. Bodies were found, yet they were all turned into Werewolves? What happened to them? Why does the Werewolf look at Emily all the time? (This is what SHE thinks, she could be wrong) These are just simple tricks to raise tension, make everybody a bit paranoid. Wil obviously just threw stuff at them for suspense without having a complete picture of the full story I think.

I find werewolves incredibly boring as far as horror goes, but even still this was really fun to watch, and it's great how Wil was setting the mood just with his tone and the way he narrated in general. It worked. Probably worked better than if I was watching a movie with this plotline, too (since the horror stuff had to happen in my imagination, and not just absorbed from a screen). I guess this is the beauty of RPGs like this.
@jamescollier9196

Antroid I always find that it is our own imaginations that terrify us more than any external factor ever could. The less any media portraying horror reveals, the more frightening it becomes.
@Antroid
@Antroid 9 лет назад
James Collier Yep. For me, that pretty much stays true for immersion in any kind of story, be it a book (much more immersive than a movie) or a videogame (older games with simpler graphics are much more immersive to me than newer ones with graphics closer to reality, not always but most of the time). Truly no attempt to portray something matches what the imagination by itself can do.
@AsuraDandy
@AsuraDandy 9 лет назад
Antroid the way he played the werewolves was very clever, it really put on the anxiety factor, not stuff like jumpscares or a ferocious beast is chasing you" type of deal. When you deal with werewolves, its always the psychological aspect that is scary about them, they have the ability to turn into humans and disguise themselves, so you have no idea who's killing who and who is the werewolf, I really liked how he did it in this game, when he made it stalk them. It was very creepy, the visual effects helped alot too.

While I enjoyed this (especially the story's ending), I feel like Wil didn't give the players enough freedom. They had seemingly rare opportunities to make decisions, and other than "I live/I die", those decisions didn't seem to affect the story very much. Then again, maybe that's just a symptom of the short media format, and a longer game would have been a bit more freeform?
@migobrain
@migobrain 9 лет назад
IceMetalPunk I think it has mostly to do with the system, Dread is fairly simple but taking in acount that the only outcomes of the resolution system is "I success/ I die" story needs to be guided toward certain horror movies tropes
@CaitiffPrimogen
@CaitiffPrimogen 9 лет назад
IceMetalPunk Could also be a symptom of a one-shot following the tropes of Horror. Character agency isn't normally a feature of the genre. (I've not read/played Dread so I don;t know if it's advised, or just Wil's sGMing style)

That doesn't anwser why the beast attacked the hippie and not the guy when both were wearing it. Unless the guide was already turned before and it was just a regular animal attack at the camp, then there's a pretty big hole. The way he kinda described it though, it doesn't take long for the transformation into beast to take effect.

No, you're ASSUMING it was protective. There are red herrings in this, it's a mystery after all - there is no proof it was protective. You didn't ask or think about anything else that anyone was wearing, but by the host drawing your attention to if you think it's significant.

Sorry: this is going to be sporadic and all over the place. I almost skipped over watching "Dread" in the playlist after I learned it was a RPG just because I've seen so many before in the past and I'm really, really glad I didn't. The guests on the show needed their hands to be held at times because they weren't used to playing their character roles and Wil did an awesome job helping them along. Eventually they started getting into it and things started to flow smoothly. I can't believe the tower lasted as long as it did! And finally, I was surprised to find that I was shaking my leg in the middle of the video, a bad habit I picked up whenever I get nervous. Just goes to show how you can get drawn into the story/game. This may have been one of the best Table Top videos I've been binge watching the past two weeks because the stakes were so high! Not my favorite game, but definitely an awesome watch.
