Great video, thanks for sharing your own strategies to cut the backlog down. I’ve found a few things that have helped me: 1. Have three main brushes, the airbrush, a big brush and a small brush. The airbrush helps when weather sucks and you need to prime/zenithal/varnish some stuff. The big brush really helps with base coating if the airbrush isn’t applicable. The small brush is great for those finishing details. 2. Like you’ve mentioned, having two projects in parallel is beneficial. Especially if one is fairly quick and easy alongside one that is a bit more difficult or complex. Getting that satisfaction and sense of accomplishment is great. 3. Participate in a challenge. Whether it’s something with some painting buddies or maybe something like Goobertown Roulette helps give you something new and different to do. 4. Finally as you’ve mentioned as well sustained progress is much better than no progress. Even if it’s just one color on one part of one model, it’s still progress. Those little things all add up because a few days of that progress and all of a sudden you’ve got a tabletop standard model ready for finishing touches. Thanks again for the video and sharing your experiences. I’m glad I could give you an idea for a video.

I like the system suggested on another youtube mini painting channel - concentrate on a single army until you’ve got it ‘table-ready’. The painting doesn’t have to be perfect and you don’t need to complete all the different support options that you have in your pile: just figure out a core force plus some essential options and work on that until it’s done. Getting a painted force onto the table is a huge boost, and should give you the mojo you need to attack the next box in your pile.

This is something I struggle with from time to time, so it's really good to hear how you deal with it. I mentioned to you over on Instagram that I was struggling to get through the Chaos Knights from the SC box too, but now they're done I'm super happy with them and I'm fired up to do the Warriors. I definitely find having palette cleansers really helps me to be motivated to do more stuff and having it organised into projects makes everything so much less daunting. Moving from batch painting large batches to much smaller ones (I do my Chaos Warriors in pairs, Necron Warriors in fives) and I find that much more enjoyable and less stressful. I think it's easy to get overwhelmed having too many models in front of you at once.
@AgeofNagash
@AgeofNagash 3 года назад
Completely agreed! Like I said to you those knights were the biggest drain to my motivation. Now I am on the warriors I fell much better. Not batch painting all the time, pallet cleansers, and alternating between projects is what I have truly learned and how I would summaries my video.

Just got to the bit asking for what we've painted in the last year... Black Templars: Impulsor x1 Aggressors x3 Castellan x1 Stormcast Eternals: Sequitors x4 Castigators x2 Necrons: Technomancer with Canoptek Cloak x1 Warriors x20 Royal Warden x1 Plasmancer x1 Cryptothralls x2 Skorpekh Lord x1 Skorpek Destroyers x3 Overlord x1 Canoptek Reanimator x1 Slaves to Darkness: Chaos Knights x5 Chaos Lord on Karkadrak x1 Chaos Warriors x2 High Elf Spearman x1 Corpse Grinder Cult x8 Oddly, not as much as I'd painted the year before, but hey it's still a huge chunk of minis and 2020 was the weirdest of years.

@@AgeofNagash in an odd way, it was almost nice to see I wasn't the only one who was struggling with those Knights, especially when everything else I saw online was just them painted and without the hassle! xD I think those key points summarise it perfectly and are very much something I need to remember when I'm working through the backlog!

One of my ‘problems’ is that me and my gaming circle are all into ‘too many’ games. We play 40k, 30k, AoS, Adeptus Titanicus, Epic, Warmaster, Bolt Action, Kings of War, Black Seas, 6mm WW2, Napoleonics and ACW historicals....... the list goes on. We play mainly one system for 2 or 3 months, then jump to the next game. This leads to lots and lots of partially completed armies.
@AgeofNagash
@AgeofNagash 3 года назад
Yeah I can see that being a problem. Maybe try and cut your game systems down. Or stay on one for long enough to paint up your force.

Ohhh I had a mountain to get through but now it’s “better”... massive motivator for me was the channel or having a project/campaign to take part in. With that however moving onto contrast paints massively helped get through the pile. Also setting a reasonable standard of painting to work towards helps 😄

Wow, really need this one! Sadly i will miss the live stream but if you take questions that the community might discuss i have one : "Right now i have a great hobby streak, but it gets almost monotonous; you pump out armies but the hobby gets less fulfilling because you're either in a rut or getting things done just to get things done. How do you make it more of an experience?". Tabletop minions gave the advice to switch between terrain and models, but what if the hobby just gets a grind? looking forward to watching you vid on thursday! :)
@AgeofNagash
@AgeofNagash 3 года назад
Ah no worries man, glad you like the subject though :) Oh that is an interesting question to think about, as if you are on a non-stop hobby streak most people would be jealous lol. I think you have to ask yourself if it is a grind what is the reason why you are still smashing it out. In this video I talk about switching between projects.

@@AgeofNagash i think mainly that the isolation gives so much time to build and paint, but none to play or interact with (used to have painting evenings with friends, so that's gone too). so all you're left with is you own effectiveness, and I'm sad to say I'm more of an army painter than an artist so that's made it a bit too much of a grind to always get more things to build and paint and no motivation to stop.
@AgeofNagash
@AgeofNagash 3 года назад
@@nl3869 Yeah it has been hard losing that once you painted something being able to play with it on the table. And also of course not being able to hang out with your hobby friends. Hey! You are still an artist by being an army painter ;) Are saying you have no motivation to stop?

Take a break from painting the same thing or army. I paint 1 mini. A hero that I really like, even if It's not in the same army I'm painting ATM. Or the underworlds warbands are great too. Batch painting kinda sucks. It's faster but painting the same color on different minis gets tedious and boring. Try painting sections of a mini, not colors across different models. Also don't buy as many minis. It turns into work and not a hobby when you have a backlog. That last one is hard.

Thanks! These are good tips. I also recently abandoned batch painting for certain units. It actually makes me feel like I am hitting the important milestones faster. So, in a weird way, I feel like I am painting "faster" even though in reality I am probably painting "slower."

Glad it was helpful! And same for me too, dropping batch painting for most models has made me a more productive painter :)

Great video as always. I have a suggestion for future videos. Go back through each of your in-depth series and do an update video on the current state of the faction and add an FAQ for all the questions that had been posted in the comments.

Great video. I was just thinking about my own backlog and how to proceed. I'm currently powering my way through all 100 of my Vanari. Then I'll tackle a second StD start collecting box. Around the time that's done, my Warcaster Empyreans kickstarter pledge should arrive so I might be taking a break from AoS at that point. After that, maybe Alarith, maybe more StD, maybe I'll tackle my unfinished whfb Waaagh! Who knows?

Does it count as a pile of shame if we're talking clanrats? I swear I'm painting them as fast as I can but I made the stupid artistic decision to have them all in mismatched uniforms :p

I have one issue with your video... it is too long for my attention span. I have ADHD and have tried watching this several times and can't focus long enough to take it in, could you provide a brief synopsis? What I have managed to pay attention to seems like really useful advice, so otherwise great video man.
@AgeofNagash
@AgeofNagash 2 года назад
Sorry for the late reply! I didn't get a notification for your comment so I have only just seen it. That's understandable and I am glad you found the video useful :) A summary of this video is basically paint what you want in your backlog, not what you think you need to paint. For example let's say you are painting up a Daughters of Khaine army and are loosing motivation, but you have some Tzeentch also in your backlog and think they fun to paint right. Then paint them! Because that is where the fun is! And if you are having fun the motivation will be there and that is how you slowly but surely beat your backlog :)
